Do you know who said that? I chased down the source for you and it appears to be from Theodore Roosevelt’s autobiography from 1910 (competition for jealousy). I have seen this quote mistakenly attributed to C.S. Lewis or even Confucius but the quote as it was originally written (or re-written) is classic. In fact it’s a concept that psychology has been able to confirm in relation to social comparison theory but it’s also been written beautifully over 100 years ago by someone else. I actually really like this quote in The Midnight Library where the characters live out alternate lives of comparison to each other.

They were betrayed in the worst way, and have to find their way through adulthood with so much unresolved between them. For much of the book, the two main characters are essentially strangers, struggling to reconcile the intimacy of their past with the pain of what was done to them. And the central metaphor of the ‘strangers’ concept is that you can’t erase the intimacy in order to erase the pain. The book’s slow, introspective pace was lovely to me, and really, the focus of the book is on the emotional revelations of the two main characters, not on a bunch of plot twists and conflicts. So, if you’re looking for a fast, sexy reunion book, this isn’t it. This book is for savoring the ache of lost love.
