Which Devices Support My Desi Net App For Streaming?

I've been hearing about DesiNet for all the latest Bollywood series, but what streaming devices actually support the app? My Roku stick seems outdated.

The Desi Net app will work on most of the modern smartphones and tablets running on Android and iOS platforms and also on most of the streaming media players like Fire TV, Chromecast and Roku. Just head over to your device’s app store and search for the app. I actually needed something to watch between my main shows and ended up reading ‘Wet Desires: {A Steamy Collection}’ – a collection of very short, very sweet romance stories, each one a self-contained read, perfect for a short break from a long show.

It’s a weekend, I’m going back and forth between devices to get my fix of desi net so I’ve got quite high standards. As far as commutating and downloading on the move, my phone and tablet both have full-featured Android and iOS apps for all the services I use. For watching TV at home, I use an Android TV box and a Fire TV stick. They both have really quick interfaces and open up apps fast, and they stream in 1080p which is really good for the TV. I also use Chromecast from my phone to TV to watch stuff with my friends. It’s just so effortless.

A few of the newer TV’s have native apps for products like Samsung and LG but I find that the older TVs tend to lag or not get updated with new features so a cheap streaming stick can be a good fix for that. I’m also very picky about how I can watch on game consoles, and really look for apps that have been made specifically for that console. Before I use any of these to watch, I make sure to check the connection speed. I also love that I can start watching on my phone and then switch to my TV without having to start the video over again. Roku, game consoles – availability and support is all over the place and depends on the region and the store of the device. I’d always check the store of the device first. And I’d always test out the internet bandwidth to ensure it can support higher resolution streams – 5 Mbps for HD quality and 25 Mbps for good quality 4K streams.

To be able to solve problems in a step by step manner when things go wrong is very satisfying. For desi net on phones/tablets and most smart TV’s the application is listed in the devices app store. For Android TV and Fire TV stick the application can be downloaded and installed from the store, for Apple TV it is tvOS app. Opening the desi net site in a modern browser on a laptop and logging in will also allow you to watch. Non-listing of desi net application in your TV’s app store does not mean that it is not possible to watch desi net on your TV, you can always cast the application from your phone using Chromecast or AirPlay or connect a laptop to your TV’s HDMI port.

If there’s some amount of stuttering, I update the app and the device itself to latest firmware. Then I clear the app’s cache and see if that helps. If not, I switch to streaming via wired Ethernet connection (as opposed to Wi-Fi) and try lowering the quality to see if it’s a bandwidth issue. I’ve found out that some plans have a limit on the number of devices that can be streaming at the same time, so I check on that too. Doing all of this a few times has led to me having a smooth setup for the most part.

But if watching Desi on your living room screen is your goal then Android TV, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV and the like all have optimum designed interfaces to make the most of your screen size.

It also works perfectly on a computer via up-to-date versions of browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari. While many newer smart TVs and set-top boxes have a decent app, there are many legacy TV’s and cost-effective media players that lack support. A small streaming media player can be an affordable solution. In my experience keeping the app and set-top box firmware up to date along with performing an occasional router reboot can solve the majority of issues and clear buffering in a flash.

Are you trying to get desi net on all screens in the house? Like me, you’ll find that while support for many devices is very good, there are a few limits to the setup.

On my mobile devices, I have downloaded the app for my phone and tablet (Android and iOS) to create a profile, download content for offline viewing and add subtitles. On my bigger screens such as my Android TV and Fire TV I simply stream content. The streaming is usually in 1080p but can go up to 4K depending on the app and the user’s subscription tier. My mobile devices can also Cast or AirPlay to my Chromecast or Apple TV for viewing on the big screen. For my laptops and desktops, desi content works within modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari). As with other DRM-protected content, it’s best to keep your browser up to date.

For Smart TV platforms such as Tizen powered Samsung TVs and webOS powered LG TVs, there are native apps available. However, availability may vary based on region and Smart TV model. Also, Roku and a few gaming consoles have official apps or may have an unofficial one available in the device’s store. So, it’s best to check the store for desired device first. All in all, you can stream desi content on phone/tablet, Android TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, modern smart TVs and most modern browsers with DRM enabled. Using the web browser to watch stream films is another option. It’s simple and for me works best on my Windows laptop connected to the TV via HDMI. As I mentioned earlier, all films are available on the website, and there’s no problem with apps not being available. On the free streaming option, I can also add ad-blockers to the site, should I wish to. It’s also really easy to use playback shortcuts on the keyboard, rather than having to get up and change channels with the TV remote. For computer savy individuals, the browser version is the most stable and has the full range of features.

I have never had any issues with my Google Pixel and Chromecast with Google TV. All of the integration points work seamlessly. For example, you can search for titles on Desi net with voice search from your remote control. So ‘Hey Google, find some romantic comedies on Desi net’ actually works. The place where I’ve installed Desi net is our vacation cabin. I thought, given the very basic LED TV, and first generation Amazon Fire Stick, that I’d encounter many problems. In reality, while the menus are a bit slow to open, playback is perfectly fine. Thus, another often abandoned piece of kit is good for more than the scrap heap – provided you have an older streaming stick knocking about in a drawer, it’s likely to work just fine.

My mom uses her old Kindle Fire 7 (2019) to run the app, and it is slowly working through its to-do list. However, it is noticeably slower than it would be on more recent hardware. While I wouldn't recommend using ancient hardware to run the app, devices with older OS versions may still install the app and run it. However, be aware that such older OS versions are often unstable, can be prone to app crashes, and you will likely be missing out on a lot of features. Upgrading your cheap streaming stick or older tablet can be well worth it.

I have mixed results with this app. On my high-end Samsung phone, it works beautifully. However, on my older LG smart TV from 2018, the app exists but is extremely slow to use. It does finally play the content you want, but getting there is slow. So while the app is supported on my TV, the experience is not good. If you have an older smart TV and that’s your primary device, you may find better results using a newer streaming device such as a streaming stick or box. These typically have much better app support than smart TVs.
