Lindsay had gotten to the sheriff’s department early. When she arrived, she waved to the night shift deputies. As she walked to her office and put her bag down under the corner of her desk before she could sit down, Max walked in, set a cup of coffee on her desk, and dropped into the chair in front of it. Lindsay said, “Thanks for the coffee, Max. Is there something I can help you with?” “I don’t think so,” Max told her seriously. “I wasn’t attacked by a creature last night, so I’m good.” “How did our new deputies do last night?” she asked him as she sat down and logged into her computer. “They did fine. I am waiting for Little Bob to get here so we can talk about which shift everyone will be on.” “Good. I will let the two of you and Big Bob hash that out. Just let me know what the final schedule looks like, and remember that Annie and Victor are NEVER to work the same shift together. Oh, and we may want to try to keep Ellie and Annie from being on the same shifts as Andy at the

“Great, they made Pete mad,” Lindsay said when she saw what happened. “I am here if you need me, but remember, Pete doesn’t listen to me,” Wren told her, smiling. Lindsay walked out of her office, dodging back so she would not be hit by another book as it flew by her. She looked at the new deputies, who had been arguing and were now trying to hide from flying objects. “Pete!” Lindsay yelled out. “Stop it now! Put everything back, and I will make sure no one yells again.” Just like every other time it had happened, everything stopped where it was, even in mid-air. Lindsay stood just outside her doorway with her arms folded across her chest. She watched as things slowly began to move back into place. Lindsay did not move or say anything until things were back to where they had been. At that point, she turned and looked at the new deputies. “I know that the two of you were instructed to never yell inside this building. Would either of you care to explain why you were?” Lindsay asked

Lindsay heard the door chime and looked up to see Wren walking toward her office less than fifteen minutes after he had called. He came in, closed the door behind him, and dropped a folder on her desk in front of her. “He knew this whole time,” Wren said as he began to pace. Lindsay leaned forward, opened the folder, and started to read. She instantly knew what he meant. John had been approached to work in the compound before it was built. Lindsay left the folder open on her desk and leaned back in her chair. She looked at Wren, who was still pacing in her office. “What do you want to do about this?” she asked. “I don’t know. I just don’t know. John is, or was, my friend for so many years, that I never doubted what he was telling me. I had never had a reason to doubt anything until now,” Wren answered. “Come and sit down. We will figure out what we need to do,” Lindsay told him gently. “Aren’t you angry about this?” he asked as he sat across from her. “He could have told both of

Wren reached over and placed his hand on Lindsay’s back. She could barely feel his touch through her ballistic vest under her uniform shirt. She knew he was trying to make her feel better about what had happened over the past week. It was not working. Wren took a deep breath before he asked John, “Did Aaron White talk to you about any of this?” “Never,” John answered, shaking his head. “I rarely even saw him. Our times at the base did not overlap very long. He did ask me a few specific questions about individual creatures and holding facilities, which now I know why. When he did it, I thought he was simply asking questions about things he would be around and using.” Lindsay looked down at the floor, taking in every word John said. As she listened, she knew John had been used the same way she had been. “John, did Aaron ever ask you specific questions about Anubis or how he was contained?” Lindsay asked. Lindsay quickly saw John's expression change as he remembered his conversation

Andy led the way out of the sheriff's department and into the parking lot. Before they got in their patrol cars, he gave Annie the address and told her to follow him to the location. Her response was just a big smile and nodding of her head. He got into his car and pulled out of the parking lot, watching to ensure she followed his instructions. He was thankful that they were in separate cars. He was more able to talk to women than when Sheriff Gold took over, but he still did not like to do it. Annie's constant chatter drove him crazy. He would sometimes go on patrol just to get some peace and quiet.Throughout the drive to the area, he kept looking in his rearview mirror to make sure Annie was still behind him. He was running through all the possible scenarios of what could happen in his head as he drove. One was that the woman who called was hallucinating, and nothing was actually there. Another was much worse: the woman was right, and it would try to eat him and Annie the same way
