I block Liana’s call again. “Leave me alone,” I mutter, stuffing my jersey back into my sports bag. It’s the third time she’s calling me today, maybe the 10th time this week, and I’ve had it up to here with all these people trying to check up on me like I’m some broken little wolf who needs their pity. “See you Friday, Parker?” One of the people I was practicing with comes over and shakes me. He must have told me his name like eight times, but I haven’t exactly been present enough to remember it. “Friday, sure,” I mutter. “A shame St. Claire didn’t show up. Something is wrong. I haven't seen any of my pack brothers anywhere since I arrived. I plucked through our bond, and everyone feels on edge, turbulent, the storm before an even worse storm. Another Beta gives chase, but I’m faster, and soon we’re in the middle of the pitch; me versus the entire Blood Fang pack. The crowd is in an uproar. Somewhere, a whistle blows incessantly, telling us to stop. To behave, or, at the very least, to get off the fucking field. None of us listen. Another Beta lunges over his packbrother, so that I don’t anticipate his attack. I leap out of bed and catch Olivia. She crumples in my arms with a small “oof” and then she stops moving. For a split, horrifying second, I think she’s dead. But then I feel her pulse beat beneath my fingertips, in-sync with mine, and I breathe a little easier. The ache in my shoulder is gone. The poison spreading around my body is no longer killing me. I don’t know what she’s done, or how she keeps doing it, but this time, I owe her my life. She’s weightless in my arms as I carry her, then drop her on one of the nurse’s beds. The ointment Marjorie and the other woman went looking for plops out from her shirt. “A distraction? Really?” I mutter, trying hard not to be amused by her. What sort of pride convinced Olivia Blackwood that she could save me better than the nurse could?And why did that pride work?
