Chapter 1

When I finally got to my feet, my legs still felt weak. It wasn't until a tear landed on the back of my hand that I realized I was crying.Mom suddenly appeared before me. "Why are you crying again? Cole's been sick with this condition for years. Do you really have to cry about it every single day?"And besides, what do you think Roselle is going to feel when she sees you crying like this? You're going to upset her, too!"Maybe because I hadn't said a word for so long, Mom finally softened her tone. "Be a good girl, Rach. Just do it for me and stop crying, okay? Come inside with me. You know what you're supposed to do, right?"I looked up at her. My eyes were blurred with tears, and I couldn't make out her expression. But I knew she was impatient with me.Before I could collect myself, I was already dragged into the room. Seeing the tear streaks on my face, everyone looked gloomy, especially Cole Sullivan. He looked at me coldly. "So, you're my girlfriend? Sorry, but I don't reme

My compromise allowed everyone in the room to breathe a sigh of relief. Little did they know, this surrender would buy me permanent freedom.Cole, still lying in the hospital bed, suddenly asked, "Where's your ring?"I lowered my eyes to my ring finger. It was bare.I brushed him off casually. "Oh, I left it at home."Then, as if reminded of something, he explained, "I only asked because I noticed the ring on my own finger."I nodded, pretending I understood what he was going through. Whenever Cole lost his memory, it was almost as if he became a completely different person.Once, I was riding my bike to work when a car suddenly cut me off. I lost my balance and hit the ground hard. A familiar car passed right by me—it was Cole's. He didn't slow down for even a second.Back then, I told myself he must not have seen me. Maybe he wasn't even in the car.Today, I knew I could no longer lie to myself.Beside me, Roselle chimed in, "The ring is so pretty, Cole. I want one, too."A

Chapter 3

My wedding with Cole was scheduled for next week. His episodes of amnesia usually lasted about two weeks, which meant he and Roselle could get married without a hitch next week, and I could finally leave everything behind. When I got home, the first thing I did was hand in my resignation to my boss. Once I finished handing over my work, I would be free to leave. But clearly, Roselle wasn't content with the situation. Less than two days later, she showed up at my door in tears and had the lock picked—literally.I had changed the door code the moment I got home, and I had also put my family and Cole on the apartment complex's blacklist. Still, I never expected them to find a way in anyway. The moment Cole stepped inside, he started yelling at me. "Rachel, why did you change the door code?"I was speechless. "Because we're no longer together. What's wrong with me changing the code?"He was stumped.I knew that in the past, I would never have talked back to him. Now, I was becoming

Chapter 4

Once Roselle and Cole were gone, I took out the necklace Grandma had left me. Under the light, the gemstone shimmered with strange, brilliant flashes of color. Without a doubt, it was worth a fortune.I pulled up Amazon and used the necklace as a reference.I had mastered every one of Grandma’s jewelry-making techniques, so making a replica would be a piece of cake. The other thing I needed to deal with was the apartment. It wasn't a particularly large place, but I had bought it with every penny I had saved over the years.Mom and Dad had planned to sell it and set the proceeds aside for Roselle’s future. So, before that could happen, I needed to sell it myself.I contacted a real estate agent. Less than two days later, I found a buyer. It was a young couple. They took one look at the place and wanted to sign the contract on the spot. I agreed, though I thought I should make a few things clear first. For one, my family and Cole were probably keeping an eye on the place. There was

Chapter 5

The smile on Mom's face froze. "What did you just say?"She was ready to blow up when Dad hurried over with a smile plastered across his face. "Rach's just joking. Look at this place. Does this place look like it’s been sold? All the furniture is still here."They looked around the place. Since nothing seemed to be missing, they all assumed I was just joking.I knew this apartment was doomed whether I sold it or not. Now that I had told them the truth, whether they believed it or not was up to them.Cole had sharp eyes. He suddenly spotted the suitcase I had packed. "Where are you going?""I'm leaving for my trip around Eurora tomorrow morning," I said calmly. "Did you forget?"Only then did he relax. He made me an empty promise. "We'll get married when you get back."I nodded absently. Yeah, yeah, sure. First, he would give me a fake marriage certificate. Then, he and Roselle could live happily ever after. That night, I put on a convincing display of enjoying a pleasant dinner

Chapter 6

I didn't need to answer Mom's call to know what it was about. They were obviously going to make me pay the medical bills.I hadn't deleted my parents' numbers or blocked them online. After all, the real show hadn't even begun. I put my phone on Do Not Disturb mode and spent another day having fun.It wasn't until I saw a missed call from the security guard from my apartment complex that I answered the next incoming one. The second I did, I heard a familiar voice cursing the guard in the background."You idiot! I was just at her place over the weekend. How could she possibly have sold the house? Say another word, and I'll rip your mouth off!"The guard sounded exasperated. "Ms. White, these people are insisting on getting inside. I really don't know what else to do, so I had to call you.""I get it. Just let them in. Better yet, keep an eye on them. If things get out of hand, call the police."The guard sounded nervous. "You think they're actually going to hurt someone?"I laughe

Chapter 7

Cole had never seen anything like that before. The moment he saw the woman he loved get hurt, he jumped in front of Milo and challenged him to a one-on-one fight."I don't hit women. You got the guts to fight me?"Milo and Jasmine exchanged a look. The excitement in their eyes was unmistakable. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing his muscular arms."Challenge accepted."Cole's face immediately went pale. He was an office worker who spent his days behind a desk. Against a professional fighter like Milo, he stood no chance.Milo clearly took Cole's challenge seriously, for he wasted no time punching him straight in the face. It was obvious he had held back.Cole merely spun around from the impact before catching himself against the wall."Babe, are you okay?" Roselle called out in a soft, pitiful voice.Maybe hearing his wife's voice gave Cole another burst of courage, for he seemed ready to go again. This time, his eyes landed on Jasmine. She stood quietly to the side, looking s

Chapter 8

My family and Cole had no intention of giving up. After all, they still had one last trump card—the necklace. While I had Jasmine discreetly keep tabs on what they were planning, I cut my trip short and flew straight to Ameria. I went to a well-known jewelry design company.Three years ago, they had offered me a position. I had turned it down because I had no plans to leave the country. But now, I wanted to give myself another chance. The interviewer was thrilled to see me. The process went smoothly, and I was hired without much trouble.I had always possessed an exceptional talent for jewelry design, something I had largely inherited from Grandma.Since my parents never really cared for me when I was growing up, they left me at Grandma's place. Ironically, that ended up being a blessing in disguise. I grew up learning everything I could about jewelry from her.Whether it was designing jewelry or restoring it, I could handle the work with ease. That was why she left that necklace

Chapter 9

In the end, the matter could only be settled with compensation. Cole was the only one who managed to pay his share. The properties and cars his parents had prepared for him, together with their savings from several decades, barely covered a third of the total amount demanded. But a third was enough to get him out.As for what happened to Mom, Dad, and Roselle, I never found out.According to a reliable source, though, the auction house owner took them on a "trip" abroad. Only the owner came back. After that, I could finally put my mind at ease.I told Jasmine and everyone else to stop keeping tabs on Cole. After what happened, I doubted he would ever be able to live the comfortable life he had once enjoyed. As for me, I buried myself in my work and continued honing my jewelry-making skills. Just two years later, I had become an indispensable part of the company. One day, my boss came to me unexpectedly. "We're opening a branch in your home country. Would you be willing to he
