I had expected a visit, but not so soon, nor by the person on the other side of the door.“Uncle…” I was stopped as Raphe pushed his way into the apartment, shutting the door behind himself.“I’m not here to ask questions,” Raphe said abruptly, looking between Soloman and Tarrah.“I’m not sure what more we could tell you if you were going to ask questions,” I stated.“Good,” he replied. “I hope that means your alibi will standup to that statement because Anders isn’t going to let them just take you at your word.”I felt a bit uneasy that Raphe was the first to show up at my door. This was the first I’d seen him in several days. He’d been out of the palace. I hadn’t had a chance—or the nerve—to ask him about the photos of Anders and him when they were younger. I still didn’t know what their actual relationship was or if it had truly ended. I couldn’t see Raphe as the uncle I’d been getting to know these last weeks. I wasn’t sure I could trust him anymore. So, I’d keep playing it safe,

I paced Lucas’ office, ignoring Max’s intense gaze as he waited for me to tell him what to do. Well… more like give him permission. We hadn’t heard from Lucas or Hunter in nearly three days. They were supposed to check in once a day. That hadn’t happened. The last time we heard from them, Lucas had told us what they had found inside the warehouse. The next step in the plan was to eliminate the threat. It would be a risky endeavor for many reasons. So I wasn’t necessarily any more worried when we didn’t hear from him right after the attack but when another day passed, worry was all I could do.“Come on, Jaden,” Max urged. “We can’t wait any longer. We need to go find them.”“And potentially blow their cover if we do?” I replied.“Their cover must already be blown,” Max argued.“Or they had to lay low longer than they anticipated,” I retorted, throwing my hands up in the air before falling into a chair. “I don’t know what the hell to do. I can’t go looking for Lucas and Hunter. Someone

I choked on a disbelieving laugh. Surely I hadn’t heard him right. But his constant gaze told me I hadn’t. The pit in my stomach grew as I tried to make sense of it. Reject Sutton? I felt Rhonen stir in my mind at the thought.“You’re insane,” I spat. “That will never happen.”“Maybe,” Hank said. “But you are an Alpha, Mr. Danvers. You have a responsibility. A pack to think about. To protect.”Taking the cue, Hunter was met with several more blows to the abdomen.“Stop,” I bellowed. The brute froze, effected by my Alpha’s command. But it only lasted a few seconds, which he showed by landing one more punch to his face.“That’s enough, Jesse,” Hank said. “I think the Alpha gets the message.”Yeah, I got the idea. I had to figure out why. It was interesting that Hank said his “employers” wanted this. Not his Alpha. Not his pack leaders. Employers. Was he hiding his loyalties or was he really only loyal to the paycheck? The sedative had warn off now and some of my strength had returned. I

“Wha… what are you saying?” I choked out, pulling my hand away. Nova’s hackles raised.“Sutton, you shouldn’t have to live like this,” Nomi said. “I’ve sensed something for a while now. You talk about trust issues but something had to have made you doubt him. He’s been keeping things from you, hasn’t he?”“I don’t… I mean, it’s not…”“Sutton, you don’t have to explain,” she said. “And you shouldn’t have dealt with this alone all this time.”“I still don’t know what you’re trying to imply, Nomi,” I told her.“You think there’s someone else,” she stated.“What?” I exclaimed. “No, of… of course not. I mean, we’re marked. I would know if he was cheating.”Nomi’s expression changed, like I had said exactly what she wanted me to say. A pit formed in my stomach. I didn’t understand what was going on. My mind was reeling. Nova was pacing aggressively in my mind. Urging me to walk away.“Just because you haven’t felt him doesn’t mean he hasn’t been considering it,” Nomi pointed out.“He wouldn

“Oh my gosh. Sutton.”Tarrah came back to find me in the fetal position on the bedroom floor. My vision was blurry and the pain in my chest was intense. Tarrah kept calling my name, asking me what was wrong. Asking me what happened…“I… I rejected Lucas.”I had felt the pain in my heart not long after my call with Helene. I almost didn’t believe it. Nova didn’t want to believe it. But I knew what that feeling was. I had felt far too often for years with Mason. Then we felt it again and again.Nova howled in anguish and rage as I screamed in a ball on floor, praying for it to stop. When it did, I just wanted to think. I wanted to figure out why this was happening. How could Lucas do this? Then I thought about what Nomi had said. I remembered finding Lucas and Sera in the hall the night of ball. He had asked Sera to come to the capital. He’d come to see her. I’d already started to lose him even then. Then I abandoned him…“Sutton…” Tarrah pulled me up to look at her. “What are you talki
