Where Can I Legally Download The Best Free Visual Novel Games On PC?

For writers, those tiny free browser VNs are an inspiration. Getting to see how other writers use their space to lay out their story, their characters, their dialogue, and their player’s choices is amazing. It’s like a course on minimalist writing. You see immediately what you can keep in and what you have to cut. I got more ideas from playing three tiny odd browser VNs than I got from a dozen writing how-to guides online. It’s just so cool to see that something as simple as a short free browser-based VN can be made, and that all a good story needs is an idea and the guts to put it out there. Often the semantic imperfections of the presentation itself actually add to the VN’s charm and power, highlighting the core emotional truth of the story in a really beautiful way. They’re raw, uncut, and I love ’em.

Years ago, I contracted a nasty virus while attempting to download Katawa Shoujo from a mirror site. After that ordeal, I made sure to only download free VNs from official websites listed on vndb.org or from a developer’s own itch.io profile. While there are some aggregator sites that host free VNs for download, I never download games that are only available through such sites. With thousands of free and legitimate VNs out there, I figure missing out on one title isn’t worth the risk. In DoL I got fed up with the grind and wanted something more visually pleasing. ‘Karryn’s Prison’ is my new found love. Although it has the core stats, the fighting and corruption mechanics of DoL it is actually a fully formed game with all the animations and a real objective to play for. Unlike DoL where you’re just trying to survive in a town, in Karryn’s Prison you manage a prison. The risk vs reward and system mastery is all there though, and it’s been much more polished visually than I expected.

But unlike the very faithful first season of television, there are large and soon increasing deviations from the original text as the season goes on. To do this sort of comparison, you’d really need to read the whole, unedited text – something that a free sample would not be able to give you past the introductory setup. The free sample is like the pilot episode of a show. If you like the pilot, you can then subscribe to the channel to watch the rest of the episodes. Many visual novels are novels. ‘Muv-Luv Alternative’ is like reading ‘War and Peace’ twice. Even ‘The Fruit of Grisaia’ trilogy consists of three very long games. So, unless you are a very dedicated reader, you have to prepare for a very long time to read all the visual novels you want to. That’s why I prefer kinetic novels (no choices) or shorter novels (even if they are not as good). For example, ‘Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet’ (a 5-hour long kinetic novel that is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a museum robot recounts the events leading up to the apocalypse) and ‘Emily is Away’ (a nostalgic simulation of early 2000s chat clients, with a powerful and concise story) are much better examples of the medium than the typical harem-style game with 100 hours of gameplay. So, if you are new to the medium, I would recommend starting with a shorter, highly-rated game, as your ‘top’ game might be the one you actually finish.

Accessibility features are critical for enabling legitimate retailers’ online stores to function for people with disabilities, whereas ‘free’ download sites fail abysmally. While text-to-speech, varying fonts, invert background color, and being able to bookmark pages correctly are all enabled by default for e-Books sold through Kindle, Kobo and Google Play Books online stores, none of these accessibility features are guaranteed when downloading an EPUB from a personal blog or website. It’s rare to find a series this long and well-written with no paywall—I’ve spent countless hours diving into its world!

Most modern books such as For the Record are not released legally as free books unless the author has chosen to release them as free books. You may occasionally find a fan translation floating about on obscure forums that offer free downloads, but these are generally to be avoided. Instead, consider using your local library through an app. Some books, like ‘For the Record’, are offered for free by the author, but usually not legally. Fans can sometimes find a translation of a book and offer it for download, but often these are found on dodgy forums and you don’t know where the money from the download is going. A better option are library apps which offer budget readers a vast choice of books and are perfectly legal. Occasionally authors will run a giveaway for their book on Goodreads or Twitter, so it’s worth keeping an eye on those. It’s not exactly quick and will mean you’re reading within the law, but it’s worth waiting for.
