Kyra POV"Hot damn," Chloe says. "I'd love to be the cheese in that sandwich."Rayne and I follow her gaze across my back yard to where Tor is talking with Sailor and Finn. We're sitting in chairs by the pool, catching up since I just got back from Maine. There are more people at the bonfire tonight since my father announced it was also to celebrate my birthday, which I really didn't want. I don't like being the center of attention."Seriously," Rayne agrees. "I don't know who's hotter. But it's basically a club sandwich since there's three of them. Let's do marry/fuck/kiss and figure it out.""Ooh, I love that!" Chloe squeals. "I'll go first." She narrows her eyes at the guys as her brain works them over. "I'd marry Sailor, fuck the hell out of Tor, and kiss Finn. And if Tavian was here, he'd be my alternate fuck. I can't get enough of him."I almost choke on my soda at her words about Tor. He's mine. I fight the urge to jump out of my chair and claw her eyes out.Rayne sits up str

Kyra POVI stare up at him, trying to catch my breath from walking too fast. Or maybe from being so close to him in this small space."What were you doing out there?" he asks. "Eavesdropping? That's not like you, Kyra."I shake my head and try to find my voice. "No. I was looking for you so I could say goodnight and thank you for playing the songs for me. I haven't seen you play since I was a little girl. I guess I just wasn't expecting to see you with Sydni. I'm sorry.""Don't apologize."Backing up a few inches, he glances down at my legs. "You skinned your knee."He grabs a paper towel from a shelf next to the washing machine, runs some cold water on it from the sink, and kneels down in front of me. He gently dabs at my knee with the paper towel, then tosses it into the trash. I wait for him to stand, but he remains kneeling in front of me, his hand on the spot behind my knee. Tor has fixed many booboos for me over the years, and maybe he's thinking of all those times, like I am

Tor POVSpeaking of chicks, it's been almost a week since I saw Kyra at the bonfire, and my emotions are still all over the place from that night. The way her eyes were glued to me, glowing with a mix of love and lust as I played the guitar did way more than just turn me on like mad. It made me itch to start playing again. Every night since then I've dragged my guitar out of the closet and sat in my back yard brushing up on my old favorite songs and toying around with some new ones.I miss my dreams.I can still feel her lips on mine, in that daring moment when she kissed me all on her own and almost made me tear her clothes off in Aiden's laundry room while he was probably twenty feet away eating her birthday cake.I feel sick. I feel tortured. I feel unhinged with want for her. I feel a deep ache in my heart that only she can soothe. I feel like I'm stabbing a dagger straight through my best friend’s back. The scales are tipping, though, and it's scaring the shit out of me

Tor POV"Yeah. It's kind of an addicting feeling.""It really is. And what about me working at the shop? Do you still want me when Gretchen leaves?"Yes, I want you with me every moment of every day of every year."I do but I have to admit, I think working at the Inn is way more glamorous and will give you more of a future. Why would you want to work in a dirty bike shop answering phones and doing mundane shit all day?""Because then I can be close to you. And it's your family's business. It's not just a random job to me. It means just as much to me as the Inn."I nod slowly and listen to the rush of the water that's barely drowning out the screams in my own head. She's doing everything she can to be part of my life, and I can either let her or I can put a stop to it. I can end this all now and watch her run back to Maine. I know she'll be okay. She'll forget about me eventually and will meet someone her own age, and I'll move on and find someone who isn't her and we'll both be fine.

Tor POVKyra ~ age fourteen Tor ~ age twenty-nine"Kyra Callis?"I look up from the test I'm taking at the woman standing at the door of my classroom saying my name. I recognize her as working in the principal’s office."Can you come with me?" she asks when we make eye contact."Um... okay." The other kids in my class watch me as I shove my book in my backpack and grab my bag. Some of them whisper as I make my way through the desks to the door. My teacher takes my test from me as I near her desk."Don't worry about the test, Kyra. You can make it up.""Is something wrong?" I ask the woman as soon as I get out into the hall. "Did I do something?""No, nothing like that. Your aunt and uncle are here."My aunt and uncle? As we walk down the empty hall toward the office, Uncle Toren and Aunt Sydni come into view, waiting for me in the front lobby. I can tell immediately by their somber faces that something is very wrong."Kyra..." Aunt Sydni says, taking a few steps forward. "There's
