LOGINCHAPTER 5
CAROL “Damn, what a horrible, annoying noise,” I stretch out my hand and switch off my hateful alarm clock. “I swear I’m going to buy a better one,” I mutter. Who on earth likes waking up at six in the morning? Not me. I hate getting up early. I drag my heavy body to the edge of the bed and stand up. Today would be my first day at my new job as the secretary for the owner of the company; even though it was Thursday, it was fine—any day is a good day to start a new job. The first thing I do is head to the kitchen to make my coffee. I turn on the coffee maker, add the beans, and let it brew while I go to the bathroom: I brush my teeth, adjust the shower temperature, put my hair in a high bun, take off my clothes, and step in. The sound of the machine tells me the coffee is ready, so I step out. I wrap my body in a towel and go for my daily dose of caffeine; I know I’ll need it today more than ever. I check my closet looking for something to wear; I settle on a black and white polyester dress—elegant, knee-length, and sleeveless. Two tones that always give a sophisticated and confident touch; they never fail. I leave my hair down and do my brown eyes in a smoky style with black eyeliner and mascara. On my lips, I put a lighter, nude shade. I grab my black heels from the closet and search the whole place for my purse; I find it on the kitchen island next to my cell phone. I stop in front of it, puzzled to see it there. “Didn’t I take you to the bedroom with me last night?” A bit confused, but without time to overthink it, I grab the brown folder containing my personal information. I grab my keys, ready to go. I walk down the stairs and open the door; the first thing I see across the street makes me stagger slightly. My breath catches. I cling to the doorframe to keep my balance and avoid falling flat on my face. “Will I ever get used to seeing him? No, of course not.” Will Ashford, so perfectly impeccable in his three-piece gray suit, is leaning against the hood of his black car, looking incredibly authoritative and relentless, dark and dangerous. But above all, so unreachable. I check the time on my wristwatch: seven-fifteen. It’s still early. What was he doing here? His gray eyes examine me. He doesn’t smile, doesn’t do anything; not a single hint to give me the confidence to move. He pushes off the car and crosses the street. “Good morning, Carol!” He approaches me. I reach out my hand to shake his, but he ignores the gesture and kisses my cheek. My heart stops for a brief second. His scent—God, he smells so good; it’s a fantastic fragrance of mint and fresh water with a hint of sweetness. It melts me. “H-hello. What are you doing here?” I probably sounded like a fool, but this made no sense. “I came to take you to your new job,” his voice is so deep when he speaks that it hypnotizes you. “Oh! Mmm… I was planning to take the subway; you shouldn’t have bothered.” “You are no bother at all.” The way he looks at me and how he pronounced those words makes me think of other things… I shake my head and step out, locking the door and putting the keys in my purse. “Right, let’s go. I don’t want my boss to think I’m unpunctual,” I tell him as we walk to his car. He opens the passenger door and I get in. Seconds later, we were already merging onto the highway, which was starting to fill with cars rushing to their destinations. “Certainly. We don’t want to make a bad first impression.” I look at his marvelous profile, amazed. “So you have a sense of humor.” I see a hint of a smile, but it lasts very little; it disappears instantly. “Do you think I don’t?” “I… I didn’t mean that.” Damn! My intention wasn’t to offend him. “Relax, Carol. It’s fine.” I sigh and settle into the seat as I watch London pass by around us. “By the way, you look very pretty.” “What?” I blush completely, and this time I can’t hide it. “Thank you.” He seems not to notice and changes the subject. “Did you know about Susan and Henry?” “No more than you did… To tell the truth, we haven’t seen much of each other lately. So yesterday we caught up on a few things.” “I see,” he says thoughtfully. “Has she mentioned when she’s moving?” Wait! WHAT? I turn toward him. “Will, if you’re trying to get information out of me, I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you. I’m not that kind of person; if you want to know something, go and ask her, not me.” I was starting to get annoyed. “If you only agreed to give me a job with that intention, you’ve got the wrong person, I won’t…” I am interrupted. “Enough, Carol! You’re talking pure nonsense!” His voice is strong, commanding. He turns his head when we stop at a red light. “I didn’t hire you to give me information about my daughter. It was just a question, since she mentioned that you’d be moving into the apartment with us this week… I knew Susan had chosen her friendship with you well. But, dammit, you need to calm down.” Incredible, now I felt like a complete idiot! I just wanted to bury my head under the seat. I shut my big mouth and didn’t speak again for the rest of the ride to the company.EPILOGUE: PART 3CAROLSince I already know the way to the doctor’s office, I don’t ask for directions; I simply walk to the door, which is slightly ajar, and knock before entering."Good afternoon, Doctor Kate.""Hello, Carol. How have you been?" She gives me a kiss on the cheek. Kate is a blonde woman with blue eyes, very beautiful for her age."Very well, Doctor, thank you.""And this man is...?" she asks."My fiancé, Will Ashford." Will shakes hands with the doctor. She takes a seat in the chair behind her desk, and we do the same."Tell me, what brings you here?""Well, you see, I wanted to know if I could switch to the injection instead of continuing with the pills.""What problem have you had with the pills? Any reaction or something like that?""She forgets to take them.""Will!" I shoot him a look warning him to shut up. This is exactly why I didn't want him to come with me."You forget to take your birth control, Carol?""To be honest, yes. I forget to take it
