Cole POV I had debriefed Carson on the situation. He would also be punishing the two guards who had decided what the pack needed. The pack only was as strong as its leadership. Jessica POV How could I have expected things to be different. I was someone everybody ignored. I knew in my heart that Cole was not the father of that pup. Yet he would not believe me after I repeatedly told him the truth. I do not know how I know, but something smelled wrong. Cole has a distinct apple cinnamon scent. Jessica POV I heard Cole’s warning, but I could not resist reaching forward to touch the black tarry substance. It was like I was drawn to it through a magnetic force. Cole tried to step away but it was like he was stuck in that position. I glanced up at him and saw the pain in his face. I hated what I saw, and I wanted to erase it. I felt compelled to erase the pain resonating from him. As I touched the substance, I felt a zap and I was tossed across the field. It took me a moment to realize what had happened. I heard Cole yelling at me, panicked. I stood on shaky legs and moved back towards him, “I cannot move,” he told me, as he looked to me with panic flaring in his eyes. “I can do this,” I murmured as Cole tried to grab my arm, “Do not touch it again, Jessica! Cole POV I was pacing in the room waiting for the doctor to return. As if I had manifested him, he came racing through the door with a nurse on his heels. “What is wrong?” I demanded, seeing the frantic look on his face. “We know what it is,” he responded, as I waited impatiently for him to speak. “It is a rare, and uniquely developed, bug that transfers from one body to the next. How it transfers is hard to understand; however, in your case the bite exposed you to the bug,” the doctor stated, as he moved around Jessica’s bed unhooking medications flowing to her. “What are you doing? I do not want her in more pain than she already is,” I stated angrily. The doctor paused, as the nurse continued working, “She is suffering in complete silence,” the doctor stated to me. Jessica POV I drew a breath, as the doctor finally stated he had the bug in his clasp. I said nothing, as tears continued to flow down my cheeks. I had not said a word, but the tears would not stop flowing. The pain was incredible. It felt like a constant internal burn, that would simply not give me a reprieve. “Just a couple more minutes, Jessica,” the doctor murmured as he focused on his task. I did not reply, the statement did not require one. As I felt the instrument slide from my stomach, I let out a sigh of relief. There was a nurse waiting to put the bug inside a jar to seal it shut. The doctor stood, showing me the bug inside the jar. It was this hideous, tarry looking thing with fangs sticking out of its mouth. The blood surrounding the creature just added to the horror of it. To think that had been inside of me moments ago was disturbing. “Figure out what it is and deal with it,” I managed to say, before I felt my eyes start to close
