For this reason, I approach issues related to the download of Kindle books systematically. I start off by checking my Amazon account for the respective book. Perhaps the book wasn’t purchased or perhaps the borrowing time for a book from the library has expired. Also, I have experienced cases in which payments didn’t go through. The book is listed in my library and yet it won’t download. So I manually sync my Kindle by sliding down from the top edge of the screen with my finger and then tapping Sync on the screen.

So you’ve tried to download a book but nothing happens. Try going into the Settings menu and clearing the cache in Kindle. By clearing the cache you are releasing storage on your Kindle which may have become full and causing errors with the Kindle not downloading books. I’ve learned a few tricks to troubleshooting download issues on my Kindle. First, I check to see if my Kindle has enough storage for the new book. If it doesn’t, I delete old books (or documents that I no longer need) until I have enough room. I then reset the network connection on my Kindle by toggling airplane mode on and off. Note that this will not perform a full restart on your Kindle.

However, if the book still fails to download, I see if I can download it and transfer it to my Kindle using my computer and the Kindle app and then transfer it via the USB cable to my Kindle. I hope this is a possible workaround for wireless connectivity problems.

Yes, I get the occasional problem with the Kindle refusing to download books and I find that this is usually a problem with the internet connection. This could be to do with the connection being too slow or dropping off whilst trying to download the book, and switching to a different Wi-Fi connection or downloading via your mobile phone’s internet connection usually sorts the problem. Occasionally, I have to restart the Kindle by holding the power button down for 40 seconds and then switching it back on again. Sometimes the book not downloading can be because the file has corrupted during download and has to be removed and then re-downloaded from the cloud. Make sure your Kindle is up to date by going to Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options > Update Your Kindle. If all else fails it is always worth contacting Amazon Support and so far they have been very good at sorting out the problem fairly quickly.

The book you bought could be locked to a specific region. If your account was set up to buy books from say Amazon.com and you download the book in a different region to where you bought it, then sometimes the book will not download due to licensing restrictions. You can check your ‘Country Settings’ within your Amazon account. If you have moved, then you will need to update your ‘Country Settings’ within your Amazon account. Some books are restricted to certain territories and therefore your Kindle will check where you are located via your IP address. Most books aren’t restricted though and affect a small amount of people ie. those who are expats or travelers.

Make sure the book you’re trying to download is allowed in the child’s library. If the book is restricted by age range or category, it may not show up in the child’s library even if you’ve added it to the allowed books for their profile. Try to download the book to your adult profile first and then share the book from your adult profile to the child’s profile. For some reason, the download will fail on the child’s profile trying to verify the permissions, but managing all of this from the Family Library settings for your adult profile is much easier and will work correctly.

Before you go too far, see if shifting the book to another “location” on your device will “fix” it. Press and hold on the book’s cover, select Remove Download, then tap on the cover again to redownload the book. Sometimes these Kindle issues are simply a brief glitch in the device’s data storage and a simple refresh of the book’s files (as if you unplug it and plug it back in) can fix the problem. Interestingly, this seemingly futile act actually fixes the problem about 60% of the time with no apparent change having occurred. For the error message “Not Enough Memory” be sure to delete books from your device as well as check for audiobooks in the “Audible” folder (if your eReader supports them). Those can be rather large files, and you can get a breakdown of what is using up space by going to Settings > Storage Management. Then remove any finished audiobooks. If you have ever transferred personal PDFs or DOC files to your eReader via USB, be aware that these may be taking up hidden space on your device. Connect to a computer and manually delete any unnecessary files from your documents folder.

Disable your VPN on your home network or on your router if you’re using one there. The Amazon servers may not be able to see traffic that comes from known VPN IP addresses because they can’t tell if you’re supposed to buy Kindle content based on where you are geographicly. The Kindle cannot connect to VPNs. So if your whole network is set up to go through a VPN, that can cause problems downloading books. Connect directly, download the book and then turn your VPN back on. It’s a very specific problem but it’s a common problem for people who use whole-network VPNs to stay private on the internet.

Your Kindle will have a hard time accessing the download link for a hotel or airport Wi-Fi with a captive portal (a login screen for the Wi-Fi). Even though you can connect to the Wi-Fi with your Kindle, your Kindle does not have a browser to navigate through the ‘click to agree’ screen for a captive portal. Once you get to an open network, you can download the book, but until then you are stuck. Instead, use your phone as a hotspot to download the book while you are on the go. Follow the steps in this order to go through the troubleshooting systematically: 1) restart your Kindle; 2) Make sure Wi-Fi is on and not in Airplane Mode; 3) Make sure there is enough space on your device; 4) Delete and then re-download single book; 5) Try reading a different book; 6) Deregister and then re-register your Kindle; 7) Update your Kindle’s software manually; 8) Contact Kindle Support.
