ELLEN The eerie silence was as resounding as a metal gong. We all sat there staring into each other's faces, with no words on our lips. I couldn't tell how long we had been this way, but it felt long enough. Even Sam who was always out to say one derogatory remark or the other, was unusually quiet. I watched Robb rise quietly to his feet, as he busied himself about around the room. I stood up quietly, and trudged after him. He seemed like the best person to relate to at that point. Cole was gone, although I didn't yet understand what that was supposed to mean. But, Big Joe was clearly a mess, and I could tell that he had done what had to be done. "You wanna help?" Robb buzzed, turning slightly towards me. I nodded, and increased my pace. "Of course, I want to. What are we doing?" "Well, Ellen if I'm to be frank, I don't know what we're doing here. I mean, I just needed a distraction, and cooking seemed like one." "You don't have to go through the str

JOE The ride back home was quiet, well except for the low hum of the engine. B.J hadn't said anything since we left the hospital, and I was beginning to feel a little worried. I wound the windows up, and turned on the radio, to dispel the silence that rocked the air. I wanted to get home as soon as I could. Truth be told, I had missed the comfort of my bed, and the quietness around the house. Since Ellen's arrival, I hadn't been able to enjoy any of those. It had been a problem after another. Maybe I should have let her walk away after the first time we met, and not given her a deal to play the role of my wife, although that hadn't worked either. Nothing seemed to work around her. My whole body ached for a long restful night, and maybe a cup of coffee. Either way, as long as I got to enjoy the silence tonight, it was going to be worth it. I turned the car into my street, and heaved a sigh, as I began to close in on my house. I was finally home with my son, a

ZACH Candles lit up the room, and flowers were all over the place. I couldn't tell if she found this romantic, but I didn't. This felt like a total shit show. I stood at the window for a minute, she wasn't in the room yet, probably taking her bath or shaving her legs. I exhaled, and began heading towards the door. It had been a long time since I had seen Maddy, and honestly I had missed her. Especially that flirtatious part of her, something Ellen greatly lacked. I waltzed into the room, like I owned the place, and gave it quick scans. The room had some heat in it. At least the candles had some good to it. "Maddy?" I called, settling myself on the edge of her bed. I heard quick footsteps coming from the bathroom, and soon she appeared at the in the room, holding a towel to her chest. "Zach?" She muttered briefly. I didn't know which I saw first, was it the terror or the shock that came after. But I knew she had been paralyzed for a second. "I

DEVAN THE ACCIDENT Silence! It had been a long time since I had experienced this quietness. It had only taken a minute for everything to return to how it had been before. Matt ignored me now, Robb was busy about his own business, and Dad was busy drinking himself to stupor, while awaiting Mum's arrival. I was back to the life I had lived a few months ago. The solitude, the silence, and that irrepressible feeling of guilt and hate, clogged in my throat. I sauntered around the house aimlessly, bumping into Matt repeatedly, although we didn't say a word to each other. Maybe I should have said something though, but I knew Matt, and I knew how he loved to do things his own way. We hadn't spoken to each other since the issue with the photographs that morning. I knew how pissed and irritated he felt, each time he set his eyes on me. Fortunately, it wasn't something new. I had received stares worse than that, ever since I found myself in this family, and of

DEVAN THE ACCIDENT Wesley Peters! It was a tiny gap between been alive and being dead, and I wondered if I was just in between the both of them, or I had crossed over already. My head banged, and my skin felt ashy to the touch, but that was the least of my concerns. What mattered most was getting to Matt, and stopping him from executing whatever he was planning on doing. The honk of a bus reawakened me to reality, and my eyes opened. I pulled my hood over my head, and got into the bus. Hopefully, Matt hadn't done some crazy stuff yet. Inasmuch as I wanted to think that he couldn't do anything silly, due to Dad's presence, but I had to say, Dad was drunk as skunk, and I doubted Dad could even handle the weight of his own load. I struggled to find a seat, and unfortunately the last seat left was beside a plus size woman, with a baby in her laps, and another clinging to her skirts. "What do you want, boy?" She snapped, barely glancing at my face. "I

