Most free Toon content is offered as promotional free chapters, which are usually available on the Toon app/website and can change from time to time. For now, most readers start reading for free on the Toon app/website and then hit the paywall after a few chapters. I was just browsing around for something more action-oriented and found this No. 1 Supreme Warrior thing. The main character pretends to be weak but is actually ridiculously powerful. The free chapters provided an excellent preview of the underdog-to-overlord arc that the paid chapters would continue.

Legitimate sources of free TopToon episodes that I am familiar with include the official TopToon website, and their mobile application that can be downloaded for free from Google Play and the App Store. For a large number of ongoing series, the first chapter or two are released for free as a preview for new readers. The ethical considerations for not paying for individual subscriptions to various creators and translators whose work you enjoy in a timely fashion while they get to keep the coins and subs for that work is an interesting one. The fact that fan scanlation of comics and light novels in English was created in order to address the lack of English translations of comics and light novels in the first place means that there has to be some consideration for the creators and translators of official and timely translations of the works that one reads for pleasure. The thought of gaining access to episodes of a new comic or novel by grabbing them from an illegal aggregator rather than paying for them makes me less inclined to do so now that the creator’s income will actually be affected by my actions rather than that of a large corporation.
This way of thinking is what led me to use the official free passes for my current reads, even though reading at such a slow pace is a pain for me. At least I’m repaying for the work that the creator made.

Post-purchase, I discovered loads of other hidden gems which I wouldn’t have found searching for the more popular titles on ‘pirate’ sites. The official app’s recommendation engine does a pretty good job of guessing what you might like once you’ve read enough, whereas pirate sites only surface the most popular stuff, locking itself into a cycle where only the biggest titles get any love.
I feel like I have even more freedom to explore now with the risk-free model. I start lots of series and often end up dropping them but I don’t feel any guilt since I “paid” for them already. This curated experience and way to discover new titles is actually a really cool value-add that is not available on aggregator sites where you get to read lots of static lists of titles. You are paying for access to a library of titles and a really great discovery tool.

Two years or so ago, when I first started reading, fan translations to Korean were generally the primary method for those outside of Korea to read their favorite stories. These days with simulpub of many of the top titles and aggressive copyright protection, many of these fan translation pipelines are slowly drying up. The remaining free sources are so saturated with intrusive ads that it’s almost impractical to read them on mobile and even on desktop with an adblocker, the images are too often poorly compressed.

I just wanted to say that I miss Batoto so much when it was the best. All manga and novels were in one place. The interface was very simple and comfortable to use. I have not found any other application or website that can give me the same feeling as I have now. I am trying to manage to read my novels by putting bookmarks on a few of my favorite web pages in my bookmark folders. But sometimes I get so frustrated that I wish to give up reading novels all together because the effort of searching for chapters that have been translated properly into English is just not worth it. I know this is a bit dramatic but this is how I feel right now.
