KATRINA

Cold shivers went down my spine as an eerie chilliness consumed the atmosphere. I sat up on the bed that had magically appeared in the dull forest and looked around me... I could see nothing but persistent darkness.

Then... I noticed a golden glitter sparkling from behind a pine tree.

Curious, I climbed out of the vanishing bed and walked towards it. The glitter shook and grew brighter.

When I took a step closer, looking around me, I heard it sniff the air. Its visible ears twitched and then it dashed away. But for some reason, I knew it wasn’t me.

Following my instincts, I ran after it. The cold wind engulfed my body like water in an icy ocean and I picked up my pace.

I strained my eyes to recognize the golden figure that ran ahead of me as I eluded every possible obstacle in my path. Then I stopped. Not due to the weakening exhaustion that had gotten to my knees, but because of what I saw.

What I had been chasing all along was a golden-furred wolf that emitted golden light like the sun. It moved faster than anything I knew, faster than a Lycan. Its scent was glorious and pleasant.

But I heard something behind me. It was panting. It was speeding and it was coming straight for me. Before I could turn to face it, it pounced on me and I released a glass-shattering scream.

“F*ck!” I moaned as he licked my stiffened nipples with all the pleasure in the world.

Startle awake. It was always the normal routine after my usual golden wolf dream but not today. I simply shot my eyes open since I've had that dream for almost two years now. And it started on my sixteenth birthday when I should have met my wolf counterpart... But I didn’t.

I opened my wardrobe, scanning my eyes through my clothes. I did have nice clothes but not as many and pretty as my younger sister, Kendra. She got her wolf at fourteen. I’m almost eighteen and I don’t even have my wolf yet. She's highly praised in the pack because of it and it got into her head.

I pushed that thought aside and picked a short white slip dress. I had training with father today, the only person that cared about me. I put on a free black leather jacket over it, with matching leather knee boots.

I ponytailed my caramel blonde hair and entered my bathroom, which was the smallest in the packhouse, and washed my face, staring at myself in an old-fashioned mirror that was broken by the sides.

My golden eyes were encircled by a touch of hazel and my face was smooth and clear, except for a hard-to-notice mark on my left cheek, closer to my ear where mother had slapped me once.

I was five-feet-two, which is shorter than average for a wolf.

I would have worn a golden dress today but I had already worn gold twice this week. I wore gold so often that those that cared knew it was my favorite color.

I didn’t have perfume or make-up so I quietly left my room and headed for our special training ground. I was already two minutes late and dad would surely scold me for that.

As I walked down the stairs of the packhouse, the other wolves looked at me with disgust. They must have suspected where I was going. One of them whispered something in the other’s ear and the other laughed while keeping their gazes on me.

The wolves of my pack thought it was a complete waste of time to train a wolfless wolf. I understood that but couldn’t they make it less obvious? That's the goal anyway, isn't it?

I was glad I didn’t have sharp ears yet or I would have to listen to all the things they said about me.

I was about to step outside when I remembered. I hadn’t given mother her medicines yet. Her loving daughter, Kendra, was too high-ranking to do the job for her. So the useless omega daughter was perfect for the job.

Besides, it was just another excuse to mock me early in the morning. I rushed back into my room and picked up the medicines before heading for my mother’s room.

I was about to knock on her door when something very unusual happened. My senses doubled. Golden light shone from my eyes and I could see things I never knew were there.

I could hear my heart beating and the blood flowing through my veins. My ears were picking up sounds I never thought existed. I could even hear an ant walking on the ground and a butterfly flying out the window. I had the urge to run out of the packhouse, into the forest, and just let go.

To let whatever was dying in me come out... to be free.

But my ears picked up another sound. They were moans, flesh hitting against flesh, and a sexual aura surrounding the room. Without thinking twice, I kicked the door open.

And there I saw my mother, Selene. Her body was wrapped around a man who wasn’t my father and they were doing things. Disgusting things that made my stomach churn. I unconsciously dropped the medicines on the floor and they looked at me, shock written on their faces.

“Mother!”

Her eyes went black. “Ka..."

Before I could see their further reactions, I sped from her room and as I did so, all the special senses I once had went with it.
