Chapter 8

Author: Open Sesame
On the third day Braxton was off on his business trip, Annalise began posting on social media. She uploaded pictures of herself in skimpy dresses on yachts, hiking photos with beautiful scenery, and clips of her eating at classy restaurants. Throughout everything she posted, one thing was constant—Braxton would always be in the corner of her pictures.

In her newest posted picture, she had looped her hand through his. Half of Braxton's face had been captured. They could've passed as newlyweds.

She captioned it, "Enjoying a paid holiday with my boss. Don't disturb me unless necessary."

Tamara's thumb hovered over the post, and she ended up liking it by accident.

Less than 3 seconds later, her phone buzzed. It was Braxton.

"The weather forecast says there'll be a storm tonight. Close the doors and the windows. Don't be afraid if it thunders," said Braxton. Tamara could hear the sound of waves through the phone.

Looking out, Tamara watched rain pelt the window. In the past, Braxton would've cut his business dinner short just to come home to her because she was scared of stormy nights. He would rub her feet to warm her up. In his arms, Tamara felt as though the world had gone silent. Now, she had to weather the storm on her own.

Braxton was still speaking, but Tamara couldn't hear what he was saying. Suddenly, she heard a woman's voice.

"Come here, Brax! Quick! The fireworks are about to begin. Gosh, is that my name? Is this your surprise? I love it!"

Tamara could imagine Annalise jumping happily on the beach. After some rustling noises, Braxton hung up after wishing her a good night.

Holding her phone, Tamara listened to the beeping tone interspersed with thunder. When a bolt of lightning illuminated the night sky, her tears fell like the rain outside. Her heart had numbed a long time ago, but her eyes provided an escape for any lingering melancholy.

The rain only ceased at dawn. Tamara opened the window and realized that the garden was a complete mess. The harsh winds had destroyed the roses she'd planted with Braxton when they first married. Petals were strewn over the grass.

A few years ago, she would've been heartbroken. However, considering her imminent departure, there was no point getting hung up over something she couldn't control.

Tamara unzipped her luggage and began packing. She destroyed and dumped everything that didn't fit. Carefully, she pried herself away from this house she'd shared with Braxton. However, there was just so much stuff…

Her phone buzzed with Braxton's texts.

After a dozen pictures of jewelry, he said, "I've been too harsh to you for the past few days. I'm sorry. Let's love each other better in the future. I picked out all these gifts for you myself. Do you like them? Why aren't you texting me back? I'm going to be home soon. Miss you."

Tamara didn't click into those pictures. Instead, she downloaded the surveillance footage from the office and the banquet. She wanted to prove to Braxton that she had never changed. He was the one who'd ruined their relationship.

The sun suddenly peered through the clouds, illuminating her room. Tamara took a last look at the bedroom she'd stayed in for three years.

When she left, she placed her ring and her phone on the living room table. Other than that, she left nothing behind.

Suddenly, she felt relieved that Braxton had schemed to divorce her three years ago. It saved her a lot of hassle.

Leaving the keys on the shelf, the door closed behind her for the last time. Tamara crossed her ruined garden, but felt no sadness.

Like the arrival of spring and the melting of snow, this was goodbye.

Two years later, Tamara was walking quickly with her phone to her ear. With her other hand, she flipped through the final draft of their tender that her secretary had just passed to her. "When are we going back to Sunrise Island?" Marshall asked. She could hear the smile in his voice and couldn't help but grin along. "In a few days, maybe. I've been so busy. Ever since our moms went to travel the world together and left their business to us, I've never slept through the night." Tamara eyed the postcards from Rosette on her table. "Are you complaining, Ms. Winslow? I remember you were voted to be the most influential young entrepreneur of the year just last month," teased Marshall, his voice laced with fondness. "Well, that's because you're not too far behind me." She closed the document. Their eyes met midair, and they hung up simultaneously. Both their teams stood opposite each other. Tamara challenged, "I'm not going to lose to you this time." Marshall smirked. "I won't h

