LOGINONE OF THE GUYS Sixteen-year-old Brees has spent most of her life being known as just one of the guys. It comes with the territory when your older brother’s best friend is Keegan—the handsome, curly-haired junior who has been around her family for as long as she can remember. Keegan is protective, funny, and annoyingly good at making Brees smile. To him, she’s always been his best friend’s little sister. Someone he looks out for. Someone he can joke around with. But Brees is starting sophomore year with a secret she can’t ignore anymore: She’s falling for Keegan. She knows she shouldn’t. Her brother would never approve, and Keegan has never given her a reason to believe he sees her as anything more than a friend. So Brees decides she’ll keep her feelings hidden and try to move on. But sophomore year has a way of changing everything. New friendships, school dances, football games, late-night conversations, and unexpected moments with Keegan make it harder for Brees to keep her feelings under control. And the more time they spend together, the more she begins to wonder if Keegan might feel something too. Keegan has his own secret: Brees isn’t as easy to ignore as she used to be. But crossing that line could mean risking his friendship with the person who matters most—and changing his relationship with Brees forever. Because sometimes falling for your best friend’s little sister isn’t the hardest part. The hardest part is figuring out whether she feels the same way.
View MoreSalty… sweet… yellow… warm… all the things that make me think of summer. The way the air smelled so crisp and clean. How the sun hit my neck when my hair was in a high bun. It all made me feel so happy and serene. Mine, however, is ending soon and I will officially be a sophomore at Huffington High School this fall.
My name is Brees Hamlin. I have lived here in Kentwood, LA my whole life. The town is small but we don’t know everyone. We are close to a few families, but not many.
My brother will be a junior this year, so he will get to drive me to school. My dad got him a car for his 16th birthday. A 2021 Jeep Wrangler. It was all blacked out and had tinted windows when his doors were on. I think dad feels guilty in some way for leaving us and my mom, but we truly just want him around. I do love the idea of being able to come to school in a car instead of on the bus, like I did in junior high. It makes me feel…I don’t know…MATURE. Casey says we have to be “mature” this year and I have to look “snatch”. Whatever that means.
Casey is my best friend and is incredibly outspoken, to a fault. She is from Japan. She moved here when she was about 8 years old. She still speaks fluent Japanese. It’s so beautiful listening to her and her parents. Though they mostly only yell at her in Japanese.
Casey always tried to get me to wear tighter fitting clothes. I like my softball shorts and my baggy tees just fine. Being an athlete is a huge part of my life and being a “tomboy” is just kind of how I’ve grown up. My brother, Baylen, is always bringing me to play pick up games with his friends and they all treat me like I’m one of the guys. It’s just what we do. My dad has always been so into sports. He loves the New Orleans Saints with his entire being. My brother and I are named after Drew Brees’ and his son. So Casey thinking I’m going to suddenly turn into some “it girl,” overnight is a little bit preposterous if you ask me. I will be 16 at the end of the year. I know, odd right? Well, Baylen and I were born in the same year, 11 months apart. His birthday is January 21, 2015 and mine is December 25, 2015. I’m in 10th grade however due to my birthday and he is in 11th.
“Brees! Catch!” I hear Baylen yell as a football slams into the side of my shoulder, knocking my watermelon onto the ground.
“Dude, are you kidding me right now? You’re such an asshole,” I yell, holding back tears.
I normally wouldn’t even care, but his friend, Keegan Patts, is standing right in my eyeline. Keegan is a junior as well and my brother’s best friend. His sun-kissed skin, dreamy blue eyes and beautiful blonde curls were sitting right there, while I looked foolish. He was also 15 and didn’t turn 16 until next month. Before I could say anything else, Keegan ran over and helped pick up my watermelon and grabbed the ball. He touched my shoulder where it hit me and asked me if I was alright.
“I’m so incredibly alright, since you are touching my arm,” I wanted to scream.
Instead I nodded and grabbed the watermelon from his hand while feeling my face turn very red.