EPILOGUE: PART 2CAROL"Mr. Ashford." My man simply gives a nod of his head as a greeting.Carlos is waiting for us with the back door of the car open. I greet him as we approach. Once we're settled, we set off."Are you sure you want to get the injection?" Will shifts, looking somewhat uncomfortable."Yes, love. It’s just that I tend to forget the pills a lot, and even if I take them the next day, it’s not the same.""I understand."We spend the rest of the drive talking about work things or the wedding."We’re here," Carlos announces. Will gets out and helps me out of the car.We enter the clinic and take the elevator to the third floor. When the doors open, we walk over to Doctor Kate’s receptionist."Good morning," I greet the girl at the desk. "I have an appointment with Doctor Kate." The receptionist looks at me for a second."Your name?""Caroline Gómez." She looks for my name in a ledger."There are two people ahead of you. Have a seat; I’ll call you.""Thank you
EPILOGUE: PART 1CAROLThree months have already passed since I told Will I would marry him. Even now, looking at the small silver ring with a heart-cut diamond on my left hand, I couldn't believe I was getting married in a month. Marrying the man I had always longed for, the man who would soon be my husband. Now, I looked back and couldn't remember when it all began, or at what point our lives changed completely. With the help of Susan and Corinne—the latter having now moved in with us—I was organizing everything at a breakneck pace. My parents were coming a week before the wedding. By the way, the news shocked Mom; she can't accept that I'm marrying someone so much older than me, nearly her age. Other than that, she was thrilled to know it was Will I’d be marrying. Dad had a long phone conversation with Will; he gave me his blessing for my union with the man I love.I also sent the wedding invitations to Will's parents; although he initially refused, he eventually gave in. I ha
CHAPTER 66WILLI take her to the bedroom and lay her on the massive bed, kissing her forehead before leaving her there."Where are you going?""I have to make a call; I’ll be right back. Rest now.""All right."I head to the balcony, needing fresh air. I’ve never smoked, but right now I wish I had a pack to smoke the whole thing. I pull out my phone and dial Carlos’s number."Sir.""We’re staying tonight. You can come up and stay here with us.""Don't worry about me, sir. I’ll stay at a hotel. What time do you want me to pick you up?""I’ll let you know; the lady isn't feeling well.""Do you want me to take you to a hospital?""No. If she’s still like this tomorrow, I’ll tell you.""Very well. Good night."I end the call. I gaze at the beautiful city, watching people move in the distance on the illuminated pier by the beach. This would be a lovely place to live with Carol: I can see us walking along the shore, holding her hand, just the two of us alone.Lost in my thou
CHAPTER 65WILL"Silly. This means the problem of bringing Corinne here is solved. She can stay here." Looking at it from that perspective, it seemed fine to me."That sounds good. Although she can always stay with us, Carol. She’s a child who needs supervision.""I love it when you get all protective."We finished eating in silence, though that question I’d asked her in the car kept circling my mind, dying to escape my lips again. I know she doesn't want to marry me, but I crave for her to do so.I show her the entire apartment; even though it’s all on one floor, it’s very vast and spacious. We go out to the balcony to watch the sunset that was already beginning to fade."I was starting my university career when I met Emily. She was the most beautiful and intelligent girl I had ever seen on campus. It was so easy to approach her and talk to her." Out of the corner of my eye, I see Carol watching me with perplexity and curiosity. I keep my gaze lost on the beach; it’s easier to
CHAPTER 64WILL"I love you, Carol. I know I’m not perfect, that I’ll be screwing up constantly because I don’t know how the fuck not to ruin what matters to me. I know you’ll want to run far away from me when that happens, but I swear I’m willing to change and make this work. I just want you to be with me on that long road."I’m breathless by the time I finish speaking, but she says nothing; she just contemplates me with wide eyes. She places her hand on mine, and for a moment my heart races—only to stop dead when she pulls my hand away from her face and turns to the side, leaving me bewildered and incredibly pissed off. That was how we ended the remaining two hours of the drive, each of us absorbed in our own thoughts."We’ve arrived, sir," Carlos announces. Carol opens her door and steps out before Carlos can get it for her. I sigh, asking God for help.I watch as she takes in the place, an expression of awe on her face."Will..." She stands staring toward the pier visible i
