The preliminary report reached the board the next morning, and the house felt the shift before anyone said the words out loud. Richard stayed locked in the study for most of the morning. The board’s next move reached Richard before noon, and it was harder than the last one. The formal review produced its first real consequence two days later. Richard came out of the study in the late morning looking like he had taken a hit he couldn’t fully absorb. He called Grant and Cole in first. Then he sent for Eve and Sloane. They stood in front of the desk while he stayed behind it. “The review has recommended temporary leave for senior people most closely connected to the exposure,” he said. His voice was flat and tired. “The board is taking it seriously. I have managed to keep the immediate damage limited, but I can no longer prevent all of it. Until the next phase is clearer, the restrictions here remain at maximum. No one leaves. No unsupervised contact. Cole keeps the watch. Grant keeps order. Any noise from inside this house will be treated as a direct problem.” He looked at Eve longer than at Sloane. “You remain central to how this reached this point. Richard didn’t come out of the study until almost noon, and by then the whole house already felt off. Eve had been up since early. She sat on the edge of the bed for a long time staring at the floor, then forced herself downstairs for coffee she didn’t want. Cole was already near the kitchen when she got there. He didn’t say anything. He just looked at her long enough to mark that she was accounted for and moved on. The constant checking had stopped feeling temporary a long time ago. It just felt like the way the house worked now. Sloane’s door stayed closed across the hall. They hadn’t really spoken in days. The break between them was still solid. The electronic lock on the apartment door made a heavy final sound when Cole left. No footsteps in the hallway outside her room. No low voices carrying from the study. No Cole appearing at the end of a corridor just to mark that she was still there.
