Which Legend Companion Books Are Canon And Where In The Order Do They Go?

Reading 'Legend' by Marie Lu and want the full picture. Which expanded universe novels like 'Life Before Legend' are confirmed series lore? Wondering about chronological placement between the main trilogy books for completionists.

The writer's blog posts from during production, which were collected into a slim volume, are the real key. They explain character decisions that the show never verbalizes. That book is the missing puzzle piece. Read it after Season 3.

The cookbook based on regional cuisines from the show is fantastic. Is it canon? If a character eats a stew in Episode 4, and the cookbook has the recipe for that stew, then yes, that recipe is as canon as anything. Enjoy it during a weekend binge.

The chronology is a nightmare because the 'Chronicles' include letters written by a long-dead character. Those letters reference events covered in Season 5. So do you read the letters (in the companion) before seeing Season 5? I'd say no. Watch Season 5, then read Chronicles for the added context.

I disagree with putting the 'Making of' books so high. They break the fourth wall constantly. Knowing how a stunt was done can ruin the magic. For pure in-world canon, stick to novelizations and in-universe guides. Keep the behind-the-scenes stuff separate for later.

The only companion I'd insist is mandatory is 'The Lore of Legends: An Insider's Account'. It's written by the show's historical consultant and clarifies so many confusing timeline points from the early seasons. Read it after Season 2.

How should a new reader approach the Legend book series order?

5 回答2026-07-30 08:49:46
I'm a mood reader, so I could never stick to a strict order. Sometimes I wasn't in the headspace for a heavy, war-focused prequel, so I'd jump ahead to a more adventure-heavy sequel. As long as you have a basic grasp of the major events (which a wiki summary can provide), you can enjoy the books out of order. They're well-written enough to stand on their own in many cases. Don't let perfectionism steal your joy.

Are the companion books canon to the original novel series?

11 回答2026-07-27 20:57:23
I've spent countless hours debating the canonicity of companion books. The answer isn't always straightforward. Take 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard' in the 'Harry Potter' series—it's considered semi-canon because it expands lore but doesn't directly impact the main plot. Similarly, 'The Silmarillion' for 'The Lord of the Rings' is canon but functions more like a mythic backdrop. Some companion books, like 'The World of Ice and Fire' for 'A Song of Ice and Fire,' blend canon with supplementary material, making them essential for hardcore fans but optional for casual readers. Companion books often serve as world-building tools rather than plot continuations. For example, 'The Witcher' series has 'Season of Storms,' which is technically canon but feels more like a side story. Meanwhile, 'The Hunger Games' companion 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' is undeniably canon, as it directly ties into the original trilogy's themes and characters. Ultimately, whether a companion book is canon depends on the author's intent and how tightly it weaves into the main narrative. If you're a completionist, they're worth exploring; otherwise, they might feel like bonus content.

How do I read the Legend book series in order by publication?

6 回答2026-07-30 10:08:10
I'm a mood reader, so sometimes I just grab whatever's available. But for plot-heavy series like this, I make an exception. I forced myself to follow the publication order, and I'm glad I did. The world-building layers so well. You get the dystopian LA in 'Legend', the broader republic in 'Prodigy', and the international stakes in 'Champion'. Each book expands the scope logically. Reading them out of sequence would jumble that expansion.

Where does each novella fit in the Legend book series reading order?

5 回答2026-07-30 09:11:10
My personal rule for any series: always read in publication order. Authors and editors craft the release schedule to control the flow of information and emotional impact. 'Legend' is no exception. Deviating from that is an experiment, not the standard. For your first time, trust the process. Read what was released first, then what was released next. It’s the safest way to experience the story as it was meant to be discovered.

What is the chronological order of the Legend book series timeline?

6 回答2026-07-30 12:57:19
Well, the chronological reading order is actually a pretty wild ride compared to publication order. I'd say start with 'The Elvenbane', then move to 'The Elvenblood', followed by 'The Elvenborn'. After that, you jump into the main 'Dragon Jousters' series: 'Joust', 'Alta', 'Sanctuary', and 'Aerie'. But then things get tricky because the 'Obsidian' trilogy ('The Outstretched Shadow', 'To Light a Candle', 'When Darkness Falls') is set way, way before all that in the same universe. It's basically ancient history. Some people argue you should read 'Obsidian' first for full context, but I liked discovering the ancient lore after knowing the 'present' timeline. It gives those reveals more weight, you know? The magic systems and the state of the world in 'Joust' make more sense once you've seen the Elven-led society in the other books, even though they come later chronologically. Honestly, reading in publication order might be less confusing for a first timer, but if you're a timeline purist, that's the sequence.
