The estate is quiet by ten.Margaret's team has been through and gone, which is what Margaret's team does, appearing and disappearing with the specific efficiency of people who understand that the most useful thing they can do after a significant day is leave no evidence that they were ever there except that everything is clean and ordered and the garden looks exactly as it did before thirty-one people had dinner in it, except for the driftwood arch, which stands at the far end in the dark doing what salvaged things do, which is persist.Sophia is on the terrace.I find her there when I come back from locking up the east wing, where the last of the guests were staying. She is in the chair she sat in on the Thursday we came alone, the one that looks over the garden, and she has her sketchbook open on her knee, but she is not drawing. She is looking at the arch in the dark.I bring wine. Sit beside her.She does not look up. "It looks different in the dark," she says. "Yes.""More perma

Sunday arrives softly. The second day of nothing required. I wake at six and lie still for a moment in the specific quality of a morning that has already decided to be gentle. The light through the curtains is doing what June light does, arriving without apology, making the room warm before anything in it has moved.Sophia is asleep beside me. Actually asleep. Not the almost-sleep of the night before the wedding or the restless processing sleep of important weeks. The deep, settled sleep of someone who walked two miles on a beach yesterday and drew for four hours and ate dinner on the terrace watching the sun go down over the water and fell asleep before ten, with the specific totality of someone who has used everything they have and has nowhere to be in the morning.I lie beside her and look at the ceiling and think about nothing in particular. This is new. I have spent forty-seven years filling every quiet moment with something. A brief to read. A call to return. A problem to work t

Diane Okafor arrives on a Wednesday. She is fifty-eight, and she walks into the foundation's new office space, three rooms on the fourteenth floor of a building six blocks from Kane Tower, where Sophia found herself and signed the lease on without telling me until it was done, with the specific quality of someone who has been doing this work for thirty years and is very certain about why she left the last place and equally certain about why she is here.Sophia meets her at the door. I am not there. This is Sophia's hire, Sophia's foundation, and Sophia's decision about who sits in the rooms where the work happens. I am at Kane Global in a board meeting that has been running since eight and will continue until noon, and I am, for the first time in my professional life, partially elsewhere while it runs. Not distracted. Present and competent. But be aware that something more interesting is happening six blocks away.Sophia texts at ten forty-three. She is extraordinary. She read every m

August becomes September without announcement. The city shifts. Not dramatically. New York does not do dramatic seasonal transitions. It does gradual ones, the heat becoming less absolute, the light arriving at a different angle, and the specific quality of September mornings that are cooler than August mornings by exactly enough to notice. The summer that felt permanent reveals itself as provisional, the way all summers do, and the city adjusts without complaint because the city has been doing this for four hundred years and has learned that adjustment is simply what living things do.Sophia notices September before I do. She comes downstairs on the first Tuesday of the month with the specific brightness she has when something in the external world has shifted and she has registered it before anyone told her to. She pours coffee. Stands at the window."September," she says. "Yes.""The light is different." "Yes.""I need to go to the estate this weekend. The arch in September light."

Edmund reads at the festival on a Friday evening. Four hundred people in a converted warehouse in Brooklyn, the industrial bones of the space doing something unexpected with the acoustics, the high ceilings carrying sound in a way that makes every word arrive with the specific clarity of something meant to be heard. The audience is the particular mix of a literary festival, people who read seriously and come to these events not for spectacle but for the specific experience of hearing someone say a true thing out loud in a room.Edmund stands at the podium without his notebook. This does not surprise me anymore. He has not used the notebook at a reading since the Cliffside Estate launch. He carries it always, the habit of a lifetime, but when he reads, he speaks from memory because the poems are so thoroughly his that reading them from the page would be like reading instructions for something he already knows how to do.He reads for forty minutes. I stand at the back with Sophia. She h