He messed up my hair and kissed my hairline like he always does and said, “Ok squirt, suck it up. You know Bay thinks you are one of the guys sometimes.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry about that Brees. Also when did you start swearing?” Baylen asked, running over to check on me.
“Umm…” I stammered, “it was a slip. You really caught me off guard.”
“Sorry again sis. You know I’d never try to hurt you. We are headed to play two hand touch at Gilbert Park if you want to come,” Baylen said, squeezing me around my shoulders with one arm.
“Yeah you should come play, Squirt,” Keegan chimed in.
Baylen asked me to go shopping with him and Keegan. They needed a girl’s opinion about Christmas gifts for the women in their lives and apparently I’m the only platonic girl either of them knows.I didn’t want to help Keegan choose a gift for Jada. Coal. He can get her coal. That’s mean. I needed to recalibrate. He is Baylen’s best friend, not…Mine.Thinking about that made my stomach queasy. He would never be mine. Jada was so lucky that she got to call him her own. What I wouldn’t do to be able to say those sweet words. Keegan is my boyfriend. It gave me chills just thinking about it. “You ready squirt?” Baylen said, rubbing my back softly to get my attention.I definitely was in my Keegan stupor. “Yeah. Let’s do this.”As I grabbed my bag, Keegan walked into the front door. His blonde curls tumbling forward from his hood that he had pulled up on his head. Tan.Muscles.White teeth.Gorgeous.These were all of the things that flew through my brain in mere seconds. “Hey. Squ
The lake had been Casey’s idea.Which, honestly, should have been my first warning.Whenever Casey said, “I have an idea,” it usually meant there was about a fifty-percent chance it would be fun and a fifty-percent chance someone would end up yelling.By ten in the morning, half our friend group had taken over the shoreline.Music was blasting from a speaker sitting on top of a cooler. Someone had brought a volleyball net. Towels were scattered everywhere, bags of chips were being passed around, and Baylen and Keegan were arguing over who had forgotten the sunscreen.I stood at the edge of the water with my sunglasses pushed onto my head, watching them wrestle over a football.“You two are literally children!” I yelled.Keegan looked over his shoulder. The second he saw me, his entire face changed. There it was. That smile. The one that still made my stomach flip even though I was finally allowed to admit that I liked him.“There she is,” he called.I tried not to smile.I failed.Kee
“Babe, I know I hurt you and I’m going to try to do everything that I can to make it up to you. I was an idiot. My friendship should not have given way to shutting you out and it did. I should have pressed the issue with Baylen and made him aware that my feelings were more than a crush. They are more than a mere infatuation or school boy fantasy. They are real! And I love you more than I could ever express in words. I will show you over and over though for the rest of our lives,” Keegan pleaded. His one loose curl fell into his eyes as he begged for my acceptance. Did he just say for the rest of our lives? Keegan had no intention of letting me go and that’s all I wanted to hear. “Kee, can we go to your room and spend some time, not talking?” I asked, giving him a wink. I grabbed his hand and led him upstairs to his bedroom. His light was dimmed and the room was dark from his blackout curtains. I sat on the side of his bed. “Brees, this isn’t what I meant by showing you my love.
The next few weeks, after I left for camp, were filled with softball and FaceTime calls to Keegan. When I went back to my dorm for the night, I would shower the dirt from the ball field off of my body and climb into my giant LSU shirt and sweatpants and cuddle up in my bed. Keegan usually called me around 8:30 pm after football practice. He was always so eager to chat and shower me with kind words. “I miss you so much. I imagine you here every day in my arms,” he would say.We hadn’t seen each other in person since I left for camp and that kiss we had was our last. We also hadn’t talked about the level of our feelings. I knew I loved him, but I wasn’t sure if he was there yet. Being able to see his face and hear his voice every night made this distance so much more bearable. When I return home we will spend every moment together that we can. We were smitten with one another. Again, we just hadn’t said it. Those three words, eight letters. I keep trying to say it when we get off of t
