I copy him, and soon both our hands are slowly turning green. “What kinds of books do you like to read, Anara? Romance novels with damsels in distress?” he jokes, making me laugh. “Yes, I like romance novels too. But I never had many of those on my shelf,” I admit, a hint of bitterness slipping in. “I could only read whatever I could find around.” “Do you have a favorite?” Riven asks eagerly, and I pause for a moment to think. “Yes. A poetry book my mother used to read to me,” I say, my voice warm with nostalgia. “I even memorized one poem from it. It was my favorite.”

A single armchair squats in the corner, worn at the arms, a reading lamp bent over it like a question. Julian Croft has a hidden library. The ice king, the man who dismantles empires before breakfast, reads poetry in secret. I walk the shelves. Keats. Frost. Neruda. Dickinson. And Rilke. The spine was cracked at multiple points, and when I opened it, the pencil marks were everywhere — single words underlined, question marks in the margins, occasionally a longer note in handwriting that was smaller and more controlled than I expected. Sharp. Precise. I sat in the worn reading chair and opened to a marked page and read.

I close the door quietly. I spend an hour in the smaller library looking at the books. He has everything. Fiction. Nonfiction. Art books. History. An hour later, after searching for anything to help us within books that ranged from brand new to hundreds of years old, I huffed with disappointment and decided to stretch my legs; my pale finger trailed over the spines of books, dust painting my fingertip. He had a point. You didn’t need to belong to something to appreciate it—just like how I didn’t have to be a wolf to love a werewolf. His words hit me deeper than they should have, awakening something inside me that I hadn’t fully acknowledged.

The fireplace crackled softly, casting amber light across the lakehouse living room. Shadows danced across the walls as the wind outside whispered through the trees. Inside, time felt suspended.
