LOGINCHAPTER 2
CAROL “Yes, I’m fine.” I squirm in his arms; he sighs and, reluctantly, lets me go. I turn my head and look longingly at my spilled coffee on the ground. “I’m sorry,” I blink a few times and look at him. “Excuse me?” “I’m sorry for knocking over your coffee,” he says, nodding toward where it lies. “It’s nothing, Mr. Ashford. I…” I’m interrupted. “Why do you insist on calling me ‘sir’? How long have you been my daughter’s friend?” “Six or seven years, Mr… I mean, William. I can hardly even remember anymore.” “Will. Call me Will.” “Alright. Well, I should go now; Susan must be waiting for me.” The double meaning in his words didn’t go unnoticed by me. Or is it just me hearing what I’d like to hear? “Are you going home?” There was something strange in his tone when he asked that question; I’d even say he sounded nervous. “No. She’s coming to mine.” “Oh, in that case, let’s get you a new coffee and then Carlos can drive you.” “I… There’s no need, really.” “Come on, Carol. I don’t like having to repeat myself.” He was so close to me that I could feel his fresh, minty breath on my face. And his scent… Oh God, it’s undoing me. His eyes watched me expectantly, as if he wanted me to challenge him. I take a deep breath and nod. “I’ll accept the ride. But not the coffee—that wasn’t your fault. Besides, it’s already late.” “Fine.” He turns on his heels, taking the pink box I was carrying. “Are these for Susan?” “Oh, no. Those were just for me before she called.” “Isn’t that a lot for just you?” “When you’ve had a bad day and you see that your life is crap, nothing is too much.” “Watch that mouth,” I stop dead in my tracks behind him as I watch him walk. Did he just scold me? “In any case, that won’t solve the problem.” I walk fast and catch up to him, stepping alongside him. “No, I guess not. But I’m craving something sweet and delicious.” I say the latter with a double meaning. Will notices because he glances at me sideways. I feel the blood rush up my neck and pool in my cheeks; I lower my head to hide the redness of my face, hoping he didn’t see it. We walk one more block before stopping in front of the large building ahead of us, where it reads in black letters with silver borders: W&S REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS – ASHFORD’S Right above the main entrance. I see him take out his phone and put it to his ear while he steps away to talk. Shortly after, he turns and looks at me. The butterflies in my stomach, triggered by the heated look Will gives me as he scans my body, tell me to run—that my desire for him isn’t right. I shift somewhat restlessly. “Carlos is coming with the car now. Tell Susan to call me as soon as she can.” I nod my head. “Is something wrong?” I look at him, dazed. Damn, he must think I’m a freak. “No… well, yes.” “Yes or no? You have to make up your mind.” I roll my eyes to focus them back on Will. “The truth is, I just got fired. That’s why I’m wandering idly through the streets at two in the afternoon.” He watches me closely and strokes his chin with a thoughtful air. “I see.” He opens his mouth to say something else, but a car horn interrupts us, making us both turn in time to see Carlos step out of the car and walk around the front. He opens the back door and waits for me to get in. “Well, I guess it’s time for me to go.” I look him up and down, all six-foot-three of him. The intense gaze he gives me makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. We walk to the car; just as I’m about to get in, Will takes my hand, making my entire back tense up. If only he knew what his touch does to me. “Everything will work out.” “I guess so.” As I get into the car, he hands me the box and closes the door. With a nod from him, I watch as Carlos heads to the front and gets in. Through the car window, I watch Will, who stands on the sidewalk with his hands in his pockets, his gaze fixed on me as we pull away. For a nanosecond, our eyes lock, and I swear what I saw in those tired, gray eyes was desire. With a heavy breath, I lean back in the seat for the whole ride home, letting my thoughts get lost in how strange our encounter had been. What was he doing walking at that hour in the opposite direction of his office? But then again, what did I know about him and his daily routine?EPILOGUE: PART 3CAROLSince I already know the way to the doctor’s office, I don’t ask for directions; I simply walk to the door, which is slightly ajar, and knock before entering."Good afternoon, Doctor Kate.""Hello, Carol. How have you been?" She gives me a kiss on the cheek. Kate is a blonde woman with blue eyes, very beautiful for her age."Very well, Doctor, thank you.""And this man is...?" she asks."My fiancé, Will Ashford." Will shakes hands with the doctor. She takes a seat in the chair behind her desk, and we do the same."Tell me, what brings you here?""Well, you see, I wanted to know if I could switch to the injection instead of continuing with the pills.""What problem have you had with the pills? Any reaction or something like that?""She forgets to take them.""Will!" I shoot him a look warning him to shut up. This is exactly why I didn't want him to come with me."You forget to take your birth control, Carol?""To be honest, yes. I forget to take it
