I paid the bill, stood up, and gave her our first official kiss in public. We went to the cinema to watch a movie, but she got so scared she cried and almost peed her pants. We left before it ended and went shopping instead. We got her a full wardrobe she’d outgrown a lot of her old outfits along with bags, shoes, and new human hair of different types. When we got back, we packed all her old clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry and donated them to a less privileged home. She went back to her hostel for a few days afterward. That was when I realized just how big my house was. For the first time since moving in, I checked the other two rooms. They were extremely dusty I’d totally forgotten I had three rooms, not one.I called a cleaning agency to deep clean the entire place, then replaced all the furniture. I had a plan.I didn’t like being separated from my girl. I loved having her around. Her being gone for just two nights made the whole place feel empty. Yes, I was no longer calling it

Ann: “Candid shots of us were posted. They’re saying we’re dating.”Me: “That’s a good thing.”Ann: “Yeah, now the whole school knows we’re an item. If you ever break my heart, you’ll be a scoundrel.”Me: “Yes, yes, yes I, Nathan, will be a scoundrel.”Ann: “All the girls are crying lemons. They’re saying a lot of them had crushes on you, but you never gave them face… and now you’re dating.”Me: “Oh, about that, Ann I had no idea. Is it going to be a problem?”Ann: “No, it’s not. I trust you.”The next day in class, Ann had an empty period, so she went to the girls’ hostel to return her room key to the matron.Matron: “Why are you leaving the hostel? Is there a problem with your room?”Ann: “None at all, ma.”Matron: “Okay, that’s fine. Where are you staying now?”Ann: (Smiling) “I live in the estate close to the school.”Matron: “Wow, you bought a house? Or are you living with family?”Ann: “I’m living with my boyfriend, actually.”Matron: “He must be a rich guy, then.”Ann: (Just sm

Me: “Get me the latest update on the sick mother’s medical report. Set a trap for the brother, make sure he borrows a large sum from a loan shark. Block the news from the blogger’s mother so she doesn’t go into shock.”PA: “Yes, sir. I’ll take care of it right away.”Me: “But Nancy isn’t even in town anymore. She’s schooling in F City. The last time I saw her was in junior secondary. Why would she do all this?”PA: (Smiling) “Sir, it’s obvious. It’s because she likes you.”Me: “Nancy likes me?”PA: “Yes, sir. From the story they concocted, it says you dumped your ex-girlfriend. Your ex definitely isn’t at your school, or she would’ve spoken up meaning Nancy is your alleged ex.”Me: “How come I never knew?”PA: “Apart from when you met Ann, you’ve always been a nonchalant person. You probably wouldn’t have cared even if she told you. I think she was waiting for you to take the initiative and ask her out.”Me: “But I don’t even like her. I’ve always seen her as my younger sister. How co

The next day, we went to school as usual. Lectures went smoothly; the scandal was completely out of our minds. We had tests and assignments due that same day, so we hit the library to finish up. After submitting the soft copies to our lecturer’s email, we headed to the canteen for lunch. In the school canteen, people kept passing by, smiling, and saying hello. My other buddies were on campus that day because of the tests and assignments. Coincidentally, they were seated just a table away.Mike: “Guys, look over there. Isn’t that Nath?”I was placing an order with Ann when I heard my name. I turned and saw them.Me: “Hey, bro.” I excused myself from Ann. “What’s up, guys? Been a minute. How have you been?”Pat: “We’re cool, man. Just got back to school yesterday.”Dave: “We heard there was a test, so we had to pull up.”Alex: “And some crazy-ass assignment.”Mike: “Man, I honestly can’t wait to get this school thing over with.”Me: “Not that I’m not tired too, but we have to pull throu

The roommate continued.Roommate: “I was so angry. I’m a woman too, and putting myself in her shoes… I wouldn’t be happy at all. I might even do something stupid. Since she confided in me and she’s my friend, I decided to help her get justice. So I took matters into my own hands and sent the story to a blogger I knew. She posted it, and I paid her. That’s how you started trending.”Ann: “Why didn’t you call me to verify? We were roommates for two years. If I hadn’t moved out, we’d still be sharing a room. We never had any major misunderstandings.”Roommate: “Ann, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight. I should have checked with you at least we weren’t fighting.”Ann: “But you didn’t! Do you have any idea how deep this cut? Do you know the emotional damage you caused? The impact on my relationship? Everywhere I went, people pointed fingers. They mocked me. Girls laughed at me. I felt like a clown. There was even a day I didn’t go to school because I couldn’t face them. And now you h
