LOGINCHAPTER 2
CAROL “Yes, I’m fine.” I squirm in his arms; he sighs and, reluctantly, lets me go. I turn my head and look longingly at my spilled coffee on the ground. “I’m sorry,” I blink a few times and look at him. “Excuse me?” “I’m sorry for knocking over your coffee,” he says, nodding toward where it lies. “It’s nothing, Mr. Ashford. I…” I’m interrupted. “Why do you insist on calling me ‘sir’? How long have you been my daughter’s friend?” “Six or seven years, Mr… I mean, William. I can hardly even remember anymore.” “Will. Call me Will.” “Alright. Well, I should go now; Susan must be waiting for me.” The double meaning in his words didn’t go unnoticed by me. Or is it just me hearing what I’d like to hear? “Are you going home?” There was something strange in his tone when he asked that question; I’d even say he sounded nervous. “No. She’s coming to mine.” “Oh, in that case, let’s get you a new coffee and then Carlos can drive you.” “I… There’s no need, really.” “Come on, Carol. I don’t like having to repeat myself.” He was so close to me that I could feel his fresh, minty breath on my face. And his scent… Oh God, it’s undoing me. His eyes watched me expectantly, as if he wanted me to challenge him. I take a deep breath and nod. “I’ll accept the ride. But not the coffee—that wasn’t your fault. Besides, it’s already late.” “Fine.” He turns on his heels, taking the pink box I was carrying. “Are these for Susan?” “Oh, no. Those were just for me before she called.” “Isn’t that a lot for just you?” “When you’ve had a bad day and you see that your life is crap, nothing is too much.” “Watch that mouth,” I stop dead in my tracks behind him as I watch him walk. Did he just scold me? “In any case, that won’t solve the problem.” I walk fast and catch up to him, stepping alongside him. “No, I guess not. But I’m craving something sweet and delicious.” I say the latter with a double meaning. Will notices because he glances at me sideways. I feel the blood rush up my neck and pool in my cheeks; I lower my head to hide the redness of my face, hoping he didn’t see it. We walk one more block before stopping in front of the large building ahead of us, where it reads in black letters with silver borders: W&S REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS – ASHFORD’S Right above the main entrance. I see him take out his phone and put it to his ear while he steps away to talk. Shortly after, he turns and looks at me. The butterflies in my stomach, triggered by the heated look Will gives me as he scans my body, tell me to run—that my desire for him isn’t right. I shift somewhat restlessly. “Carlos is coming with the car now. Tell Susan to call me as soon as she can.” I nod my head. “Is something wrong?” I look at him, dazed. Damn, he must think I’m a freak. “No… well, yes.” “Yes or no? You have to make up your mind.” I roll my eyes to focus them back on Will. “The truth is, I just got fired. That’s why I’m wandering idly through the streets at two in the afternoon.” He watches me closely and strokes his chin with a thoughtful air. “I see.” He opens his mouth to say something else, but a car horn interrupts us, making us both turn in time to see Carlos step out of the car and walk around the front. He opens the back door and waits for me to get in. “Well, I guess it’s time for me to go.” I look him up and down, all six-foot-three of him. The intense gaze he gives me makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. We walk to the car; just as I’m about to get in, Will takes my hand, making my entire back tense up. If only he knew what his touch does to me. “Everything will work out.” “I guess so.” As I get into the car, he hands me the box and closes the door. With a nod from him, I watch as Carlos heads to the front and gets in. Through the car window, I watch Will, who stands on the sidewalk with his hands in his pockets, his gaze fixed on me as we pull away. For a nanosecond, our eyes lock, and I swear what I saw in those tired, gray eyes was desire. With a heavy breath, I lean back in the seat for the whole ride home, letting my thoughts get lost in how strange our encounter had been. What was he doing walking at that hour in the opposite direction of his office? But then again, what did I know about him and his daily routine?CHAPTER 13CAROLSaturday went by incredibly fast between Susan’s move—which, by the way, caught Will by surprise; the man left in a fury, claiming he had things to do in Brighton, and we hadn’t seen him since—and finishing unpacking my own belongings to settle into the guest room.Afterward, I tidied up the living room, which was cluttered with boxes everywhere; I stacked them inside one another and stuffed them into black trash bags. I hauled them out of the apartment to the utility room... it took three trips to get it all out. By the time I finished, I was exhausted and drenched in sweat. I caught a whiff of my t-shirt."I need a shower, urgently," I said out loud to myself. The small bathroom in my room didn't have a tub, and I remembered Susan mentioning there was one in the house. I went to the main bathroom across the hall, only to discover that it didn't have one either. It wasn't the first time I’d been in there, but I’d held onto the hope of finding one. When I opened
