I’ve spent countless hours diving into m m romance audiobooks, and while free options are rare, there are a few hidden gems. Librivox offers some classic romance titles, though they’re not exclusively m m. If you’re open to trials, platforms like Audible often have free credits for new users, and you can snag titles like 'Red, White & Royal Blue' or 'Boyfriend Material' before canceling. YouTube sometimes has amateur narrations of popular m m romances, though quality varies. Public libraries are another goldmine—apps like Libby or Hoopla let you borrow audiobooks for free if your library subscribes. Just search for authors like TJ Klune or Alexis Hall.

Another important point to consider are the accessibility features that platforms offer. Often, Audible and Libby feature speed up, sleep timers, and bookmarks to name a few examples. These little features can greatly improve your listening experience. The majority of pirated files are scattered throughout random MP3 players and lack these features. But the biggest value of a well-functioning platform is the integrated experience of a library or of subscription services. The convenience that these offer far outweighs the amount of money you spend. The value of this integrated experience is often easily overlooked in the war for dollars that is going on in the e-book space.

I look for novels that are around 40k words long and are 12-18 hours long when purchasing audiobooks through Audible. They generally come in at one credit per novel, which is a great value when compared to nonfiction audiobooks that are 6 hours or so long. I use Libby to test out audiobooks for free and I add them to my Audible wishlist if they are popular enough to have a long wait list. I have to check my library’s offerings every day or so, but occasionally I’ll stumble upon a brand-new 40k audiobook within two weeks of its release, and feel like I’ve won the lottery. (‘The End and the Death’ was the last time this happened to me.) It’s not the easiest way to read, but it’s free, and it’s immediate – and sometimes, that’s all that matters.

Spotify does have some audiobooks. The app isn't really designed for listening to them. For starters I recall you can't even add bookmarks, which makes the experience pretty clunky. It’s better to stick to music there.

I don’t get the free thing. If people want to consume the media then they should pay for it. It will ensure that the people involved in the production of the media are paid for their work. You can wait for sales on Audible or even use a credit. For $16 it’s not that expensive. It’s like the price of two movie tickets. For people who cannot afford to purchase media then the free version at the library is the intended way to consume it. There’s no reason to seek out illegal free versions of a massively commercial product such as this. The work was produced by someone, it was written by someone and it was narrated by someone – respect it even if you think it’s awful.

Most thrillers rely on psychology for their effect. When experienced as an audio book the suspense is amplified because the listener has to experience the plot twists at the same pace as the narrator reading. I found that when reading a thriller my eyes would be racing down the pages to find out what happened next but when listening to an audio book I was fully engaged and the big plot twists were a total surprise. This is the value of the proper audio book version and the reason to avoid a poorly encoded version with jumps and skips that would ruin the carefully constructed rhythm of the thriller.

Follow the metadata. So the book was free and you liked it? Look up the publisher (e.g. Aethon Books for sci-fi, Moonflower Books for romance) and check out their other books, including those that are currently free or even cheaper than that. The publisher’s name as displayed on the Amazon book page links to the publisher’s webpage, displaying a complete list of published books by that publisher. Such a list will typically contain not only other free books by your favorite author but also other titles by other good writers, all of whom have been vetted by an editor you seem to like. That makes for a nice cluster of good reads, more so than just a list of books by a single author.

I’m roughly halfway through this. I’m trying to avoid spoilers for the time being but it’s all interesting, especially as everyone else is describing how it actually comes together. It sounds quite different from my current experience of it.

I think the main thing that collaborative updating can bring is when a free resource site goes down or changes its terms of service for audiobooks. Often it is the users of said service who will first notify others of the change, on Reddit. This means that threads can be updated (often with a strike-through of the old link and a new one) long after the original post was made. I’ve seen comments from a year ago or more be updated by newer comments and that kind of self-correcting is only really possible in a highly active online forum. A static blog post published in 2020 listing out ‘10 Best Free Audiobook Sites’ is often of little use a year or more later, but the same topic posted on Reddit can be very useful as the discussion can be updated with new information on an ongoing basis.

I wasted an entire afternoon of my life trying to find the perfect “free” audiobooks for you. That meant scouring out all the free trials and then putting every popular audiobook on hold at the library to see how fast they would come in. Along the way I found a ton of very poorly made “free” audiobooks that I wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy. But if you’re looking for a particular book, then search for that book followed by the word “audiobook” on YouTube. There are often samples of audiobooks for books you want to buy — in the form of free chapters — from the authors or publishers of said books. Other people just made full, unabridged versions of books. I haven’t figured out how I feel about those. They could be a good way to test out an audiobook’s narration before buying it, I suppose. But then you should support the creator if you liked it. For purely free and legal audiobooks, your public library can’t be beat. Put holds on the popular ones and then wait for them to come in, it’s like getting a present from past you.