ELLEN The world below me was quiet, and illuminated. Lights shone from every corner, lighting up the most part of the town. But here I was, stuck in this shit hole, with no electricity. I struggled to find my way around with a torch, but it only aided minimally. I walked away towards the bath room, hoping I could take a bath, and rest for the night. I wondered how long I was going to be here. This wasn't a kind of place I was supposed to be found in. I took off my clothes, the one after the other, until I was bare. I stepped into the bath tub, and turned on the faucet, half expecting the water to gush out, but surprisingly it didn't. I exhaled deeply, and gave myself a moment rest before rising out of the tub again. The idea of getting a room to sleep in at a motel, was proving itself to be shitty. This had to be the shittiest room I had ever stayed over. The ceilings gaped, as if in surprise at my presence in the room. Rats, crickets, and roaches ran free a

DEVAN I was quiet on the inside, just as much as I was on the outside. We were finally leaving the hospital after how long? Days, weeks, or months? I couldn't remember anymore. I had lost count in the process. Robb lifted the box I had brought along on the trip out of the room, grunting painfully as he stepped outside with it. Why had I come on the trip in the first place? I couldn't tell. I had sat, stared, and wondered why, all day long, but yet no matter how long I let my thoughts fly, it all came to nought. There was no excusable reason why I had decided to come in the first place. Robb walked into the room again, with beaming smiles. "What's going on?" I quizzed interestedly. "A few friends have come to see you. Is that alright with you?" Robb buzzed, as I nodded hurriedly in excitement. "Of course, Robb. Let them in." I said, as Robb pulled the door open. "Hi, Devan." Sam mumbled, walking in with Tommy close behind him. "Sam, Tommy..." I call

ELLEN Woes, and the warmth of failure that I felt. I had failed severally in the past, but I couldn't afford another one on my list this time around. The clouds were gloomy, and a heavy snowfall threatened. I strode through the bustling streets, with my coat around my shoulders, and a cigarette stick that I had gotten around a shop by the corner. It was time to finally do justice to what I had avoided for so long. I stopped in front of the hospital, and inhaled sharply. I was ready to see Devan now. I walked into it, with my head bent low, as I strode towards the reception. When was the last time that I was here, two weeks, three weeks? I couldn't remember. I stopped at the reception, and pulled my scarf off, as the nurse stood there clearly snubbed me. "Hello," I mumbled, but she flipped through pages hurriedly, as if she hadn't heard me speak. "Ma'am, I need to see someone." I said, but she maintained a deaf ear, as she chewed her gum noisily. I was be

DEVAN The clock ticked, and with every second I wondered how deep I had sunk. Change they say is inevitable, and somehow no matter how much I wanted to, it just didn't seem like I could get used to this one. The morning was bleak, and silent. And it seemed like we were all recovering from our wounds. I pulled myself to the edge of the bed, and placed my feet on the ground. A little coldness from the ground seeped into my feet. I was beginning to feel. That was a good start. I breathed deeply, with a little difficulty, and laid my back on the bed again. The doctor had been right. It wasn't going to take a long while before I walked again. I couldn't barely wait for the day I finally did that. "Devan," Robb called barging into my room. "Learn how to knock, Robb." I yelled. "I'm sorry. Do you want me to go out and come back in? Would that make you feel better?" "Respect my privacy." I warned, but he scoffed at me. "Privacy you say? Like you've got

ELLEN I clearly didn't look forward to the break of day. I knew what Suzy was going to do, but still, I wasn't ready to succumb to her demand. It had been a long night, and as far as I could remember, I had barely blinked an eye. Suzy had barely slept also, as I had felt her toss from side to side on the bed next to me. She wanted to get her life back, and I wanted mine also. And there was no possible way I was going to sacrifice living the very life I had fantasized about living, just because she needed my help. That wasn't fair to me. That morning, I had gone about my regular business just like the previous night, and from what I could tell, Suzy wasn't interested in me, just as I wasn't also. I mean, we were both so different, but yet, there was this kind of connection that I felt like we both shared unknowingly. I was bent over a bag, as I arranged a few stuff I had left into it. Big Joe hadn't even been kind enough to let me come back to the house to
