Is Ingoshima Raw Manga Finished Or Ongoing?

Can’t find a clear answer online, everyone’s saying something different. Is the dark fantasy manga Ingoshima complete yet, or does it have new chapters still releasing?

It’s been ages since I started reading ‘Ingoshima’. Raw updates erratically as Inu finishes up an arc and then goes off for ages. I binge read the whole lot a couple of years ago during some rainy days and it was fantastic for a number of reasons not least the survival aspects and the atmosphere of the deserted island. Wild plot twists abound so expect for a slow-burning plot it’ll keep you on tenterhooks.

From what I can gather from various forums and conversations around the web, there has been no official word from Inu on when the series will come to a close. Until then, the raws will continue to be released, full of suspense, unanswered questions about the fates of certain characters, and the mystery of the island. The fun of the story is certainly half the fun of discussing the theories with fellow fans, wondering where the story will go next.

So far, so good! Manga like ‘Ingoshima’ are rare because they manage to combine horror so well with character development. It’s only a matter of time before the raws blow something amazing like that betrayal in chapter 120 of ‘Ingoshima’ out of proportion, after which it will go back to calm again for a while. In the meantime, I follow a few Japanese blogs that monitor releases. They seem to agree that Inu-sensei is more of a quality over quantity kind of guy. Alas, that makes the wait even more agonizing. If you’re okay with cliffhangers, though, you should definitely read this – the fans are always abuzz with new theories between updates.

I read a lot of horror/thriller manga and ‘Ingoshima’ is one of my favorites. It’s very raw and has a very unpredictable plot. The raws are still being released but the frequency is not constant. Sometimes there are many chapters released in a short period of time and other times there is silence for months. I also really like how the art has progressed and how the backgrounds get a lot more detailed as the story goes on. It’s a great survival/horror story with a lot of psychological aspects to it.

All the Japanese volumes are out and scanned, but apparently they are ahead of the scanlations. I like the story very much, because it develops in great depth and it really shows how humans react in extreme situations. But I’d like to read it faster!

It’s not complete. The confusion comes when a group drops a series, and readers assume that it’s been completed and is no longer read by English speakers. In fact, the original work is still ongoing. Many lesser-known series are very complicated to follow, often due to poor translation, and text-heavy, which makes them less desirable to fan-translators. Ingoshima, for example, becomes extremely text-heavy from a certain point onwards. But the Japanese original is still ongoing, with new chapters to the complex story added all the time.

As far as I know, it is still an ongoing series. The Japanese bookstores like Honto or Kinokuniya often list new volumes as they are published. The fact that new volumes are published regularly is enough to consider the series active. The most recent volume was listed a few months ago. On the series page of the bookseller’s website there is no ‘完’ (complete) marker yet. As for English speaking readers: the story as it is available to them is not complete yet. The series is still ongoing in Japan, with no official English translation available to bridge the gap for now.

It’s an ongoing series, and I think the length and complexity of it is why no official English publisher has taken it on. The later volumes are quite dense and deeply into the author’s own particular world of lore, so it would be quite a hard sell to new readers. And thus we’re stuck, with the Japanese series continually extending, whilst the English translated portions remain a fragmentary and incomplete series. But, it’s a unique and flawed thing, a ‘singular’ work in the fullest sense of the word: Its sheer, almost-offending scale and audacity is a wonder to behold.

Yes, it is ongoing. Right now, though, there’s a huge backlog of raw chapters, and the amount of fan-translated content only covers a tiny portion of the entire story. As a result, it would take quite some time to read through and catch up, either by learning Japanese and reading the raws yourself, following summaries written by the community for the translated chapters, or waiting for the scanlators to scan chapter by chapter. It’s a pretty massive undertaking just to follow along, but the series is itself a pretty interesting time capsule of the author’s changing tone from purely grim to a sprawling, operatic conflict.

It’s currently being fansubbed, but in a hilarious and albeit somewhat sad way. Right now, there are several groups fansubbing the series, but each group only manages to complete a few chapters before becoming overwhelmed by the text and complexity of the series. At that point, they abandon it, only for another group to pick it up years later. As a result, the English fansub of this series is a hot mess of very different translation styles all cobbled together with huge gaps in between. The Japanese fansubs, meanwhile, continue without a care in the world, oblivious to their English counterparts. The series is likely too niche for a consistent and long-term fansub, but is popular enough in Japan to continue being published.
