One minor gripe with Libby: if you listen to a book, return it, and then borrow it again months later, it does remember your old progress and asks if you want to resume. That's good! But sometimes I want to start over, and it's a little stubborn about asking. A tiny interface quibble.

I'm surprised more people don't mention the podcast-style apps. Pocket Casts can play audio files and sync position, but you need to load the audiobooks manually, which is a pain. For a curated, legal free library with auto-sync, library apps are still king. No contest.

Has anyone compared the actual audio quality between Libby and Hoopla on the same title? I feel like Hoopla sometimes has a higher bitrate, but it could be my imagination. Regardless, sync works perfectly on both, so it comes down to catalog and personal app preference.

For the privacy-conscious: Libby's privacy policy states they don't sell your personal data or listening history. Your library might have its own policies, but OverDrive seems fairly trustworthy. It's a relief compared to some ad-supported 'free' apps that definitely track you.

I tried using Google Play Books for a free classic. It synced, but the interface for audiobooks is an afterthought. Libby is built from the ground up for this. The difference in user experience is night and day, especially for managing multiple loans and holds.

Which free audiobook app for Android syncs across devices?

This might be a hot take, but the search for the perfect free app is a distraction. Your time has value. If you listen to more than two audiobooks a month, a subscription service like Scribd or Audible Plus is worth it for the sheer convenience and peace of mind. The 'free' path often costs more in time and mental energy.

Apple Books does this seamlessly if you're in the Apple ecosystem. You can add your own audiobook files (like from CDs or other sources) to the Books app on a Mac, and they'll sync via iCloud to your iPhone and iPad, complete with progress. For purchased audiobooks from Apple, it's obviously automatic. It's not cross-platform to Android, but for iPhone+iPad users, it's built-in and free beyond the cost of the hardware.

I wish Goodreads would properly integrate with Kindle or other apps to auto-sync progress. The manual update is a chore. Imagine finishing a chapter on your Kindle and having your Goodreads status auto-update. That's the dream. The technology is obviously there; it's a business deal problem. Until then, our progress exists in separate silos: one for reading, one for social.

Which free Android audiobook player syncs progress across devices?

For those with a Plex Media Server already running: the PlexAmp app! It's primarily for music, but if you add your audiobooks to your Plex music library (organized properly with metadata), PlexAmp can play them. And the killer feature is 'Plex Dash' or now built-in tracking—your play progress syncs across any device running PlexAmp because it's all tracked by the Plex server. You need a Plex Pass for PlexAmp, so it's not free, but if you already have a Plex server and a Plex Pass for other reasons, this is a seamless solution. The interface is gorgeous, and the sonic analysis features are cool bonuses.

What free audiobooks apps sync listening across multiple devices?

I'm a bit skeptical of some of these 'free' apps that require a library card. It's free at the point of use, sure, but it's subsidized. I prefer truly free apps like Loyal Books or the LibriVox app, where the content is public domain and the app is supported by donations or ads. Their sync features are getting better, as mentioned earlier. It's a philosophical preference. I like knowing the authors and narrators of the works I'm listening to were paid at some point (for public domain) and I'm not relying on a system that might be defunded. The sync might be a bit less polished, but it feels more sustainable to me.
