If I were going to compare a golem mage to a necromancer in terms of “magic battles” I would say that they are both very powerful in their own ways, and usually I would say that the Golem mage would be more powerful in most situations, as Golem mages create huge magical hulks that can serve as tanks and be used on almost any terrain, which is a big plus for desert battles. The only downside to golem mages is that they require a lot of magical power to create and control the Golems, but in terms of pure combat, I would say that a Golem mage is more powerful than a necromancer.

Of course, in a fight 1v1 or in a siege situation, Golem Mages would be able to last longer because of their tanky nature. But in a long war, a Necromancer has an infinite army and is able to constantly replenish it. A fortress is very powerful in war, but a wildfire is worse.

Golem mages versus necromancers is quite an interesting match-up. A blacksmith hammers out his creations from raw materials, a puppeteer manipulates existing materials to create something entirely new. I really enjoy how Golem mages can be customized with various elements and even cored with all manner of enchantments. And while necromancy is recycling, it can be a very dark and unpleasant form of magic. Of course, a golem mage does not fall in power should there be no corpses about, nor do they typically frighten the local villagers half to death. A Necromancer, on the other hand, can be basically unbeatable with adequate preparation time. I really enjoyed the series 'Overlord' in which the leader of a group of dead enemies, Ainz Ooal Gown, had reached a level of necromancy that was broken in terms of power. But in a straight-up fight, I would bet on the golem mage’s single, nearly unstoppable juggernaut to take down a horde of undead bones.

From a lore perspective, this battle is so so much better than I imagined. Golem mages typically have a very scientific background of magic (sort of like the alchemists from Fullmetal Alchemist or the artificers from Dungeons & Dragons). Their magic is very, very methodical, requiring a multitude of strange parts and an exact sequence of actions to get the results that they want. On the other hand, Necromancers are typically mad, generally evil rebels or outcasts that use the darkest, most forbidden form of magic out there. Power-wise, I’d say Necromancers have far more potential to destroy things in a battle, especially if we are talking about a lich (an undead wizard) against a golem master. A lich is effectively immortal, while a golem mage is a perfectly normal human being who can die very easily. However, while necromancy has a lot of potential danger and morals to it, a golem mage is typically more reliable in a fight than his opposite number, simply because golems don’t turn on you when you lose control of them (not that I would know or anything). So, the main trade-off between these two types of magic users is between lots of raw power and lots of reliability. In a dark, gothic type of fantasy world, I’d probably choose to be a necromancer at some point or another, but in a purely fictional battle between two “fair” opponents, the golem mage is the more reliable choice.

My fascination with the necromancer class was sparked by the Diablo hero raising skeletons in the first game. While Golem mages have their own unique brand of interest to me – that of crafting a singular and incredibly powerful unit – the pawns that the necromancer controls are his to lose and to remake at will. While it is true that a well crafted Golem mage has a high hit-point total and can ‘tank’ a lot of damage before going down, this is not similar to raising an army of undead skeletal warriors. A Golem mage’s magic is mostly of a brute-force-and-defend nature, while the necromancer has the ability to apply curses to enemies, drain life from them, and even possess their bodies. All in all, I would choose to play as a necromancer because of the sheer cool-factor of marching an army of the undead around on the battle field.
