Chapter 20
Before the sun had the chance to rise and wake me with its bright welcome, I was already up and dressed. For once I was awake before Grayson, I had to sneak away from his warm embrace, his arms tightened around me as I wriggled, and I almost had to fight my own urges to stay. But, after last nights positive meeting I was filled with a new sense of hope and energy, and Amara was begging to be let out once again. I slipped on a jumper and a pair of running shoes before exiting out the front door quietly. I breathed in the fresh, natural air and let my feet carry me rather than overthink things like I usually do. I promised Amara she could have full control on the way back, but for now, I was desperate for a swim in the crystal blue lagoon I had come to love. My feet carried me there once again, as they had before, and I certainly wasn't complaining. The lagoon had become my private oasis, a secret spot for me to get away to. As I was about to strip off I stop

Chapter 21
Three weeks had passed since my family and Grayson had agreed to work together. Once a week my dad and Grayson would meet at the territory line and report back any suspicious activity or sightings. Since the Dark Moon pack and the Crescent pack were both on the lookout, there had been no sightings of Kirk or any other rogues/unfamiliar wolves for that matter, not even a whiff of a scent. The attacks on the packs, including Slades, had ceased. Rather than assault or murder our people, the attackers have been vandalising and leaving messages spray-painted into buildings. The messages were more or less the same each time, "We're coming for you mutts", "Tick-Tock, you're about to get shot", and so on. Despite all the petty criminal activity, we still were unable to catch the ones responsible, it was like they were ghosts. Grayson began to work from home more often, refusing to leave my side. Though there were no more deaths weighing on his already heavily burde

Chapter 22
"TIME TO GO BISH!". I turned to find Brynn standing on top of the breakfast table. She was wearing a neon green bikini and the largest pair of sunglasses I had ever seen. I burst out in laughter as she stuck a pose, her hands were on her hips and she was pulling a duckface while gyrating her lower body to a tune only she could hear. It was times like these that Brynn reminded me of Marnie. I had a feeling they would get along all too well, and I made a mental note to ask Beta Luke, Marnie's mate, to bring her along to the next border meeting. "Alright, just give me 10 more minutes to finish packing our picnic and checking that I have some sunscreen", I giggled breathlessly.Brynn had grown tired of being confined to the town or the cabin she and Grayson's mother lived in further north. Grayson had kept us all under lock and key while the attacks were happening, even more so after my confrontation with Kirk and his men.

Chapter 23
Fire.Desperation.Agony. These three words, these feelings and emotions, are all that I know right now. If someone were to ask me my name, I would have no clue. Instead, I would beg them to end my suffering... by any means necessary. I attempted to open my eyes. I could barely manage to hold them in a mere squint before they closed themselves. Water trickled out of the corners, it was as if they were attempting to cool down my body in any way they could. The cool tears soon turned scalding hot as they journeyed down my cheeks, torturously slow. My senses are completely numbed, I can't see, smell or even feel the ground beneath me. My breathing is laboured, coming out in short, heavy pants. I try to regain focus, to make sense of what was going on. Was I trapped in a dream?I feel myself beginning to blackout again, the pain was becoming too much to bear and I was almost relieved when sleep

Chapter 24
"Wakey, wakey".I could hear a muffled voice somewhere around me, but the burning sensation that had taken over my entire being was demanding my attention. "Hey! I said get up!".I could hear the voice clearer this time, it had grown in volume and had a harsher tone to it. As I attempted to open my stinging eyelids I grunted as what I can only assume was a boot made contact with my ribs. "That's a good girl, we didn't dose you up too hard this time. Didn't want you sleeping too long again and missing out on all the fun".That voice... It was a voice I knew, and it wasn't a pleasant one. I grumbled in response as I felt the force of the boot against my ribs once more. Ignoring the ache in my side and focusing on my breathing I attempted to lift my head. Immediately I was overwhelmed with a throbbing headache, and the heat that was still scorching my weak body reminded me it was still here. My senses began to slo

