Each day at school, I got to know Jeff a little better. Even though Keegan was in the same lunch period, I didn’t even look for him any more. I finished Jada’s make up and we headed out to the car. Mom was already outside, but I didn’t look at my phone to read her text. “Ok Missy, I appreciate it,” he said with such a low voice I could barely hear him. Jada held his hand and caressed his arm. He smiled at her, but was too weak to really interact with her affection. I watched them for a second, but looked away before they saw me. They were sweet. She was sweet. I wished that the nurse hadn’t said what she said. My heart knew Keegan liked me in some capacity, but my brain knew it would never be in the way I wanted him to. Watching him grow to love someone else would be hard, but I had no choice in the matter. “Jada. I won’t be able to go to the homecoming dance tomorrow,” he said. “Oh my god! When we arrived, the shop wasn’t very busy. I thought for sure more people would be here to see Elsa Mae. She does such amazing work. She called me over right away. I didn’t even have time to sign in. She got me into the pink shampoo chair and began rinsing my hair. This was always my favorite part. The way she massaged my scalp should be a sin. I could literally fall asleep. Her fingernails just ever so slightly scratched my roots and my scalp. It was heaven.
