How Does Hetalia Tackle LGBTQ+ Representation Effectively?

In order to understand the LGBTQ+ representation in ‘Hetalia’, the series must be understood as largely comedic, however accepting of different identities. The characters are all personified as nations of the world, and thus it is easy to interpret the relationships between the various characters. Some examples of these relationships include the playful and indeed sometimes tense friendship between America and England, hinting at unrequited love or even hidden feelings for each other.

Additionally, there are a number of varieties of characters, therefore we are also able to observe the different points of view towards queerness and find out how different nations feel about LGBTQ+ identities in certain moments throughout the show. Seeing some form of representation in series is very important, and in the quirky world of Hetalia, love comes in all shapes and forms, and fans are able to learn about acceptance in this series as well.

The Japanese series “Hetalia” incorporates LGBTQ+ themes by setting each of the countries of the world with a male main character. Therefore, tons of creative situations regarding queer relationships can arise. The fun way that each of the nations and their characteristics bring about comedy means that there are many occasions of flirtatious moments, that are great topics for many ‘what if’ situations between the characters, thus making wonderful topics of very obvious non-straight friendship and romance between the countries’ characters.

This shows how France can celebrate queer identity by being as bold and flamboyant as he is, showing that his kind of character can exist outside of normal tropes for that nation. He could clearly be flirting with England, but that would be a story outside of the actual Hetalia narrative and leave the possibility open for fans and audiences to explore the feeling themselves in whatever way they like.
