Maddy’s POV“Leave Pine Creek? What do you mean, honey?” Dad asked, brows raised. “I want to go back to New York,” I said, aware that I was dropping a bomb on him. Dad’s face tightened. “No, hell no, sweetie, you are not going back to New York!” His tone had suddenly taken a strange turn. It sounded, almost, as if he was afraid. “Why not?” I asked. Dad dropped the paper he was working on. Since his brush with Cutter, he had taken to staying home more. He was a bit thinner now, his face was sharper since he started taking care of himself. His payment arrangement with Cutter was working out slowly because so far, he had not gambled. Not to my knowledge anyway. He still went to his anonymous meetings, still kept away from the tables. I was genuinely proud of him.
