“Quinn Willow’s daughter.” Theresa Darlington beams as we clack down her long corridor lined with famous art and statues popping from the bricks. But for all her expensive art, nothing seems to intrigue her as much as me. Talon and I follow after her like lost puppies, trying to keep pace with our owner. “Mother, slow down, please.” Talon gasps. I see him begin to cradle his stomach again and I worry. Theresa stops for a moment to cast her son a chastising look. “You wouldn’t stop if you knew the brilliance you’re in the room with, sweet boy.” My heart leaps as Talon looks at me briefly, saying quietly, “Trust me, mother. I think I have some idea.” I turn away and hide my blush, but Theresa doesn’t act like she heard him. She keeps pushing forward, and I’m amazed her thick hair doesn’t get tangled in her elegant walk. “Ryan!” she bellows, her voice echoing into a massive living room that we enter. The chandelier reflects the three of us overhead, and I become mesmerized by it.

I hate that I never know what to do without my packmates. As Ryker whirs away, speeding off into the sunset, I feel the panicked urge to follow him. What if he gets hurt? What if he has a run-in with Everest? What if, what if, what if… What if, for once, I took a fucking break? We make our way out of the room and up the stairs. Talon puts on a shirt he says he hasn’t worn since he was 17, and even though he’s lost a ton of weight over the years, it clings to every ridge of his lean body. His veined arms are the only things left exposed. I watch his hair sway as he walks in step with me. I have to pull my eyes away. How can he think he’s not my standard? I would give so much for him to touch me. “Lost in thought, Olivia?” His father’s baritone pierces through my head. I stand pin-straight and smile away my thoughts about his son, “Just thinking about my mother.” His face becomes shadowed, a mix of nostalgia and sadness, “Quinn. She was… wonderful.” My heart thrums, and I lean in to hear more about this woman who has taken over my whole life. This place makes the CrestRidge library look like child’s pla
