Why Do Fans Ship Orihime X Uryu In Bleach?

Her ‘offensive’ move is Koten Zanshun, or more accurately a running gag. Tsubaki runs at Orihime, shouts out the name of his attack and then gets knocked/blocked/ignored by her. I’ve actually lost count of the number of opponents Tsubaki has fought in the story and how many he’s actually defeated. His defeat is usually a setup for a moment where Orihime stands her ground and guards another character. Her growth into a more assertive person is also shown to lead to defensive upgrades such as Ichi no Tate, or the Single Gate which is basically a shield. It’s again a purposeful message to the story that Orihime’s value to the plot isn’t as a fighter. In a battle manga this is a pretty bold choice for a main female character and at times it doesn’t work and makes her seem really passive. However, when it does work it’s great because it shows off the domain of the wall not the sword.

I’ve always seen that as one of the first examples of the series’ themes of defying unjust laws to do what’s right. The first scene with Rukia shows her to be a very by-the-book kind of officer. But in that scene she’s shown to be stronger than her training as a Soul Reaper. She doesn’t give her powers to Ichigo for strategic reasons, she does it because in her heart she’s a protector first and a Soul Reaper second. Her actions later echo in the story of Byakuya, who follows the laws in order to keep alive his sister. Rukia’s actions create an initial crack in that rigid system of the Spirit World’s bureaucracy. And it is because of her actions as a humane Soul Reaper that a human with powers of a Reaper is able to challenge that system in the end.

Also worth noting is the theme of revenge here. Komamura has been seeking vengeance against the Quincy for his master’s death. In Bambietta, he has found the perfect enemy to channel his anger and seek his revenge upon. Her defeat is a cathartic experience for the攝檢 major and serves to be a very satisfying story point for his character development. Her death is satisfying to readers as well as it serves to bring closure to Komamura’s story arc. We have seen Komamura struggle with his anger and his 能力 as a beast, but here he is able to utilize them both perfectly in a single counter-attack. Bambietta was the random, senseless enemy of the Quincy that invaded and took the one thing he loved. His cutting down of her is his declaration of war against the Quincy.

Yoruichi's transformation from her cat form back into a human is one of those iconic 'Bleach' moments that fans love to revisit. She first reveals her human form in Episode 15 of the anime, during the Soul Society arc, when she rescues Ichigo and his friends from Byakuya Kuchiki. The scene is a total game-changer—up until that point, we’ve only known her as this sassy, mysterious black cat who’s clearly more than she seems. But when she finally sheds the feline disguise, it’s pure hype. Her effortless combat skills, that sleek black outfit, and the way she immediately takes charge of the situation? Chef’s kiss. What makes this reveal even better is the context. Byakuya’s about to deliver a finishing blow to Ichigo, and suddenly Yoruichi just drops in like, 'Nope, not today.' The way she casually catches his sword with her bare hand is still one of the coolest entrances in the series. And let’s not forget the aftermath—her dynamic with Ichigo shifts instantly, from playful teasing to serious mentorship. It’s a pivotal moment that sets the stage for so much of her character’s depth later on, especially when we learn about her past as the former captain of the 2nd Division. Every time I rewatch that scene, I catch something new, whether it’s the animation details or the subtle hints about her relationship with Urahara. Just classic 'Bleach' at its finest.

I like episode 118 because, even though it isn’t a full fight scene, it shows how Ichigo stops Rukia’s execution by momentarily freezing time using his spiritual pressure. He doesn’t even pull out his sword for this one. He simply walks into the area and the whole of Seireitei comes to a standstill. That is more impressive than all of his subsequent fiery displays because it shows such raw power. It’s the embodiment of pure authority. It further illustrates that in this world, pure spiritual power trumps ceremony and law. You learn everything you need to know about the current Commander-General from that scene.

There are a few ways that Usopp and Perona are treated in Usopp/Perona fanwork. Also, I have found a lot of ‘comfort’ or ‘healing’ stories. The stories follow both of them as they come to terms with the loss they have had to deal with, in Usopp’s case his self-doubt as a fighter and in Perona’s case, the abandonment by Moria. The majority of the comfort stories depict both of them slowly realizing the other person’s vulnerability, leading to intimate conversations where they can drop their personas. It is a really sweet read as it’s not so much a romance, but more of two people who can finally be themselves around the other person. Perona’s ghost powers or Usopp’s workshop are typically used as a background for their intimate moments together. In addition to the single- Unovapaired story, the Usopp/Perona pairing is also often written in crossover or alternate universe settings – with examples ranging from paranormal investigators to real ghosts, to rival artists in an alternate version of the One Piece universe, with Usopp possibly being a sculptor or inventor, and Perona a gothic fashion designer or blogger. The core of their pairing is the contrast between their two visual styles and personalities, and fans love to mix and match these in all sorts of different scenarios – from forced proximity to post-canon! The pairing is also frequently written with an emotional focus, and can have a deep and affecting side to the fun that is the pairing of exaggerated bravado with gothic whimsy. A great deal of fun can be had with the two characters, and their writer’s have certainly had fun, often managing to balance the dramatic pouts of the ghost princess with the frantic gestures of the cowardly liar.

I recently read ‘The Death Save the Strawberry’. There’s some really niche manga forums and discord servers for fans of the series and people often share links to Google Drive folders containing translations of the novels, which contain a load of information from Kubo’s notes that weren’t included in the series, such as what Ichigo does in the years after the war. It’s really satisfying reading.

All the deep emotions people are discussing are all well and good, but the AUs are really where the fun is at. Right now I’m really enjoying the modern no-curses, coffee shop AU where Megumi is a tired barista and Yuji is a very cheerful customer who orders bizarrely complicated drinks. I’ve also been enjoying a couple of fantasy AUs where their roles are reversed. The core dynamic of sunshine vs. shadow, of optimistic vs. pragmatic works so well in pretty much any setting, so I can follow this ship in lots of different contexts. After a long, grueling chapter of canon I can easily binge-read ten such AUs in a row and just enjoy the happy, argumentative Megumi and Yuji doing laundry or whatever.

This is Ichigo at his absolute best. He has put his whole training into Mugetsu – every moment with Isshin, the ridiculous risk he’s taken to use it. The transformation scene is great as always. Who wouldn’t want to see Ichigo, his white hair wild, a tattered black cloak around his shoulders, burning with a grim look in his eyes. His attack, simple as a slash, carries a weight far greater than any Bankai. The agonizing scene that follows is also intense, however. Here we have a man of unyielding strength, and he’s been rendered powerless. We can see that he’s lost. It’s this duality that makes ‘Bleach’ so very special.

The Thousand-Year Blood War anime is being made with love by the staff and fans of the manga. This means that the natural pace of the story will be maintained instead of trying to cram in 10+ fights into 3 chapters. In addition, the anime will contain more time for character development and drama, unlike the manga where the end was rushed due to Shonen Jump’s deadline. It looks great with smooth fights, such as Byakuya vs. Äs Nödt (Chef’s kiss). Of course, we have to acknowledge the stark black-and-white style of the manga, which possesses a raw intensity of its own. The anime brings up the degree of horror, particularly in the ‘Almighty’ eyes of Yhwach. How are they going to deal with the twists of the final arc?
