I browsed around Amazon for Wuthering Heights, and noticed that there were a lot of versions. First there was the Penguin Clothbound Classics edition – it looked very nice, so it would probably be suitable for book lovers with a lot of money to spend. Then there was the Norton Critical Edition, which I thought would be good for students. The Broadview Press edition was also a very scholarly edition, which included a lot of footnotes and also lots of background information to the novel. The Dover Thrift Editions version was also very good, and it was very affordable too.

For younger readers, the novel has been reissued in HarperCollins Children's Classics editions, while the classic Signature Classics edition features new and original cover designs and includes an original biography of Emily Brontë. It is clear that this one classic novel can be presented in so many forms and that Amazon’s choice is further evidence that it is the ideal novel for not only casual readers but also book clubbers and academic students as well as book collectors.

I have many editions of classical novels, and Wuthering Heights is one of my favorites to collect. Amazon offers the Wuthering Heights (Modern Library Classics) which is a minimalist design, the Wuthering Heights (Folio Society) which is a gorgeous edition complete with commissioned illustrations and printed on high quality paper, the Wuthering Heights (Everyman’s Library) which is a sturdy edition with timeless designs, and even some of the original 19th century editions which can be pricey but are wonderful historic editions.

As a fan of Audible, the story ‘Wuthering Heights’ can be listened to through multiple narrated versions, including that of renowned British actress Patricia Routledge. A Kindle version is also available for fans of the e-book. Every edition of Wuthering Heights has its own unique characteristics whether it be to the physical book, extra material within or even how one reads the novel. It is wonderful to see how one classic story can be re-launched to cater to different readers.

When I was looking for a copy of 'Wuthering Heights' on Amazon there were masses of different editions to choose from. Many of the most common are by Penguin, Penguin Classics with a very attractive cover and lots of footnotes, and Oxford University Press, Oxford World's Classics with a very detailed introduction. There's also the Illustrated Classics version which has lots of images and would be perfect for people who like to be able to visualize what is going on. Then there's the Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classics version which is for people who like to collect books. It has gold-edged pages and is a beautiful item. Each edition has its own unique selling point so you need to decide what it is you're looking for in a book.

One can even read a very poorly scanned PDF of a Wuthering Heights edition and still get the full impact of the novel. Edition notes and variants are the obsession of gatekeepers who want to make classic literature a club that they can be part of. Read the book in whatever format you can get your hands on. The story of Heathcliff’s revenge and Catherine’s ‘I am Heathcliff’ declaration is far greater than the sum of any paper it is printed on and any typographical errors that may exist in that print. For someone who is just reading the book for the first time, I would recommend the Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition. It has an excellent introduction and notes to the book, but does not overwhelm. It has beautiful deckle-edge paper and a very flexible, yet comfortable, cover. The typography is clear and easy to read. Many cheaper mass-market editions are printed with tiny text that will soon fall apart under the weight of the book's pages. For someone who appreciates form as well as content, the Folio Society edition is, of course, stunning. But it is not in the budget of most dedicated readers. The best compromise of quality, durability, helpful supplementary material and a good reading experience is the Penguin Deluxe Edition. It is also very widely distributed. You should be able to find it in any number of bookstores. This is also widely available, so you are unlikely to have to search for it.
