Sam stared at him, her eyes blurry with tears. He’d never told her that before and now she felt like a horrid monster. She never meant to embarrass him or her mother. Would her mother be ashamed of her? Her humiliation increased tenfold realizing that everyone had probably been laughing at her the whole time and whispering about what a silly fool she had been. How could she think that someone like David would want to be with her?His face darkened as he continued, “I can’t do this anymore Samantha. May Eleanor forgive me, but I can’t! I have tried so hard but I just can’t do it anymore! Once back at home she paced her living room back and forth feeling sick. Her father had written out exactly what she was going to say tomorrow morning when they met with David and his lawyer. She didn’t think she could do it, it was lying and wrong. There was only one way out, she thought as she picked up her phone and turned it on. The phone started to ring almost immediately and she saw it was David. She smiled for a second weakly, thinking it must be a sign. If she could convince him then, there would no need to lie.“Sam, thank God, you finally answered,” David said sounding relieved when she answered the phone and her insides twist with guilt and shame. “Please let me come over so we can talk! Give me a chance. I know we can figure this all out,” he pleaded with her desperately. She bit down on her lip hard realizing that it was going to be so much harder than she imagine

Sam walked into her house and tossed the keys on the end table. She took off her heels and pushed them under the table. Despite her attempts to ‘go back to normal’ this past week Life was anything but normal. Tears welled up in her eyes and her heart ached. It was wrong, but Sam missed David and the way he made her feel. She missed Tabby. Everyone looked at her with disapproval, concern, or pity. Some like Stephanie accused her of being a traitorous brown-nosing bitch. Even Adam, the biggest goody two shoes had started snubbing any conversation with her. Sam wiped a tear from her cheek and sat down on the couch. If she had done the right thing why did it feel so wrong?  She let out a loud sigh to break the silence as she got up and dragged herself to the bathroom. Sam sat in the window seat staring at the sun sink slowly into the city skyline. A few snowflakes fell slowly to the street below. She always thought she’d hate big cities but since she moved to Indianapolis she found she loved it. It was exactly what she needed. A fresh start or close as she could get to one. David was never very far from her mind. She had thought about calling him several times. Sam even dialed his number a few times but quickly hung up. She was just too ashamed of herself. He probably had already moved on and didn’t want to hear from or see her. The restaurant looked nice, which didn’t surprise Sam any, Tabby always had good taste. They sat at the table the waiter led them to. Tabby and Robert chatted away, they seemed to get along very well, but Sam wasn’t listening. She was lost in her thoughts while she looked out the window of the restaurant, remembering that fateful weekend that had brought her and Tabby to the city for the first time.It seemed like a lifetime ago and she wasn’t the same person anymore. That carefree and happy Sam was gone and replaced by the worried and guilt-ridden Sam, who wasn’t sure if she could remember what being happy was like anymore. Her thoughts turned to David, she wondered as she had done so many times before. Where he was, what he was doing, who was he with? She felt her pulse quicken as she thought he could be possibly any one of the people that busily rushed past by the window.
