My experience was just okay but for a reason that I couldn’t get past to put the thing on hold temporarily. In a pleasant surprise, Novelpack’s customer support emails were super helpful and within a day they would cancel a subscription. Support@novelpack.com. Email from account email. Request for subscription cancellation. It works as a temporary fix until Novelpack figures this out and I wouldn’t have to spend multiple minutes going back and forth.

It's interesting to note that all these digital services go through similar phases of hassle as you try to stop using them. Be it a gaming app, a music streaming service or even a new platform that you signed up for, it's mostly the same ride. Services that have a simple 'Cancel' account link in account settings are a rarity. AlphaNovel is not one of them. You will have to confirm your intention to leave a couple of times before the service is willing to let you go.

Using the 'Report a Problem' link on the Apple App Store / Google Play receipt for the app has worked for others in getting a cancellation / refund investigated. I had to do this with another app that made cancellation impossible, and Apple sorted out the refund and cancellation for me. Reporting that an app's practices are deceptive (to make cancellation difficult) is within the app stores' terms and thus a valid thing to complain about if the usual methods of cancellation fail in an undesirable way. It's a more nuclear option, but might be worth trying if usual methods fail.

Understanding the psychology behind these flows is quite interesting. By displaying numerous ‘are you sure?’ screens and special offers on the way out, the institution knows that a certain percentage of customers will change their minds somewhere along the way. The institution is designing a churn-reducing funnel, and your job is to be that user who in the end clicks ‘No thanks’ to all of the offers along the way. In fact, don’t even read the offers if you’re determined to leave.
Follow the cancel link. It is typically a less prominent, plain-text link to “Continue to Cancel” or “Cancel Anyway” compared to the more prominent, coloured and larger link to “Stay with us!”. Look for the less attractive option in this scenario. It is a small act of defiance against psychological manipulation to click on the less attractive option. Your future bank account will thank you.

It’s so “normal” now for apps to build in “dark patterns” to prevent cancellation within the app. For some reason, I just had a very similar struggle with an audiobook summary service a while back – managed to resolve in the end by persisting for 3 days and then sending 3 emails, and eventually threatening a chargeback. Your problem with Flick Reels would likely get much better results from a search for “cancel Flick Reels Reddit” – there are often useful threads where someone has pored over the necessary steps to cancel in detail, far better than the actual help page.

It’s also possible a creator has fulfilled their goals and intention for a project, to conclude it and move on. We can never know for sure whether they’d fought for more or were perfectly content with what they’d created without them coming out and stating it. It’s not necessarily a negative cancellation.

I thought I was the only one having trouble. Was my experience on 'That Other Novel App' this annoying? Apparently not, as it’s a common experience across all platforms of buying and canceling novels. I understand that there is a “find the hidden menu, click on 3 other offers in the process, eventually click to cancel” process to cancel a subscription on Webnovel too. Thanks for spelling it out for me though. I feel your pain, cancellees. May your TBR piles shrink and your bank accounts grow in the coming days.

I’m also in the process of cancelling my subscription to their paid service. Unfortunately, the latest short dramas have had very poor audio quality – from scratchy sound to audio cut & pasted in a very unprofessional manner. I’m hoping to complete the only ‘good’ series of drama that they have currently. To cancel my subscription, I’ll follow the standard process for iOS (as this is where I access the service). It’s a painful process and it would be great to be able to give feedback as to why one is cancelling – but alas it seems they don’t care. Good luck with your cancellation process – it’s a tedious affair.

There is so much relief in canceling a subscription to something you didn't even use in the first place. That charge no longer exists in your budget, and that can feel like a raise. But it’s also the space that you had been reserving for feelings of ‘I should really use this’ that has been given to you. Use that space to realize that you aren’t canceling books, you’re just gaining a greater sense of your finances. That’s a wonderful thing and it’s so much better than the brief high you got from signing up for it in the first place. It’s through these not-so-fun screens to retain you that you come to the end and find that wonderful thing.

The worst case scenario that I saw recently was when an app got removed from the Play Store but the subscription to that app was still active. It happened to me with the wallpaper app that I was using recently. I could not find it in my list of subscriptions for a long time. Later I found out that it was still listed under my subscriptions but with some generic name and icon of the app. If you suspect that this is what’s happening with you then you need to look very closely at the name of the merchant and the last 4 digits of your card that get charged. Although you can still try to cancel the subscription from the link to Google payments where you can see all your subscriptions, the cancel button may be greyed out or missing. In such case you need to contact the support. In my case I had to use the link ‘Report a problem’ next to the subscription in question. After verifying my account the support was able to cancel the subscription for me.
