chapter 1: Carol

CHAPTER 1CAROLDirty old pig, firing me just because I refused to sleep with him. What do men think of themselves nowadays? That they can just come along and dispose of us however they want, simply because they know we need a job?Well, it’s not like it was the best job anyway; being a waitress in a bar wasn’t exactly a big deal. I graduated in Real Estate, and yet, how did I end up as a waitress? Just great.I kept walking down the street through St. James’s Park, letting my thoughts distract me from all the problems I had to face now. I made a quick stop at a coffee shop to buy a cappuccino and some donuts. I’d eat them at home while I figured out what to do.As I was leaving the place, my phone started ringing. I pulled it out of my bag and looked at the screen: great, I wanted her to drop the subject already; it wasn’t right. Seeing her name, I answered.“Hi, Susan,” I said, resuming my walk.“Am I interrupting something?”“No, don’t worry, it hasn’t been a good day.”“What happe

chapter 2: Carol

CHAPTER 2CAROL“Yes, I’m fine.”I squirm in his arms; he sighs and, reluctantly, lets me go. I turn my head and look longingly at my spilled coffee on the ground.“I’m sorry,” I blink a few times and look at him.“Excuse me?”“I’m sorry for knocking over your coffee,” he says, nodding toward where it lies.“It’s nothing, Mr. Ashford. I…” I’m interrupted.“Why do you insist on calling me ‘sir’? How long have you been my daughter’s friend?”“Six or seven years, Mr… I mean, William. I can hardly even remember anymore.”“Will. Call me Will.”“Alright. Well, I should go now; Susan must be waiting for me.” The double meaning in his words didn’t go unnoticed by me. Or is it just me hearing what I’d like to hear?“Are you going home?” There was something strange in his tone when he asked that question; I’d even say he sounded nervous.“No. She’s coming to mine.”“Oh, in that case, let’s get you a new coffee and then Carlos can drive you.”“I… There’s no need, really.”“Come on, Carol. I don’

Chapter 3: Carol

CHAPTER 3CAROLAfter arriving at my small apartment, which was more like an art studio, I changed into something more comfortable. It didn’t take long before Susan arrived.“Mmm! These are delicious.”“Yeah, you’re right. I needed something sweet to sweeten my day. By the way, I ran into your father today.”Susan stopped chewing; her perfectly plucked eyebrows rose in surprise.“Long story. It was pure chance…” I waved my hand to brush it off. “He asked me to tell you to call him.”She watched me for a moment longer before continuing to eat her chocolate donut.“I swear I’m going to end up gaining weight if I keep this up.” I laughed. The girl had an incredible body and never gained a pound.“Sure!”Susan was beautiful: a natural blonde with a killer body and beautiful blue eyes, just like her mother’s. Or so I had seen in the photographs she had shown me, though she looked more like her father.“So, what happened?” Susan watched me from the other end of the sofa as she popped anothe

Chapter 4: Carol

CHAPTER 4CAROLSusan walks toward the kitchen, finds her purse on the counter, and pulls out her cell phone.“Wait! What are you doing?”“Just a second,” she gestures with her hand before leaving the living room and heading toward the front door on the lower level of the house. I hear the door open, but it never closes. She has always been a good friend, sister, and companion; constantly trying to fix everything. I leave her to it while I start clearing the mess in the living room. Thinking that I’d soon have to leave my place made me feel nostalgic. It was a simple, cozy apartment; it only had one bedroom, a private bathroom, a living room, and an integrated kitchen. And a small studio downstairs, next to the front door. I would truly miss this place.Once everything is organized, I leave the glasses and plates in the sink and start washing them.“Done!”I jump in fright; I didn’t hear her come in.“What is it?” I ask cautiously, seeing that wolfish grin on her beautiful face.“You’

Chapter 5: Carol

CHAPTER 5CAROL“Damn, what a horrible, annoying noise,” I stretch out my hand and switch off my hateful alarm clock. “I swear I’m going to buy a better one,” I mutter.Who on earth likes waking up at six in the morning? Not me. I hate getting up early. I drag my heavy body to the edge of the bed and stand up. Today would be my first day at my new job as the secretary for the owner of the company; even though it was Thursday, it was fine—any day is a good day to start a new job.The first thing I do is head to the kitchen to make my coffee. I turn on the coffee maker, add the beans, and let it brew while I go to the bathroom: I brush my teeth, adjust the shower temperature, put my hair in a high bun, take off my clothes, and step in.The sound of the machine tells me the coffee is ready, so I step out. I wrap my body in a towel and go for my daily dose of caffeine; I know I’ll need it today more than ever.I check my closet looking for something to wear; I settle on a black and white

