Opened my Kindle Paperwhite but can't see the new downloads. Where's the 'My Library' section hiding now after the latest Kindle update?

To locate your library, tap ‘Library’ at the bottom left corner of your device’s home screen. Often when I look for new releases within the KU catalog, I search by the author’s name. For example, I just downloaded the new paranormal romance, My Alpha (Book One). The book instantly appeared in my library. The first book centers around the protagonist trying to hide his true nature from an already suspicous pack of outsiders.

I downloaded way too many books for my own good, so I figured I’d share how one can navigate their Kindle library. From the home screen, tap Library in the bottom menu. From here you can see all of your books. If you wish to see only your downloaded books, tap the filter option in the top right corner of your screen. It’s a dropdown or three dots, and from here you can select “Downloaded.” Note that on older Kindle models you may first have to press Home, then Library.

If a book is downloaded but doesn’t seem to show up, you might have to look in ‘Archived Items’. While I was organizing my books into Collections for ‘Fantasy Escapes’ and ‘Tearjerkers’ and the like, I noted that sometimes sideloaded books seem to disappear. You can look for these in the ‘Settings’/‘Device’/‘Advanced Options’/‘Storage Management’ area. And if all else fails, a restart of the unit seems to bring back the ‘lost’ titles.

So I downloaded a book to my Kindle yesterday. I had a little problem finding it later. So to find your downloaded books on your Kindle, go to the Home screen. All of your books are listed on that page. If you have a newer Kindle then swipe down from the top of the page to open the toolbar and select “Library” from that list. You can then filter the list by “Downloaded” to only see the books that have been downloaded to your Kindle (as opposed to the ones that are stored in the “Cloud”). Oh, and a way to organize your books if you’re reading a series is to add them to a “Collection”. That’s so much better for us marathon readers.

I just wanted to say that finding my library was a game-changer. On most of the Kindles, the 'Library' tab is on the home screen, so it's front and center. I tend to view my library in 'Downloaded' mode to prevent me from getting distracted by the unread cloud titles, but you can view your library however you want. The Kindle app on my phone views in 'More' at the bottom right of the screen, then 'Downloaded'.

I use the Kindle Collections to make it easy to sort my books by mood and then by genre within that. Occasionally a book seems to vanish from my library and the solution is to sync the device via Settings > Sync My Kindle. If that doesn’t work then a reboot of the device is usually sufficient to solve the problem. The Grid View in the Library is also wonderful for viewing the covers of comics and manga on my Kindle.

Is your Kindle book disappearing into a black hole? I have found that downloaded books do not always appear in your library. To find them, first go into your Library and change the dropdown or filter at the top from ‘All’ to ‘Downloaded’. You should now see a reduced list of books that are on your Kindle. If your newly downloaded book is not visible in this list, change the sort order to ‘Recent’. Your newest book should now appear at the top of the list. If it still is not visible after trying these steps, swipe down from the top of your Kindle home screen to access your quick settings. Tap the icon with two arrows in a circle to sync your Kindle. This can take a few minutes to complete, but should solve the problem. If you sideloaded your book via USB or via email, make sure to check your Docs section as these are stored separately from your regular books. For some unknown reason, Amazon treats purchases from their Kindle Store separately from documents that you upload yourself. Finally, if all else fails, log onto the Amazon website and go to Manage Your Content and Devices. Find the book you are looking for in the list on the right and send it to your Kindle again. This is a bit of a process but I find that one of these steps usually solves the problem.

Books in your Kindle library are all downloaded on your device, even though many are stored in the cloud too. I would recommend making as much use as possible of Kindle Collections (enabling users to organize their books into folders, by genre, author, etc.). Swiping down from the top of the Home screen and using the search bar is one of the ways to search for newly downloaded books before you can organize them into collections. Filtering down to ‘Downloaded’ books from within the library view will also show only these and prevent lots of other cloud stored books from appearing in the list. The list view is also better for displaying lots of titles in a quick list format instead of having to scroll through a cover grid. I have already mentioned long pressing on a book cover to access the option to add to a collection and to remove from device, but this can be really useful in the long run for keeping your collection of books organized. Not perfect but with a few tips you can find almost any book in seconds.

Are you logged into the correct Amazon account on your Kindle? I ran into this problem a few years ago. I downloaded a book on my iPhone using the Kindle app, but for some reason it wasn’t appearing on my Kindle. After some digging, I discovered that the Kindle and iPhone app were linked to different Amazon accounts. Check your account by going to Settings > Your Account on your Kindle. Also, make sure your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi and then manually sync your Kindle by sliding down from the top of the home screen and tapping the ‘Sync’ icon. If you’ve borrowed e-books from your local library through Libby, be aware that borrowed books are often contained in a special ‘Borrowed’ area or listed under ‘Docs’. The interface to library e-books can be somewhat confusing and doesn’t always do a great job of distinguishing between sources of e-books. From your home screen, tap the ‘Library’ icon. Look for a ‘Filters’ option on the right-hand side of the screen. Make sure that option is set to ‘Show on Device’ for the contents listed. If you recently removed books from your device to make room for new ones, it may take a little while for Amazon to update and for the removed books to reappear on your device’s library list. And finally, a simple restart of your Kindle often fixes seemingly minor issues with the device. To restart your Kindle, hold the power button down for 40 seconds or so and then release it when it’s restarted.
