Chapter 50 - Nefarious plans
Marilyn was pleased with the progress she had made. Aiden needed to learn a valuable lesson. He had been given an opportunity, and he had snatched it away from her. Nobody has ever refused her! He had hurt her ego when he married Sydney. She'd always thought of him as hers. When they were dating, they had such a good time. He was well-to-do, attractive, and of equal standing. Her father, who had previously thought of her as a disappointment, was overjoyed when she told him Aiden was her boyfriend. Everything was going perfectly when her one mistake ruined everything. She thought back about the night when she had ended up with two guys, after a night of drunken debauchery. Those guys being Aiden's friends made things worse. It wasn't a big deal for Marilyn, she didn't realize Aiden would be so prude. Despite her pleadings, he broke up with her. Saying, he couldn't stand cheating. It was an oversight. She should have realized Aiden was too much of a man, he was jealous and possessive.

Chapter 51 - Jealousy
Sydney I've never been one to feel at ease at large social gatherings, but they were a crucial part of Aiden's social life. The mayor's banquet, on the other hand, was not something I wanted to attend. I slipped into my purple gown reluctantly and struggled with my hair to get it into an acceptable hairdo. Finally, I was fully costumed into an upper-crust socialite. Aiden kissed my naked shoulder and murmured, "You look wonderful." The gown had no straps. My skin was flushed pink, which matched the purple colour. "Thank you, you look very handsome, as well." I replied, "are you sure I look alright?" I inquired, my gaze fixed on our reflection in the mirror. From behind, his big frame hugged mine. He was dressed nicely in a tuxedo and looked good enough to eat. "You look wonderful, you would be the centre of attention, and I would be the most envied man at the party today." I snorted and tucked a stray curl into my hair. "You make me feel good. Perhaps I could hire a stylist to mak

Chapter 52 - Clearing misunderstandings
Sydney We returned in silence. Aiden inquired, sensing my gloomy mood. "Do you have anything on your mind?" "No, I'm a little fatigued," I admitted, not really honestly. "I know a few methods to brighten you up, like a wonderful massage followed by a bubble bath with champagne," he said thoughtfully as he reached across and sensuously squeezed my thigh. "It sounds wonderful," I said dryly, "but I'd rather just sleep." He raised an eyebrow," really? No one refuses a body massage from me. I am quite skilled in that area." He grinned. I recalled Marilyn's words and my mood turned fouler. " I am pretty sure, you would have had a lot of practice, but right now I would prefer if you stick to driving," I said sarcastically. "If I promise to stick to driving, would you let me practise my skills on you when we get home?" He teased. I cocked my head to look at him from the side, and he smiled. He had no idea that his flirting was backfiring. I lay back and closed my eyes mumbling. "Do w

Chapter 53 - The investigation
Aiden Nothing lasts forever. Hence, when life was going perfectly fine, something had to happen. Why is it that good times aren't permitted to last? I received the dreadful news early one morning and raced to the office. Pesticide residues were found in our soft drinks. "How awful is it?" I inquired of my security chief. "We don't know the extent of damage. We are still investigating. But I believe it's not an accident," said Dennis. I demanded, "Explain." "Our soft drinks were tainted, and I believe it was sabotage. A man bought our soft drinks from an Austin store last night, and soon afterwards, he complained of nausea and stomach problems. When he was brought to the emergency room, his wife phoned the police. Dieldrin, endosulfan, and heptathlon were found in his blood, all of which are hazardous to humans." "Is that man critical ?" I asked. "He is serious but not in a life-threatening condition," Dennis replied. "Are you sure it's because of our soft drink? " I asked, tryi

Chapter 54 - Mike's troubles
"You fucking bitch! Why the fuck did you do that for? I told you to keep a low profile at work." William Reiner was shouting at the blonde, scared girl. "I am sorry, it won't happen again. But I didnt reveal anything. I just had coffee with her." Emily said while hiccuping through tears. Emily was from a small town in Texas. When she arrived in San Francisco as a fresh graduate, the city dazzled her. Then she landed a job in the Reiner group in Human Resources. She was ecstatic. However, she was lonely and tried hard to fit in. She was flattered when William Reiner bumped into her in one of the clubs and gave her attention. He was sweet, charming and made her feel like a princess. He told her about his plight, how his mother and he were neglected and mistreated by his stepbrother Aiden Reiner. How his grandfather hated him. She trusted him, sympathized with him. They had been having an affair for last year. He had never been harsh towards her. He asked her a few weeks ago to set up

