Has anyone mentioned W.H. Auden? His technical mastery is just absurd. Pick up his 'Collected Poems'. The formal control, the wit, the intellectual heft—it’s like watching a master architect at work. You may not write formal verse, but seeing how he uses rhyme and meter to reinforce meaning is an incredible education. A poem like 'Musée des Beaux Arts' teaches you more about tone and understatement in 21 lines than a whole shelf of writing manuals.

I'm gonna be the dissenting voice and say reading poetry to 'improve your writing' can backfire. You start parroting voices instead of finding your own. Maybe just read voraciously in the genre you actually want to write in, and read poetry for pure pleasure. Let it seep in unconsciously. The 'improvement' happens in the background, when you're not trying. Forcing it can make your work feel derivative. Just find poets you genuinely love and read them until their books fall apart.

Read work that makes you uncomfortable. Poetry that deals with difficult subjects, uses challenging language, or comes from a perspective utterly foreign to you. That discomfort is where you learn. It stretches your empathy, your vocabulary, and your understanding of the human experience. If you only read what you already like, you'll just keep writing the same poem. Go find the poets who confuse, irritate, or baffle you. Sit with that feeling.

What best poetry books in English help writers improve their own poems?

I always recommend pairing a technique book with a collection that exemplifies it. Read 'A Poetry Handbook' (Mary Oliver) alongside Elizabeth Bishop's 'Complete Poems'. Bishop is the technician's technician—every word, every comma, is meticulously placed. Studying her work shows you Oliver's principles in action at the highest level. The combination of theory and pristine example is unbeatable. You learn the rules from Oliver, and then you see a master who followed, bent, and sometimes transcended them in Bishop.

Collaborative or anthology projects are fun. 'Poem-a-Day: 365 Poems for Every Occasion' gives you a daily bite-sized piece. It becomes a habit, like a vitamin. You're exposed to a wild variety of voices and styles without any effort. By the end of a year, you'll have a much better sense of your own taste than if you’d read five complete collections by similar poets.