Chapter 6: CAROL

CHAPTER 6CAROLWill parks the car in front of the building; I open the door, hurried to escape that space, which felt far too small for the two of us. In my mind, I only wished I could climb onto his lap and wipe away that frown I had put there.“Wait,” his hand catches mine just as my foot touches the sidewalk. An electric current explodes where our hands meet, racing up my arm and down my spine. We both look at our hands, and by the look in his eyes, I know he felt it too. I don’t move. “Forgive me for raising my voice; it wasn’t my intention.”God, I was the one at fault for everything, and yet he’s the one apologizing.“There’s nothing to forgive, Will. It was my fault. So, I’m the one who should apologize. I’m very sorry.”Without another word, I step out of the car, trembling all over. I had never been into older men—not before Will. He came along to make me take back that fact.I walk up the entrance steps and greet the security guards; one of them approaches me immediately.“

Chapter 7: Carol

CHAPTER 7CAROLI practically run out of his office. I get up to date with everything related to the real estate firm. I sent him my number and my email. As his secretary, I could see how busy he was: houses, apartments, restaurants, and hotels being sold. Answering emails for people who wanted to sell their properties was quite entertaining; also the contracts with investors, which was the part I liked most because I knew I was helping him.I noticed that Will was planning to buy a hotel with an included restaurant; he had a long list of suggestions to review and select from. He had an appointment at two with Mr. Cardoval at his hotel on the outskirts of London, in Brighton. That would take him all day. The idea of not seeing him until the next day discouraged me.I was so concentrated that I didn’t realice the time until Marta stopped at my desk.“Hi… I was wondering if you’d like to go to lunch.”I blink a few times to refresh my brain. It’s eleven-forty-five.“Sure! I didn’t reali

Chapter 8: Carol

CHAPTER 8CAROLMy workday was nearly over when my phone vibrated in my desk drawer, signaling a text. I pulled it out. My brow furrowed when I saw it was an unknown number. I tapped the screen to open the message.—Still at the office?Butterflies began to flutter wildly in my stomach. It had to be Will; no one else has my number except for Susan and my parents. I checked the time in the corner of the screen: five-thirty.—Yes. But I’m almost ready to leave. Do you need something? C.I signed off with my initial.—Yes. Save my number. W.The man loved giving orders. But this part had nothing to do with work. I ignored his request and left the phone on the desk. I gathered my things, grabbed my purse, and stood up."Ready to go?" I turned to see Marta."Yes. You?""Let's go then. I’m dying to get home, I’ve got things to do.""Right." I grabbed my phone just as it vibrated in my hand again. I read the message. “Why are you leaving me on read! That’s rude. W.”I stopped dead

Chapter 9: Will

CHAPTER 9 WILL What the hell was I thinking when I stole Susan’s keys to Carol’s apartment? Showing up at her place like some kind of animal... I think I let myself get carried away by that conversation I overheard Susan having. Seeing her with another man last night—someone who wasn’t me—was an image that clouded my every sense. Then, she didn't answer my texts, confirming that what I’d heard was true. Dammit, I didn't understand why I was acting this way. Carol wasn't for me; she’s barely a girl... Though seeing her like that, so sensual and sexy in those pink panties and that short t-shirt—hell, I was hard as a rock in seconds. Not losing control and taking her right there on the kitchen island was the hardest challenge I’ve ever faced. Now, what I couldn't wrap my head around was why Carol was alone instead of having company; I’d find the answers to that soon enough. That little girl—though she was anything but little—was undoing me. I couldn’t get her scent out of my mind,

Chapter 10: Will

CHAPTER 10WILL"Wow. Are you planning to close the restaurant too?" As we talked, the man accompanied me to the entrance of what was now my building."No, I plan to keep that. Well, I must be going. My daughter is waiting for me at home.""Of course. See you around."I head to my car and climb in. I glance at the dashboard clock: quarter to five. I’d make it back by nightfall, and I still had to call Matt to let him know everything was ready and talk about the new plans... While driving, I let my mind drift back to a memory of when I first met her: Carol had just walked through the front door of the apartment, showing off those gorgeous long legs; God, they seemed infinite. Tan skin, wrapped in tiny denim shorts. My eyes kept traveling up to her flat stomach, where only a small sliver of skin was visible. She wore a black long-sleeved shirt and her brown hair was loose. Her face, without a drop of makeup, was truly beautiful. I swear I tried with everything I had to look away. But sh
