1) Dante's tortured dreams
The haunted sounds of a wolf's broken-hearted song lit up the darkness inside Dante’s mind, just like it had done every night since he left his mate asleep in their bed almost a year ago. Dante turned his head on a swivel in the obscurity, even though he knew he was still asleep. “Why do you do this to me every night, Theo! Do you enjoy torturing me?” Dante spat the words into the darkness and was only answered by the forlorn echo of a pathetic whimper as Theron’s vast body sulked into view. The normally large majestic beast now looked ragged and old, his head hung low between his shoulders and the wolf walked with such an exaggerated bow in his back that his knuckles drug the ground like lifeless attachments, “you torture us all, ignorant boy.” Dante scowled at his wolf and closed his eyes, “leave me alone asshole, I saved her...you stayed, is she safe...is she happy?” Dante’s eyes snapped up to meet the beast’s golden gaze he couldn't help but ask after her, but instead of an answer Theron just tipped his massive snout upward, “matters of the human heart are for a human...you wish to know her heart? Then go back and have it.” Dante swung his fist, but Theron never moved. Dante’s hand connected with his muzzle, and the wolf’s head jerked to the side, but he made no sound. Dante could feel his nightmares coming back, and he screamed into the dark, “NO! Theo, stop this. I don't want to watch this again... I can't.” The wolf stood to his full height and roared into the blackness above them before he faded away like mist. Dante sank to his knees as color began to swirl and dance all around him.
Soon the melodic sound of Mj’s laughter pierced Dante’s ears, and he began to cry instantly, “what are you doing down there, come on!” The rich red glow of Mj’s hair lit up the dark as her full body appeared in front of Dante and, just like every night, she reached her hand out to him, and he took it. As they walked, Dante tried to stop her, or wrap his arms around her, but they passed straight through her like the ghost she was to him now. Dante stared at her smile as long as he could. The sight both broke his spirit and kept him alive with the hope he might see her like that again one day.
As soon as Dante’s heart began to warm to the sight of his smiling mate, another sound ripped the illusion away. It was that of a wolf, but not Theron. Dante tried to stand in front line of Mj to protect her as Talia came sauntering into view. “NO,” Dante growled and Talia smirked at him before she waved her hand and Mj suddenly appeared in front of Dante. “You can’t have him bitch, he’s mine,” Mj yelled and Talia smirked but did not speak. Dante tried again to grab Mj but like always his hands floated right through her, “kitten, run... please baby, leave now.” Dante’s cry was desperate and pleading, but the two women acted as if they could not even hear him.
“The assassin is Original and his seed should not be tainted with Omega human trash, don't worry little Omega... we can use you as my vessel.” Talia spoke with a dead calm to her voice, and Dante shouted at the top of his lungs again, “NO!” but his words did nothing to stop the unfolding madness. Talia shifted immediately, and her enormous wolf grabbed Mj by the hair and lifted her from the ground, “I will have what is mine, and you will die.” The enormous multicolored wolf snapped its jaws and as Mj tried to fight back Dante watched in horror as the beast roared and seized the flailing Mj by her arm; lifting her high into the air as she screamed and thrashed, the wolf clutched onto one of her ankles and let a sickening laugh burst from her chest before she tore Mj in half and let the bloody body parts slump to the ground before she turned to Dante and shifted back to her human form. “I will do whatever it takes to keep our species alive, and they will reward me for it... master promised.” Dante’s stomach churned at the lunacy behind Talia’s remarks and as he struggled to lunge at her, she disappeared, and he fell into a sea of haunted, dreamless nothing once more.//

In the weeks and months that followed Dante and Mj set to work building a pack their wayward people could call home. Some chose to leave, Mj agreed and almost insisted that they all stay in her building in Lowder until they figured out where they wanted to be. She assured Dante this was the best course of action as it kept them safe while they learned about the world and kept the Bijou pack safe, as the Alpha’s could easily keep an eye on anyone wishing to leave. Mj and Lila spoke on the phone almost daily, and the Quicksilver Alpha had even gotten her techno - impaired friend to do video calls, so they could truly visit with one another. In that time, the two women had exchanged troubling tales of walkers that continued to plague the outskirts of Bijou territory, while the Quicksilver pack was having its own trouble training hunters and tracking down the other Triad testing facilities. Mj looked at the phone in her hand and then at her mate, “I think she hung up on me,” she said and Dante laughed as he grabbed the small square device from her hand and tossed it over his head, “good, now I get you all to myself, yummy” he growled before wrapping his arms around her and burying his face into the center of her chest and inhaling. Mj cupped his face, smashing it between her breasts, “we have time for this later Alpha, we have a pack to rebuild and a family to prepare for,” she said and Dante looked up into her eyes with an excitement she had never seen as he placed the palm of his hand over her stomach, “are you,” he asked, and she let a laugh blast from her chest, “hell no, number one, it’s way too early to know… I think, and two I was actually talking about Moxie and the brood of babies he and Jay now have,” Mj finished and Dante looked at her, first, slightly disappointed and then confused, “kitten,” the Alpha cocked his head, “how the fuck,” he began and Mj laughed

Azreal led Lila by the hand toward the Alpha’s private office, and although she knew they had to make this call now, it did not stop her from dragging her feet all the way to the desk. Azreal smirked at the new furniture arrangement before pulling the large ornate armchair out from the desk, “your seat my lady,” he rumbled, and although she suddenly wanted nothing more than to rip his clothes off and let him have his way with her right there on the desk, she was now the acting Alpha and unfortunately that was a fantasy she would have to put on hold. Lila sat back in the chair while Azreal pushed her up to the desk and as she reached for the phone, Azreal put both of his hands to work on her shoulders. The sound of hushed voices woke Azreal with a start as he realized his youngest children were no longer cradled between his arms as they had been when he fell asleep.
