3rd povThe meeting place Marcellus had chosen was far enough from the palace and the forest that the noise of the competition didn't reach here. There was no distant crowd murmur, no servants moving through corridors, no sound of the competition's aftermath still rippling through the realm. Just silence and shadow and the smell of old stone in a building that looked abandoned from the outside and was anything but.Chelsea had been here three times now. And She still didn't like it.She stepped inside and found Elder Marcellus already waiting, standing beside a low table with his hands clasped behind his back, looking for all the world like a man who had nowhere else to be and was entirely comfortable about it.He turned when he heard her footsteps and smiled that particular smile of his — warm on the surface, completely empty underneath."Lady Chelsea," he said. "Right on time as always.""I try my lord," she said, and sat down because her legs were doing something unsteady that she

3rd PovMarcellus inclined his head. "And after the forest? Assuming Hector is dealt with — what then sir?"The Master laid it out in the way he always did — not quickly, not dramatically, simply clearly and in order, like someone reading from a list they had written a long time ago."Kill Hector in the forest if possible. If Hector survived against the odds, ensure Ivonne lost the competition regardless. Use the loss to push for her banishment. Strip away every ally she had. Leave her isolated and without resources and without the emotional support that had been keeping her functional through everything that had been thrown at her. And then, once she was alone and broken and frightened and without any of the people she was fighting for —"Then We begin," the Master said."Begin what, precisely?" Marcellus asked."Accessing what is inside her," the Master said. "We must do everything carefully. The spirit she carries is the most significant source of power this world has seen in centu

Ivonne's povKael's son suddenly raised his sword. But the daughter suddenly yelled in a furious way that filled the whole clearing."You stupid, ungrateful, narcissistic fool!" her voice was tight and clipped when she spoke, "You stabbed her," she said, and the words landed like individual blows. "You actually stabbed your own mother.""I-I didn't mean to stab her," the son said, and he had the audacity to sound almost defensive about it, like a man explaining away a minor accident. "I meant to only threaten you. Both of you. But she stepped in front of you a-and I didn't get time to think. It wasn't intentional but it's not my fault! why did she cover you in the first place?! I wasn't actually trying to kill you.""Because she's our mother," the daughter said, and her voice cracked on the last word before she pulled it back together by force. "Because she knows the evil in your heart and was protecting me. From you."Ivanna was standing with one hand pressed against her side, her f

Ivonne's pov My lungs burned with every breath I took. The forest around us had become a blur of towering trees, twisted roots, and endless shadows as Thorin and I ran as fast as our mortal bodies would allow.Branches whipped across my face, thorny vines caught at my clothes, and every step sent sharp pain shooting through the cuts and bruises that covered my body. Behind us, the guttural screeches of the Night Devourers echoed through the forest, growing louder every second."Keep running!" Thorin shouted over his shoulder, his voice carrying through the trees. Even exhausted, he was naturally much faster than I was.Every few seconds he slowed down just enough to make sure I was still behind him before pushing forward again. "Don't stop, Yvonne! Whatever you do, don't stop!""I'm trying!" I yelled back between ragged breaths. "I'm literally running as fast as I can!"He looked back again, his silver eyes full of concern. "A little faster if you can!""I would if my legs weren't tr

Ivonne''s povOne creature slammed into him from behind, another grabbed his arm, a third wrapped itself around his waist, and he went down fighting, roaring, his blade flashing as he cut through them with everything he had.One Night Devourer lost an arm. Another lost its head. But more kept coming, dragging him backward across the ground toward the trees, and the crowd behind me had dissolved into complete chaos, people screaming and pointing and the elders shouting over each other about rules and interference and the barrier, and I was already running before any of it had fully registered. The moment I crossed the distance between us, Hector cried out, and I immediately realised that it was a sound that had nothing to do with the creatures attacking him .I looked and saw that blood soaked through the bandages covering his chest, his wounds tearing open, pouring down his body with a speed that made my stomach turn over completely. The consequences of the vow I made was kicking in