  • You Said Goodbye Right After Hello   Chapter 24

Three years ago, Tamara had walked past the very same window in her wedding dress. Her heart had been filled with glee as she envisioned the happiness-filled life that was awaiting her. When she thought back on her marriage, it felt like a dream. In the dream, she loved pathetically, and it was agonisingly painful. When she woke up, she was left with nothing but a collection of shattered memories. As she watched Marshall chat with Rosette, she was floored by the jokes destiny had played on her. In the end, she smiled as though she'd made peace with herself. Since it was back to zero, she would reset the scales and give herself a new beginning. She would live only for herself this time. Without her realizing it, a week had passed in the Winslow residence. Due to their worries for the oyster farm, Tamara and Marshall decided to make a trip back to Sunrise Island to check up on the islanders. Within a few days, the rift between Rosette and Tamara had been repaired. After Charlie's

In the Winslow residence, Tamara sat on the couch watching the rain outside. Three years had passed since she married Braxton. She could count on one hand the number of times she had gone back home. Just now, she told her mother, Rosette Barlow, about her divorce and everything in between. "That monster!" Rosette got up immediately and walked over to her desk to grab her phone. "Immediately prepare the termination contacts! We'll be pulling out all our investments in Merrick Group! Now!" She went back to Tamara's side with tears in her eyes. "Tammy, I've let you down. After your dad passed, I was immersed in my own sadness. I paid you little attention. I gave my blessing for your marriage because I thought you liked him. I thought… I thought you'd be happy." Shaking her head, Tamara took Rosette's hands in hers and consoled her, "It's nothing to do with you. I was too naive. I thought love could conquer all." Rosette turned to Marshall and asked, "Is your mother alright?"

In the meeting room, Braxton listened to the company's quarterly report. He flipped through his documents absentmindedly, eyes drifting to his phone from time to time. Ever since Tamara left, he developed such a habit. It was as though he would receive a message from her in the next second. Yet, he was disappointed every time. "Next…" Perry's voice brought him back to reality. Suddenly, the door swung open. Everyone could hear the crisp clacking of heels. Braxton's head shot up. His eyes widened as he stared forward in disbelief. Tamara wore a custom white suit with her hair tied up. Her gaze was sharp. A group of officials stood behind her. One of them produced a warrant. "We received a report about the illegal deals your company is involved in. We will be investigating the truth of these claims. Please work with us." The meeting room erupted with whispers. Some were concerned about the company's future, while others exclaimed at Tamara's sudden appearance. They thought

Naturally, Braxton would not give up just like that. However, he chose to respect Tamara's wishes. In the end, he got on the boat to leave the island. Tamara thought that peace would return to their island. Yet, just as she was about to fall asleep, Edna thundered upstairs, her face pale. "I have bad news! The oyster farm was wrecked!" "What?" Tamara's face fell. She rushed to the window. From her room, she could see the oyster farm in the bay. White objects were floating on the surface of the water. They were the ripped nets and oyster shells. Tamara's heart sank into her stomach. The oyster farm was Sunrise Island's primary source of earnings. Everyone depended on the farm to earn a living. "Who did it?" Marshall immediately came back the second he heard the news. Edna trailed after him. She trembled as she reported, "The night watchers said they saw a speedboat stop by the beach. A few figures were sneaking around. There might've even been a woman…" The three of them w

Suddenly, fingers closed around Braxton's wrist and dragged him upward. While he floated in and out of consciousness, Braxton saw a blurry face. It wasn't Tamara. Instead, it was a stranger. With a splash, Braxton broke the surface. It was like he'd been reborn. When he woke up fully, Braxton realized that he was in an unfamiliar room. When he went downstairs, he saw Edna in the kitchen. She met his eyes. However, she just pointed coldly at the dishes on the table before turning to leave. Braxton called after her, but didn't ask her why she was there. "Have you seen Tamara? Where's she?" Taking off her apron, Edna said disdainfully, "Let Tamara go. She's doing well now, but she won't be if she sees you." Edna left, slamming the door behind her. "Tamara has to be here. I saw her!" Without even putting his shoes on, Braxton sprinted out and scoured the island for her. His feet bled because the grains of sand had cut into his flesh. However, Braxton didn't even notice. By