EPILOGUE: PART 2CAROL"Mr. Ashford." My man simply gives a nod of his head as a greeting.Carlos is waiting for us with the back door of the car open. I greet him as we approach. Once we're settled, we set off."Are you sure you want to get the injection?" Will shifts, looking somewhat uncomfortable."Yes, love. It’s just that I tend to forget the pills a lot, and even if I take them the next day, it’s not the same.""I understand."We spend the rest of the drive talking about work things or the wedding."We’re here," Carlos announces. Will gets out and helps me out of the car.We enter the clinic and take the elevator to the third floor. When the doors open, we walk over to Doctor Kate’s receptionist."Good morning," I greet the girl at the desk. "I have an appointment with Doctor Kate." The receptionist looks at me for a second."Your name?""Caroline Gómez." She looks for my name in a ledger."There are two people ahead of you. Have a seat; I’ll call you.""Thank you
EPILOGUE: PART 1CAROLThree months have already passed since I told Will I would marry him. Even now, looking at the small silver ring with a heart-cut diamond on my left hand, I couldn't believe I was getting married in a month. Marrying the man I had always longed for, the man who would soon be my husband. Now, I looked back and couldn't remember when it all began, or at what point our lives changed completely. With the help of Susan and Corinne—the latter having now moved in with us—I was organizing everything at a breakneck pace. My parents were coming a week before the wedding. By the way, the news shocked Mom; she can't accept that I'm marrying someone so much older than me, nearly her age. Other than that, she was thrilled to know it was Will I’d be marrying. Dad had a long phone conversation with Will; he gave me his blessing for my union with the man I love.I also sent the wedding invitations to Will's parents; although he initially refused, he eventually gave in. I ha
CHAPTER 66WILLI take her to the bedroom and lay her on the massive bed, kissing her forehead before leaving her there."Where are you going?""I have to make a call; I’ll be right back. Rest now.""All right."I head to the balcony, needing fresh air. I’ve never smoked, but right now I wish I had a pack to smoke the whole thing. I pull out my phone and dial Carlos’s number."Sir.""We’re staying tonight. You can come up and stay here with us.""Don't worry about me, sir. I’ll stay at a hotel. What time do you want me to pick you up?""I’ll let you know; the lady isn't feeling well.""Do you want me to take you to a hospital?""No. If she’s still like this tomorrow, I’ll tell you.""Very well. Good night."I end the call. I gaze at the beautiful city, watching people move in the distance on the illuminated pier by the beach. This would be a lovely place to live with Carol: I can see us walking along the shore, holding her hand, just the two of us alone.Lost in my thou
CHAPTER 65WILL"Silly. This means the problem of bringing Corinne here is solved. She can stay here." Looking at it from that perspective, it seemed fine to me."That sounds good. Although she can always stay with us, Carol. She’s a child who needs supervision.""I love it when you get all protective."We finished eating in silence, though that question I’d asked her in the car kept circling my mind, dying to escape my lips again. I know she doesn't want to marry me, but I crave for her to do so.I show her the entire apartment; even though it’s all on one floor, it’s very vast and spacious. We go out to the balcony to watch the sunset that was already beginning to fade."I was starting my university career when I met Emily. She was the most beautiful and intelligent girl I had ever seen on campus. It was so easy to approach her and talk to her." Out of the corner of my eye, I see Carol watching me with perplexity and curiosity. I keep my gaze lost on the beach; it’s easier to
CHAPTER 64WILL"I love you, Carol. I know I’m not perfect, that I’ll be screwing up constantly because I don’t know how the fuck not to ruin what matters to me. I know you’ll want to run far away from me when that happens, but I swear I’m willing to change and make this work. I just want you to be with me on that long road."I’m breathless by the time I finish speaking, but she says nothing; she just contemplates me with wide eyes. She places her hand on mine, and for a moment my heart races—only to stop dead when she pulls my hand away from her face and turns to the side, leaving me bewildered and incredibly pissed off. That was how we ended the remaining two hours of the drive, each of us absorbed in our own thoughts."We’ve arrived, sir," Carlos announces. Carol opens her door and steps out before Carlos can get it for her. I sigh, asking God for help.I watch as she takes in the place, an expression of awe on her face."Will..." She stands staring toward the pier visible i
