I miss the sense of sheer wonder in some of the older styles. They weren't afraid of being unabashedly beautiful or awe-struck. A lot of modern fantasy shorts are so concerned with being clever, grim, or subversive that they sometimes forget to evoke that pure, childlike sense of 'what if.' The style can become cynical, a knowing wink to the audience. Don't get me wrong, I love clever deconstructions, but I wish we hadn't partly abandoned the straightforward delivery of awe.