CHAPTER 12CAROLThe fire inside me was spreading rapidly, scorching everything in its path. My body responded to him automatically, as if we were magnets drawn together by an invisible force field. I was so turned on I could feel the moisture between my legs soaking my panties. The friction of his member against me had me losing my mind; all I could feel was the iron grip of his hands on my waist. My pelvis throbbed again. Relax, inhale, exhale... I repeated it over and over like a mantra. My reaction to him was stupid, but... dammit, I never actually imagined this could happen, and hell, it was happening.I pulled Will by his hair, dragging him closer. I bit his lower bottom lip and tugged it between mine, applying a bit of pressure; I know it hurt because I saw it in his eyes, in the way his brow furrowed, but he didn't say a word. For the first time, our tongues enjoyed the journey they were taking. I could feel all his heat; it was delicious. Will trailed his lips down my ne
CHAPTER 11WILLThe first thing I heard when the elevator came to a halt on the top floor of my building were the girls' voices, a bit loud and punctuated by soft giggles.I push open the front door and take in the scene, captivated; the two of them, like a pair of schoolgirls, are sprawled on the sofa with glasses full of red wine. They’re wearing tiny pajama shorts and camisoles. They don’t even flinch at my arrival until I kick the door shut."Dad, you’re home!" Susan throws her arms up in a silent invitation for me to come closer. It was obvious from her voice that she’d already had quite enough wine for one night.I walk straight toward them to say hello."Have you eaten yet?" I lean down and kiss Susan on the forehead. I notice Carol shifting uncomfortably; I turn and, without overthinking it, I kiss her forehead too. Her soft skin against my lips sends a tickle through me. I notice her catch her breath, so I pull away and act as if I hadn't noticed."I have, but Carol ha
CHAPTER 10WILL"Wow. Are you planning to close the restaurant too?" As we talked, the man accompanied me to the entrance of what was now my building."No, I plan to keep that. Well, I must be going. My daughter is waiting for me at home.""Of course. See you around."I head to my car and climb in. I glance at the dashboard clock: quarter to five. I’d make it back by nightfall, and I still had to call Matt to let him know everything was ready and talk about the new plans... While driving, I let my mind drift back to a memory of when I first met her: Carol had just walked through the front door of the apartment, showing off those gorgeous long legs; God, they seemed infinite. Tan skin, wrapped in tiny denim shorts. My eyes kept traveling up to her flat stomach, where only a small sliver of skin was visible. She wore a black long-sleeved shirt and her brown hair was loose. Her face, without a drop of makeup, was truly beautiful. I swear I tried with everything I had to look away. But sh
CHAPTER 9WILLWhat the hell was I thinking when I stole Susan’s keys to Carol’s apartment? Showing up at her place like some kind of animal... I think I let myself get carried away by that conversation I overheard Susan having. Seeing her with another man last night—someone who wasn’t me—was an image that clouded my every sense. Then, she didn't answer my texts, confirming that what I’d heard was true.Dammit, I didn't understand why I was acting this way. Carol wasn't for me; she’s barely a girl... Though seeing her like that, so sensual and sexy in those pink panties and that short t-shirt—hell, I was hard as a rock in seconds. Not losing control and taking her right there on the kitchen island was the hardest challenge I’ve ever faced. Now, what I couldn't wrap my head around was why Carol was alone instead of having company; I’d find the answers to that soon enough. That little girl—though she was anything but little—was undoing me. I couldn’t get her scent out of my mind, t
CHAPTER 8CAROLMy workday was nearly over when my phone vibrated in my desk drawer, signaling a text. I pulled it out. My brow furrowed when I saw it was an unknown number. I tapped the screen to open the message.—Still at the office?Butterflies began to flutter wildly in my stomach. It had to be Will; no one else has my number except for Susan and my parents. I checked the time in the corner of the screen: five-thirty.—Yes. But I’m almost ready to leave. Do you need something? C.I signed off with my initial.—Yes. Save my number. W.The man loved giving orders. But this part had nothing to do with work. I ignored his request and left the phone on the desk. I gathered my things, grabbed my purse, and stood up."Ready to go?" I turned to see Marta."Yes. You?""Let's go then. I’m dying to get home, I’ve got things to do.""Right." I grabbed my phone just as it vibrated in my hand again. I read the message. “Why are you leaving me on read! That’s rude. W.”I stopped dead
