Lucas left before sunrise the next morning. It had been harder than I expected to wake up without him. I’d gotten pretty attached to having him next to me. The worry that I’d done something wrong didn’t help. He had tried to push past yet another ruined moment and act like everything was okay, but knew it wasn’t.“Hello, earth to Sutton…” Tarah’s voice broke through my thoughts. “You’re going to make yourself bleed if you keep chewing your lip that hard. What’s up with you today, sweetie?”Tarrah had come back to the creek with me today. I wanted to get better at connecting with Nova and she had been such a big help the day before. Plus, Lucas had said I shouldn’t go anywhere outside the packhouse alone. But I wasn’t having much luck talking to Nova. I could feel her. That connection seemed to be getting stronger but she wasn’t speaking to me today. Not like she had been yesterday. It almost felt like she was avoiding me too. Like I suspected Lucas was as well.I sighed, falling back

“Alpha Lucas…” Soloman said cautiously. “This won’t solve anything. Put him down.”My grip tightened as he fought against me. Rhonen was egging me on but Sutton’s face popped into my head. No matter how I felt about her stepfather, Sutton still cared about him. She wouldn’t forgive any harm coming to him.So, I dropped him. He hit the floor with a thud as he coughed and spluttered.“Mate?” he gasped out. “Mason is Sut…“Mason was not her mate,” I bellowed, hovering over him. “He stole her. After you fucking sold her to Alpha Anders for some fucking business deal. You lost any right to know anything about her when you handed her over to those sadistic monsters.”Langston looked shocked and confused. Shaking his head as he crawled away from me.“You’re insane,” he argued. “That’s not what happened. I would never…”“Don’t fucking kid yourself, Langston,” I hissed. “How much did you even question his request? Come on, Langston. Dranfort isn’t that removed from lycan culture. Did you reall

Tarrah and the others shifted around Lucas and me. I took a moment to admire their beautiful wolves. Lucas brushed his hand down my cheek before taking a few steps back. He shifted into his gorgeous faded blonde wolf. Giving me a quick nuzzle, Rhonen backed away, tipping his head at the others to do the same. They retreated into the darkness within seconds, completely gone from sight. Leaving me along with Nova in the night air.I took a deep breath. Taking as much into my lungs as I could. Closing my eyes, I reached for Nova. She was there. Moving in the shadows of my mind.‘Take off your shoes,’ she instructed.I happily obliged, kicking them off to the side. My focus went to the sprouts of grass beneath my feet. The dirt cushioning my soles. I loved that feeling. I sensed Nova’s approval. She continued to move through the fog. I was starting to catch glimpses of her.I waited. Holding on to my connection with her. But nothing was happening. I didn’t feel anything. Nothing changed.

I pulled his shirt over his head and immediately pulled him back into a kiss. My body was in overdrive. All I wanted — all I could focus on — was him. His scent… His touch… His taste… Lucas yanked the buttons of my dress, removing it in a second.I groaned as his mouth moved to my breast, applying pressure with his teeth as his hands moved down my body. I felt a sharp tug, gasping as I barely registered the sound of fabric tearing as he ripped my panties from me. I whimpered as the heat from his body disappeared but was cut off when he pulled me to the edge of the table. The heat reappeared between my thighs. His tongue traveled along the length of my slit before delving between my folds. I gripped the edge of the table with a moan as he committed to his work. He swirled around the swollen nub before pulling it between his teeth, then returning his tongue. Picking up a fast rhythm that had my body on fire with pleasure. Pleasure that only increased as he pushed two fingers inside me.“

I kept my word to Sutton and spent the day in bed with her. But I did eventually have to drag myself away to check the preparations for tonight’s event. I’d already put a plan in place the day Sutton told me she wanted to announce our mateship and had linked Jaden this morning to get everything put into place. But there were a few details that were unusual for this tradition that were important to ensure. I wanted to make sure those measures were followed to a T. So I left Sutton to shower get ready while I met up with Jaden.“You’ve made sure everyone knows there will be no photography, right?” I asked Jaden as I walked through the small banquet hall. “We have a full security staff ready and waiting?”“Yes and yes,” Jaden said, following close by. “The only camera will be our local news station and the press meeting will only be broadcast live. After that, I’ll personally see the footage is deleted. All security will be sweeping every guest with a metal detector and all phones and ca
