Should I Follow Publication Or Chronological Order For Mortal Instruments Books?

After finally starting the Mortal Instruments series, reading the book timeline is confusing. Should I start with City of Bones or The Bane Chronicles first to avoid spoilers?

Pure publication order (the exact date each book was released) would have you jumping between series, because Clare wrote TID between TMI 3 and 4. That's too messy. The sensible compromise is 'series publication order': complete TMI 1-3, complete TID 1-3, complete TMI 4-6, etc. This respects the author's writing blocks and the natural narrative breaks she intended. It's the best of both worlds.

What about the graphic novel adaptations? Do they count? Do I need to read those in a specific order too? This universe is a hydra.

My friend insisted I read chronological, starting with TID. I did. When I mentioned a certain character's last name in TMI, she gasped and said 'Oh, you already know who that is!' That's the problem. You lose all the subtle clues and dramatic irony the author planted for readers discovering the world in publication order. The mystery and slow unveiling of history is a feature, not a bug. I wish I'd experienced it that way first.

As a librarian, I always guide patrons to the publication order for any series unless the author explicitly states otherwise. For Cassandra Clare's works, the publication order of each sub-series is clear. Read 'The Mortal Instruments' 1-6, then you can explore 'The Infernal Devices', 'The Dark Artifices', etc., in their own publication sequences. Mixing series mid-stream interrupts narrative momentum and can lead to spoilers. Authors build upon their own previously published lore, so following their release schedule is the safest bet for coherence.

I love the passion in this thread, but we're all forgetting the simplest answer for a new reader asking about Mortal Instruments: just read 'City of Bones', 'City of Ashes', and 'City of Glass'. That's a complete story. Then decide if you want more of that world. If yes, continue with 'City of Fallen Angels'. You don't need to commit to a 15+ book saga from page one. Take it one trilogy at a time.

Should I follow publication or chronological order for Immortal Instruments

9 回答2026-07-24 23:55:38
My cousin asked me this last week. I told her to just start with 'City of Bones.' If she's hooked after three books, we can have the big order conversation. Most people don't even make it through all 20+ books, so optimizing the entire journey from page one is overkill. Get through the first trilogy. If you're craving more, then look at the expanded reading order charts. Don't paralyze yourself before chapter one.

Should I read Mortal Instruments in publication or story order?

Let’s be real, the writing in 'City of Bones' hasn’t aged perfectly. Starting with the more polished 'Infernal Devices' can set a misleadingly high standard. You might find it harder to engage with the earlier, clunkier TMI prose afterward. Publication order eases you into the author’s developing skills. You grow with the writing. Starting with the best and then going backward can lead to disappointment and dismissal of the foundational books.

How do the Mortal Instruments books connect in chronological order?

3 回答2026-08-03 05:07:02
Be prepared for a lot of 'oh, THAT'S who that is!' moments. That's the primary connection method. A seemingly minor historical figure in one book becomes the ancestor of a main character in another. A last name dropped casually in 'City of Glass' gets a full tragic backstory in 'Chain of Gold'. The chronological order is less important than the 'aha' order. The author is a master of the dramatic reveal that recontextualizes everything you read before. If you read strictly by timeline, you rob yourself of those reveals. The pleasure is in the puzzle pieces snapping together backwards.

How does the Mortal Instruments book order fit into Shadowhunter chronology?

I disagree with the idea that you must read TMI first. I started with 'Clockwork Angel' and was completely captivated. Yes, some terms weren't explained immediately, but you pick them up from context. The romance, the clockwork monsters, the Victorian setting—it was all so immersive. When I later read 'City of Bones', it felt like discovering the future of a world I already loved. Spotting the descendants of my favorite characters was a joy. So TMI's place in the chronology became a destination for me, not a starting point.

What order should I read The Mortal Instruments books?

If you're diving into Cassandra Clare's shadowy, demon-filled world for the first time, I'd absolutely recommend starting with 'City of Bones'—it’s the gateway to the entire Mortal Instruments series. The books follow a pretty intense arc, and jumping in later might leave you scratching your head at the lore. After the original trilogy ('City of Bones,' 'City of Ashes,' 'City of Glass'), you can move into the second set ('City of Fallen Angels,' 'City of Lost Souls,' 'City of Heavenly Fire'). Some fans argue you could pivot to 'The Infernal Devices' prequel trilogy after book three for chronological depth, but honestly? Stick with publication order first—it preserves all the twists. One thing I love about this series is how Clare layers her universe. If you get hooked, there’s 'The Dark Artifices' and other spin-offs waiting, but Mortal Instruments is the heart of it. The characters’ growth feels so organic when read in order, especially Clary and Jace’s messy, heartbreaking dynamic. Pro tip: avoid spoilers like the plague—this series thrives on its reveals.

How does the Mortal Instruments publication order differ from timeline order?

3 回答2026-08-03 01:09:13
I love a good timeline, but for reading? Nah. Stories are told in the order they are for a reason. Flashbacks exist in novels for dramatic effect, not because the author forgot to put them in chronological order. The whole Shadowhunter universe is like one giant, beautifully constructed flashback. You need the present-day story to anchor why the past matters. Starting in the past assumes everything that comes after is the payoff, but TMI is the core emotional engine for many readers.

What is the correct order to read the Mortal Instruments books?

9 回答2026-08-03 18:14:34
If you're coming from the TV show 'Shadowhunters' or the movie 'City of Bones', the book order is still the same. Those adaptations took liberties and condensed plots, so don't assume you know what will happen. Start from book one, 'City of Bones'. The book introduces characters and relationships differently, and the lore is much more detailed. The show, in particular, incorporated elements from later books and other series very early on. So reading in the standard 1-6 order will still feel fresh, even if you know some major plot points. You'll get the fuller, richer version of the story as it was originally written. Consider the adaptations as separate, alternate-universe versions.

What is the correct Mortal Instruments book reading order?

What about the newer series like 'The Last Hours' (starting with 'Chain of Gold')? That's set after 'The Infernal Devices' but before 'The Mortal Instruments'. See, it never ends! If you're going for full chronology, it gets even more complex. My advice to new readers: Stick to the completed series first. Do 'Mortal Instruments', then 'Infernal Devices', then 'Dark Artifices'. Worry about 'The Last Hours' and 'The Wicked Powers' later, once you're sure you're in for the long haul.
