Can I Edit A Book After It'S Published On Amazon?

Publishing a novel online left me with a few typos in the final version. How difficult is updating a KDP title once it's live, and does it affect reader reviews?

You can edit a currently-sold Amazon KDP ebook. To do so, upload a revised manuscript file for the book (as well as revised versions of the book’s description and cover). The revised ebook should appear within 72 hours of the new file being uploaded. Major revisions, however, will be a puzzle to readers of your previously-published work, and so may not be suitable for books about revision and new beginnings. I just finished reading The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning, a romantic novel in which the main character is given the chance to revise the biggest mistake of her life. The idea of a second draft is thus given a deeply moving and very personal spin.

Yes, editing after publication is possible. After a manuscript has been published by Amazon through KDP, the author can go back into the KDP dashboard and upload new revised versions of the manuscript. Typically within 72 hours or so, the new changes will reflect on the book’s store page.

One thing to note is that big changes to your book may cause problems with your current Kindle Unlimited enrollment. Also, while readers who’ve purchased your ebook can opt to receive updated versions of your book, you cannot force current copies of your book to be updated. This is why minor fixes to typos and such are easy to do, but big changes to your book could confuse readers who left reviews of the original version of your book. To avoid this all together, it’s best to get your book beta read and proofread before publishing it, and make any minor fixes necessary after the fact.

As someone who frequently buys books on Amazon and has recently been exploring the world of publishing, I can confirm that authors do in fact update their books. From my experience with Kindle books, I have seen on numerous occasions that after downloading a book, I will receive a notification advising that there is an ‘updated version available’. This is very similar to how apps are updated. However, an author is unable to update a book on devices where the book is currently offline. Recently, I contacted an author of one of my books regarding a typing error, and he had fixed it by the end of the following day. It’s also worth noting that if you have purchased the Kindle edition of a book, you are normally able to download the updated version for free. However, updated print editions only apply to new copies of the book, and only those copies ordered after the author has made the changes, and you can check when a book was last updated by looking for the ‘last updated’ date on the product page. In short, I always check the ‘last updated’ date now before buying a print book.

I’ve assisted several authors with the process of editing a published book on Amazon. As it turns out, yes, you can edit a book after it has been published, but there are several limits. Cover, title and author name changes are all able to be made easily. ISBN number changes, however, require that you first unpublish your book and then republish it with the new number. To change the interior of a book, you simply upload the new manuscript file. The one catch with this is that printed books (paperbacks/hardcovers) require a new proof copy to be approved before the changes will go live. E-books, however, update in a matter of days at most. Note, however, that existing customers will not automatically receive the updated version of your book – they must download it again manually. To keep track of the changes you have made to your book, it is recommended that you keep a changelog for your book. The reason for this is that Amazon does not keep versions of your file.

Amazon allows authors to update their book(s) at any time. You upload new versions of the book file(s) and Amazon updates them within a few days. Updates do not affect book reviews or rankings. For eBooks, updated editions automatically become available to previous buyers when they re-download the book. (As with new paperback versions, authors order new proof copies before new hardcover versions appear on the site. The process is pretty straightforward and I have updated both editions on many occasions.)

How to edit metadata after you upload books on Kindle?

10 Answers2025-08-10
The 'Publisher' metadata field is often ignored, but can contain useful information for indie authors or web novel followers - I fill this in with 'RoyalRoad' or the Patreon name of the author for books that I have read online. This metadata does not transfer to the Kindle, but it is very useful for tracking books in your master library, and additional metadata fields such as 'Date Read', 'Rating' and 'Source' can be added to Calibre's views to aid in this. For tracking whether a book was read in EPUB format, as a scraped web novel or as an audiobook, I add a 'Format' column to the views. This metadata is stored in Calibre and is a very powerful database of all your reading for life.

What editions of Wuthering Heights are sold on Amazon?

3 Answers2025-07-21
I have many editions of classical novels, and Wuthering Heights is one of my favorites to collect. Amazon offers the Wuthering Heights (Modern Library Classics) which is a minimalist design, the Wuthering Heights (Folio Society) which is a gorgeous edition complete with commissioned illustrations and printed on high quality paper, the Wuthering Heights (Everyman’s Library) which is a sturdy edition with timeless designs, and even some of the original 19th century editions which can be pricey but are wonderful historic editions. As a fan of Audible, the story ‘Wuthering Heights’ can be listened to through multiple narrated versions, including that of renowned British actress Patricia Routledge. A Kindle version is also available for fans of the e-book. Every edition of Wuthering Heights has its own unique characteristics whether it be to the physical book, extra material within or even how one reads the novel. It is wonderful to see how one classic story can be re-launched to cater to different readers.

Can Amazon remove books from my Kindle library?

10 Answers2025-08-16
This is why subscription services like Kindle Unlimited are a better fit for me than buying individual eBooks. I’m renting access to a rotating catalog of work, no misperception of ownership here. If the book in question ever leaves KU I lose it from my library – that was always the explicit agreement on my end for signing up for the service. Contrast with books that I wish to own in physical form. KU for discovery of new works, physical copies for my keepsakes – the two models of distribution serve different purposes for me and I’m extremely content with how things are currently setup.