Chapter 25
The door to the room burst open, causing Kirk and the guard to jump up out of their seats. I watched as Laura looked toward the latest addition, her eyes filled with recognition and something else as she smiled at the stranger. I turned my head slightly to get a view of whoever had just entered the room. I was expecting to come face to face with the wolf responsible for my being here, why else would the men behind me jump up with respect, or was it fear?As my eyes roamed up the long legs of the man before me, I could feel my mouth fall open in pure shock as I looked into the eyes of someone I knew. Hope filled my heart as I thought I was being rescued, but that hope was soon crushed as it dawned on me, this wasn't my rescuer... He was my captor.   His piercing blue eyes were lacking their usual warmth, instead, they had been replaced by an icy chill. His familiar friendly smile was gone, in its place was a smug sneer as he

"Laila?"."She hasn't woken up at all?"."She stirred when I found her, but since then she's been sleeping like the dead"."Oh, real appropriate joke, idiot"."You know what I meant". I could hear the soft, muffled tones of voices around me, but I couldn't make out anything they were saying. I felt as if I were in a dream. Everything was black and I felt as if I were floating away. Gone was the pain, the fear, the feeling of an unknown future, would I die or would I live?I was at peace, and I let myself continue to float into the darkness.   **Two days later** The warm smell of apple pie enveloped my senses as I began to stir. Before I opened my still sleepy eyes, I took a moment to work out whether I was still dreaming or not. The events from the past few days flooded back into my mind. Memori

Chapter 27
As I walked down the stairs and towards my mother's familiar kitchen, I paused in the hallway. My fingers traced along the portraits that decorated the walls, pictures of my family surrounded me and brought a smile to my face.Pictures of my brothers, both young and as they are now, smiled back at me with their mischievous grins before I stopped in front of my parent's portrait. They glowed with love for one another as they smiled and melted into one another's embrace. Karter and his mate Jayne's portrait rested beside them, and I made a mental note to add mine and Graysons to the collection.Grayson was still in my room, deep in communication with I can only assume was Jaxon and a number of wolves from our pack. We were getting ready to leave soon, we needed to start the evacuation process.Oh...OH!I sprinted towards the kitchen and almost crashed into my dads back."HOW ARE WE ALL HERE RIGHT NOW?!", I asked exasperated. My f

Chapter 28
The next morning I awoke in Grayson's arms and prayed to Goddess I wasn't dreaming. I pinched him just to make sure, and when he groaned in response I jumped out of bed with relief. "What are you doing?", Grayson grumbled."Celebrating... Being... Here", I yelled in between breaths as I jumped up and down on the springy mattress."Maybe I should have let you stay at your parents", Grayson groaned as he began to sit up."Hey!" I protested as I launched myself at him. We began to wrestle, I was a skilled fighter but was nowhere near good enough to beat Grayson. I laughed and pleaded for mercy as he tickled me, his satisfied look told me he wasn't done with me yet. I wriggled around and tried to use the sheets to my advantage, but his grip was too strong and I ended up trapped underneath him.Graysons playful look soon turned dark as he took in my helpless appearance beneath him. Last night we rejoiced in one another's

Chapter 29
Three days had passed since we had arrived back home. I had barely seen Grayson as he was busy evacuating the town, welcoming warriors that had travelled to help us in the impending battle, and training those who were willing to fight. I myself had been busy teaching the women all that I knew, Blake even offered to help out... whenever he and Brynn could keep their hands off each other for more than 25 minutes. It was still strange for me to see them together, my big brother and my sister in law, but I was beyond happy for them.  "Hey sis, could I talk to you for a second?", Blake approached me as our training session for the afternoon was coming to a close. "Yeah sure", I smiled as he led me away from the group, "What's up?".I could see concern beginning to form on his face as he looked down at me, he shuffled on his feet uncomfortably as I stared into his eyes, silently demanding an answer.
