Maddy’s POVI didn’t wake up this morning thinking I’d have an official boyfriend. I never even imagined that boyfriend would be Max.But here we are.My muddy feelings aside, I was really thrilled. Maybe, I was finally free from Aston.“Wait a second, you said you came out here for something else, what is it?” Max’s voice interrupted our kiss.“Yeah, I guess I came to apologize to you…and also to talk about my dad. Last night, you said something about him being an addict. Do you think that’s true? Do you think he’s been lying to me?” I asked.Max’s hands around my waist caressed me reassuringly. “I’m sorry that I put that thought in your head. It wasn’t my place to do so.”“It’s actually your place now,” I said. He grinned happily, but the next second, he turned serious. “Look, Maddy, I grew up around addicts. Drug addicts, gamblers, sex addicts. This town might be beautiful, but the rest of us who actually grew up downtown were exposed to the fact that this town is a hub for all th

Maddy’s POV“Come, Maddy, let’s dance!!!” Giselle pulled me away from the wall where I had plastered, hiding while she partied with Ashley. The music was too loud. It banged against the wall, threatening to destroy my ear carnal.“You know, Giselle, when I told you about Ian and Aaron, I really didn’t expect you to go clubbing,” I yelled above the music so she would hear me.She gyrated her waist to the music. “We all deal with stress differently.”She had gone blank when I told her. She didn’t believe me. She called Ian’s cell so many times but he wouldn’t answer and when he did answer, he just sent a short message along with a picture of him kissing Aaron.“Sorry, Giselle, it’s true. I’m so sorry, I just didn’t know how to tell you.”The fucking bastard.A few hours later, we were at the club. Giselle was partying harder than normal so I guess she might be taking the news well. She downed cups of hot shots, making out with everyone she could find. I was the designated driver for the

Maddy’s POVDad returned late. Later than we had hoped. Julie tapped her feet nonstop, making me nervous too.As soon as dad turned the keys in the door, we both rushed to meet him in the foyer. He was exhausted. His head, still bandaged, was bleeding less now.He stared at us suspiciously. “Um, what’s going on here?”“We need to talk,” Julie and I echoed. I took the work briefcase away from him.“Okay, this is getting spooky. What’s going on?” Dad wanted to know.We pulled him into the living room and settled him down on the couch.“Okay, now you guys have to tell me what’s going on!”“We are need to talk about your gambling,” I said.He made a long sigh. “Julie did you put her up to this? This is my daughter for God’s sake. She shouldn’t be anywhere near this,” Dad snapped.Julie stood her ground. “She came to me. Do you understand that, Paul? She came to me because she is desperate to find help for you. Your daughter is desperate to help you.”“What is this, an intervention?”“Yes,

Maddy’s POV For Halloween, Pine Creek lit up. The streets were flooded with lights, delighted little kids out for trick-n-treat, and costumed adults. When I came out of the house, Giselle and the crew were already waiting for me. We screamed at each other, thrilled. We checked out each other’s costumes, complimenting ourselves. “Doesn’t Maddy look like a real Harley Quinn, wow?” Giselle said, spinning me around to check out my costume. “Oh my God, Giselle, you look like a perfect Wednesday! Ashley, that’s a gorgeous Poison Ivy. Cody? I don’t know what you are dressed like…” I spoke. Cody twirled around for me. “I’m Mandalorian. From Star Wars!” he groaned in frustration. “Ahh, sorry, I haven’t watched Star Wars.” Cody’s gasp could’ve reverberated throughout the world. Giselle rolled her eyes. “Please don’t get him started.” “Why am I the only one in this friend group who actually cares about the masterpiece that is Star Wars?” Cody asked. The girls started to

Maddy’s POVLala stood elegantly, moving through the room like she owned the space. She wore an expensive-looking gown. Her makeup was absolutely perfect. Not a single strand of hair was out of place on her head. “Hey, you are back, I’ve been waiting for you. Oh, don’t worry, your father’s a delightful company!” she said, turning to wave and grin at dad who returned her wave. “What the hell are you doing here?” I asked in a low voice so Dad wouldn’t hear. She tilted her head, looking me over with a bored cat-like expression. Compared to her, I still looked a mess in my Harley Quinn costume, ruffled hair, messed-up makeup. She knew how to make me feel horrible and unworthy compared to her. “I was hoping to talk to you,” she said and paused. “In private.” “About what?” came out of my mouth before I could stop myself. She glanced back at dad. “I don’t think he needs to hear this. That’s why I said in private,” she replied, sarcastically like she’s talking to an idiot. I buried my
