All Chapters of His Secret Second: Chapter 31 - Chapter 40

(Danny POV)We were going to miss our flight if we did not leave soon.My parents were freaking out, not understanding what the delay was. I eventually told them to go on ahead of me, explaining that there was a minor issue involving the alpha king that I needed to deal with. That got them off my back, but I still needed to make the flight myself.Of course, that was easier said than done. The courier took his d&mn time making his way to and through the packhouse. Kade and I waited with Jenna and Ashley. We were terrified about what the letter would say, and I was simultaneously terrified that I was going to miss the flight. I kept nervously checking the time on my phone every 30 seconds. Finally, the courier made it.I watched as Jenna silently read the letter and then handed it to me. Kade and I exchanged looks before reading it ourselves.“This was always about her case,” I linked Kade in relief. “That’s it. We overreacted.”“Did we?” he linked back. He didn’t seem as sure

(Jenna POV)“Mother.”I hadn’t said the word out loud in eight years. At least not to address someone. Saying it now felt strange. She stood on the small porch of my cottage, wearing a neat blue dress and a tight smile, holding a cardboard box like it was either a peace offering or a weapon. Her blond hair, now showing hints of gray, was pulled into its usual severe bun, not a strand out of place—as if control itself were a fashion choice. For a moment, neither of us spoke.“I heard you were back,” she said finally. “Brenna mentioned it. I didn’t believe her at first.”Brenna. Of course. I should have known that my high school bully would be friends with my mother.“I’m back,” I replied flatly.“Yes,” she said, eyes sweeping over me from head to toe. “I can see that.”There was judgment in that look. There always had been. She took a step forward, clearly intending to come inside. I didn’t move.“Are you going to let me in?” she asked.“No.”She rolled her eyes. Then, ignoring my

(Jenna POV)Ashley didn’t say a word when she walked in.Not at first. She almost didn’t need to.The moment that my mother realized that we weren’t alone, she froze. It was strangely satisfying to watch.Ashley was standing just inside the living room, her hands resting casually on the back of a chair. There was no aggression in her posture, no sharpness in her energy. And yet, power radiated from her—quiet, unyielding, unmistakable.“Luna Rivers,” my mother said politely, smoothing her expression. “I didn’t realize—”“What?” Ashley asked calmly… almost innocently. “You didn’t realize what?”My mother straightened her spine.“Luna, I’m not sure how much you heard…..”“I heard most of it,” Ashley replied casually. “Or at least enough. I pulled up just as you were going inside.”My mother visibly relaxed, mistaking Ashley’s restraint for sympathy.“Then you can appreciate why I’m upset about Jenna’s recent behavior,” she said confidently. “I know you and Alpha Rivers would never con

(Jenna POV)We were much more responsible with the werewolf wine than we were with the werewolf hard alcohol. We each had two, almost three glasses, but that’s it.Of course, that was enough to get us on the drunk side of tipsy. But, like Ashley said, it also helped me to get out of my own head. Which allowed us to really talk.We could not talk about the alpha order —I was physically unable to refer to it even indirectly— but we could talk about everything else.Despite what got us to that conversation (namely, my mother, the box, and the diary), it felt nice to get an outside perspective on the Danny-Beth situation. Willow was the only other ear I had to talk to, and although I loved my wolf, she operated primarily on instinct and a desire to protect her human, and her experiences were largely limited to the ones I myself had lived. In contrast, Ashley had lived a whole life outside the Blue River Mountain Pack. She also had human understanding, and an inside perspective on Dan

(Jenna POV)My life was officially a mess. And I now had a short but growing list of things that I needed to do to put it back together:1. Figure out things with Danny.2. Find Beth a good doctor. (I was ashamed that I hadn’t worked on this yet.)3. Deal with the alpha king.4. Get Kade to release me from the alpha order.5. Deal with my mother, before she did something else to destroy my life. (Because despite Ashley’s threats, I knew that she would try.)6. Figure out who was feeding my mother information about me. (I knew it wasn’t just Brenna.)7. Save my job, my clients, and my career. Each item on the list contained a landmine of complications, and I wasn’t sure how to start dealing with any of them.Thankfully, the case that had an upcoming in-person hearing settled at the last minute, so that pressure was off my chest. But everything else in my life was a nightmare. After trying and failing to get any real work done …and not knowing what else to do …and knowing bette
