As a fan of Laurie R. King's detective novels, the timeline with Sherlock Holmes got confusing after book five. Need the full series sequence for my reread.

Honestly, I just google 'Mary Russell series order' every time I finish one because I can never remember what’s next. There’s a good Wikipedia page that has both lists side-by-side. Saves me the headache of figuring out where 'Pirate King' fits in the 1924 marathon.

Don’t forget 'The Murder of Mary Russell'. That title is a spoiler in itself, but chronologically it’s a pivotal point with massive flashbacks to Mrs. Hudson’s past. It reshapes your understanding of the entire household. Its placement in the series order is deliberate, as it uses your knowledge of the present to re-contextualize the past. Reading it out of sequence would dilute its powerful revelations.

The middle books, from 'The Language of Bees' through 'Garment of Shadows', are a tight serialized arc. Before that, the novels are more episodic. So if you jump into, say, 'The God of the Hive' without the previous one, you’ll be utterly lost. Pay special attention to that cluster.

I'm a mood reader. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a gritty, early Russell-and-Holmes-in-Palestine story, so I grab 'O Jerusalem'. Sometimes I want the mature, married detective duo in a country house mystery, so I grab 'The God of the Hive'. The beauty of the series' non-linear order is that it's almost like a collection of stand-alones within a larger arc. You can dip in and out by mood without too much confusion, as long as you know the basic premise. The difference between orders is less critical if you're not doing a strict marathon.