Best tools to create ebook for Amazon Kindle publishing?

7 Answers2025-07-29
I can only imagine that for most novels, the difference between a tool like Vellum and a very well-prepared Word document that has been converted using Kindle Create to AZW/KF8 is quite negligible. Most readers don’t care about the color gradient of the chapter number and related subheadings in the margin. They care about consistent left margin for indented paragraphs, no blank pages in between, a correctly functioning table of contents and such. All of that can be achieved with free tools. The high-end tools only bring their user tremendous amounts of time and possibly some eye candy that signals professionalism on a subconscious level. But as far as I can tell, the experience of the reader does not change in any fundamental way. If you’re on a very tight budget then don’t feel that you need to purchase expensive software to be ‘legitimate’ writers. Learn the basic manuscript setup and use correctly heading to ensure that your manuscript is easy for others to read. Test, test and test again. A great story published in poor quality Vellum files will get poor reviews. A great story published in a simple Word document will get great reviews. Invest in a quality cover and get your manuscript edited first. The fancy formatting is the last 5% of polishing up.

How do I fix formatting errors after uploading books to Kindle?

5 Answers2025-07-11
The majority of formatting problems that arise with eBooks arise from conflicts between an eBook’s CSS styles and the eBook reader’s default styles. Open your EPUB in an editor (such as the built-in editor in Calibre), open the eBook’s CSS file and simplify it by removing all declarations with ‘!important’ from them. Set the body margin to zero. Define a solid font-family stack. Make sure all your measurements are set up in ‘em’ or ‘%’ rather than fixed ‘px’. Because a Kindle book is read off of screens of varying sizes, using relative units to measure rather than fixed pixels is key to fix formatting issues such as having every other paragraph centered for no apparent reason as I encountered in my last upload.

Are there any books like Y: The Last Man - The Deluxe Edition Book Three?

10 Answers2026-01-22
Actually, Y’s ending is far better than I expected. It’s a beautifully bittersweet ending to a rather amazing comic. If you want to read other comic books with brilliant recontextualising endings which also leave you gasping at how emotional they are, The Sixth Gun by Cullen Bunn is an excellent supernatural western, with a deep and complex story and ending which was superb. The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa is another excellent comic that ends in a really profound and moving discussion of family and legacy – really unexpected but somehow great. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is another very powerful story about finding humanity in very inhumane situations. A girl growing up in Nazi Germany becomes human to the narrator, Death, in a very powerful and life affirming way. The novel’s end is very, very sad but in a good way and I think it makes the novel as a whole very powerful. Finding such great payoffs in comics is rare and when you do, you have to appreciate them.

How to transfer books between Amazon Kindle accounts?

12 Answers2025-08-13
As someone who always looks at things from an accessibility perspective, my concern is that someone who is vision impaired and reads Amazon-exclusive titles on their Kindle with the specific fonts they prefer could be prohibited from having access to that content because it is tied to a family member’s email account. While the Household feature is a good first step, the process of adding others to a Household is unclear and can be confusing for non-tech-savvy individuals. Amazon should develop an easier, more disability-friendly way to grant access to content to caregivers and dependents in those situations. As it stands now, the all-or-nothing Household model does not appear to have been designed with these types of scenarios in mind. It is designed for and works best for the typical, tech-savvy, two-adult Household. Real life is messier than that.

Is Grammarly good enough to edit a book manuscript?

8 Answers2025-07-28
ProWritingAid may also be worth a look for fiction writers. While it isn’t necessarily better than Grammarly, its style, sticky sentence, and pacing reports are more relevant to long-form fiction writing than Grammarly’s reports. As with Grammarly, it’s best to read ProWritingAid reports with both the free version and paid subscription to see which reports and suggestions are most relevant to you, and which interface is more user-friendly.

How to fix common Kindle book formatting errors?

9 Answers2025-08-13
Ugh, indentation chaos. Some paragraphs are displaying huge tabs, while others appear to have no indentation at all. In some cases, the spaces between words are rendering as little square boxes instead of normal space characters. This sort of problem is a sign that your document was created using a bunch of random space and tab characters as opposed to CSS styles for paragraph indentation. For the reader, it can be a problem to work around, but in most cases toggling the “Publisher Font” on and off will reset the paragraph to its proper formatting. Also, if you change the font size up or down by one notch, the text will reflow to proper indentation in most cases. But, oh, the page will look awful in the meantime. This kind of problem is a sure sign that the author did not hire a professional to format the work, and makes me worry about the quality of the editing as well.

Do you have to pay for books on Kindle if you have Amazon Prime?

8 Answers2025-07-10
It’s all really confusing – Prime, Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, Prime Reading – lots of things to choose from and I just get confused. I don’t really know what the difference is, but when I search for a book I click on it and it tells me whether I can read it for free as part of Prime or not. If it doesn’t say ‘Read for Free with Prime’ or something along those lines then I know I’ll have to pay for it to read it. But I don’t know the limits of Prime and what’s included and what’s not – I just search for what I want to read and it tells me whether it’s free or not.
