I actually prefer the Jennifer Woodward narration. Hear me out. Stevenson's is a classic, but Woodward's pacing feels more contemporary and accessible. Her take on the protagonist's internal monologue is less overtly sarcastic and more genuinely horrified, which I think fits the grotesque fairy tale elements better. It's on Audible and Google Play Books. Give the samples of both a listen; it really comes down to personal taste in performance style.
I've gone down this rabbit hole myself. The version narrated by Juliet Stevenson is, in my opinion, the definitive audio experience. She captures the satirical tone perfectly, and her vocal shifts between the characters are subtle but brilliant. You can find it on Audible and Apple Books as part of their catalog.
That said, 'best' really depends on what you're after. If you want a more recent recording, there's one narrated by Jennifer Woodward. It's perfectly fine, but it didn't have the same biting, weary cynicism for me that Stevenson mastered. I'd steer clear of some of the older library CD rips floating around on YouTube—the audio quality is pretty rough.
Honestly, I'd start with a sample of the Stevenson one. That delivery of the opening line about the butcher's shop just sold me immediately.
Looking for a free option? Check if your local library uses Libby or Hoopla. I borrowed the Juliet Stevenson recording that way last year. The audio quality was excellent. It's hit or miss depending on your library's collection, but it's worth a search before spending money. Some of the uploads on internet archive sites are incomplete or have weird skips, so I'd avoid those.
For a physical CD set, the Naxos AudioBooks release with Stevenson is the one. It's out of print, but you can sometimes find used copies on eBay or independent bookseller sites. The production quality is top-notch, with proper chapter markers and liner notes.

I found myself hunting for the 'Pig's Tales' audiobook after finishing a different Darren Shan book and wanting more of that weird, visceral horror he does so well. The search was surprisingly tricky. Most major platforms like Audible had zilch. I eventually stumbled across it on a site called LibriVox, which hosts free public domain audiobooks read by volunteers. The narration there can be hit or miss, but the version I found had a reader who really leaned into the grotesque, gory descriptions, which kinda fit the material. It's not a polished studio production, but for a free option of a harder-to-find title, it got the job done.
Honestly, I'm not even 100% sure it's the full 'Pig's Tales' novel or a collection of his short stories with a similar name. The metadata on those free sites is sometimes a bit messy. Still, if you're a completist or just curious, LibriVox is worth a shot. I listened to it while doing yard work, and let me tell you, hearing about that stuff while pulling weeds adds a whole other layer of unsettling.
Been searching for that one myself! It's been popping up everywhere in online book circles lately. From what I've pieced together, the full title audiobook isn't on the major subscription services like Audible or Scribd, which is a bit of a pain. I think the author or publisher might have it on a direct-sale model through their own website or a platform like Authors Direct. You'll probably have to buy the file outright rather than stream it with a membership.
I checked a couple of the big retailers, and only the ebook seems widely available. A friend mentioned grabbing the audio from Google Play Books, but I couldn't find it there in my region. Might be worth checking Kobo Audiobooks too – they sometimes have titles the others don't. It's one of those books that feels like it's right on the edge of breaking bigger, so hopefully distribution gets sorted soon.