Chapter 55 - Intruder
Aiden It was a little late by the time we recalled all of the drinks. Two more food poisoning cases were admitted to the hospital the next day, shortly after the story broke. "What?" As my security officials briefed on the reports, I remarked. "Why don't these people read the newspaper or follow the news on television? We asked people to return any Reiner soft drinks they had bought in the previous two weeks." I was irritated. "They were either unaware of it or simply thoughtless. However, following the last two incidences, we haven't had any new cases of food poisoning. The four victims have gradually recovered as well, and they have agreed to an out-of-court settlement." My security chief stated. "That's a comfort," I said as I scratched my temples and turned to face my financial advisor, Michael. He didn't appear to be in a good mood. "Our stock prices have continued to fall, as expected. The good news is that it is beginning to slow down. It'll keep going at this pace for a w

Chapter 56 - The difference between a friend and a lover
Sydney "There is a park ahead. Would you like to walk with me? " Mike asked. I gave him a slight nod and took his arm as we strolled silently towards the park. We took a seat on a concrete bench. There was a tiny pond in the midst of the park, which was typical. As the ducks quacked around, a few children and toddlers fed them. A group of teens were roller skating, as joggers ran around the well-worn trail. Mike was the one who finally broke the stillness. "Would you like to talk?" He inquired. My gaze was drawn away from a young woman pushing a stroller. "Mike, please accept my apologies. I had no idea... I'm sorry... I didn't intend to..." For the Nth time, I apologised. Mike laughed, though his smile was tight, "I guess we'll have to fire Annie for not shutting the door when she was advised to." "It's not her fault. I met her downstairs and I asked her to unlock the door. She didn't know...she didn't see anything...." I fumbled, getting Annie fired would be the last straw.

Chapter 57 - Forshadow
Mike I'd never felt so relieved in my life, and it felt great to be able to share my secrets and thoughts with Sydney. Not all the secrets though. The fact that I had betrayed her made me feel humiliated and frustrated. That was something I couldn't tell her about... No, not yet. Maybe if I had the chance years later, I would apologise to her. Make amends if at all feasible. I doubt she'd be sitting here sipping coffee with me if she knew what I'd done to her. She'd despise me to death. I'd be free of this load one day. But for the time being, I was desperate, and Sydney was the only one who could help me. As she glanced through the menu, I stared at her wonderful face. We'd taken a seat in a cute little café near the park. I weighed the situation before asking "I need your help Sydney". She looked up at me. Her green eyes are slightly wide with curiosity. "I need to borrow some money from you........in cash. But I am not sure when I can pay you back, but I will surely pay you bac

Chapter 58 - Making up for the lost time
Sydney I arrived home fatigued, tired, and concerned. I dragged myself into the bedroom, stripped down to my underwear, and tossed them on the floor, unconcerned about where they landed. I poured a bubble into the large bathtub after turning on the water. The enticing aroma of bubbles drifted through the room. I stepped into the bathwater after putting my hair into and clipping it into a sloppy bun. I wanted to unwind, but Mike's confession, his secret, and his financial woes all flashed through my mind in rapid succession. I rested by closing my eyes and leaning back. I lay there for a long time, not knowing how long and not caring, because it was the first time all day that I felt relaxed. "Wow." I turned to face him when I heard his voice. "Hello," I replied quietly, smiling as I saw Aiden. "Wow." He said again, his hands in his pockets, leaning against the doorframe. At his wide eyes, I softly laughed. "You know, I've been in the tub before." I burst out laughing. "I know, bu

Chapter 59 - The game
Sydney Aiden had left early, and I was still basking in the warmth of the night before. Until Mike phoned to ask about the money. He appeared desperate, but he refused to say why he needed it. What had gone wrong? Perhaps I could have taken a more proactive approach and pressured him to reveal why he required so much money? What if he spent the money on something he shouldn't have? But he wasn't that kind of person. He wasn't even capable of harming a fly! I wasn't concerned about how long it would take him to return it. It didn't matter to me; all I cared about was making sure he was safe and out of trouble. After racking my brain for several hours, I realised that Aiden's Grandpa would be the only person who could lend me money. I had no idea how I was going to persuade him to grant me the loan and also keep it a secret from Aiden. I sighed despondently at my predicament. I dressed up and made my way over to the freaky zone. Senior Mr Reiner dubbed the east wing such. Mr Reiner s
