I wonder if the reading experience is different on a phone versus an e-reader. I read on my Kindle Paperwhite using the Libby send-to-Kindle feature, and it's just like reading a purchased book. No eye strain, and the battery lasts forever. Highly recommend that method if you have a Kindle.

Do other countries have similar systems? I know the UK has BorrowBox and Libby as well. Canada uses OverDrive/Libby heavily. The principle is the same globally: public libraries license digital content for their patrons. The specific app might have a different name.

Check out your local public library's digital service, honestly. Most of them partner with Libby or OverDrive, and you can use your library card to borrow ebooks and audiobooks completely free. Nora Roberts has a massive backlist, so availability is usually pretty good, though popular new releases might have a waitlist. It's the most legitimate way to read them online without paying a cent. You just need to sign up for a card if you don't have one.
Sometimes smaller libraries have shorter wait times than big city systems, so that's worth exploring too.

My strategy: I search for 'Roberts, Nora' by author and sort by 'Date Added'. Sometimes libraries acquire backlist titles in chunks, and you can grab them before anyone else notices they're there. Scored a no-wait copy of 'The Reef' that way.

Honestly, the 'free' part is a bit misleading if you don't already have a library card. Apps like Hoopla and Libby are gateways to your local library's digital collection. If your library's budget is small, your selection will be too. It's less about the app and more about your library's partnership.

Sometimes the simplest answer is the best. Go to your library's website. Look for 'eBooks.' Follow the instructions. That's it. All this talk of multiple cards and strategies is for power users. For a new person, just getting started with your local library's app is a huge win.
I find the genre categorization on these apps can be lacking. A Nora Roberts book might be under 'Romance,' 'Suspense,' 'Fiction,' or 'Mystery.' If your initial search feels thin, try browsing those different categories. You might find more.
For book clubs, it's a godsend. Getting 10 people to all buy or find the same physical book is a challenge. But if everyone has a library card, they can all borrow the ebook or audiobook for free simultaneously (depending on copy availability). It levels the economic playing field for the group. I've seen clubs specifically choose Nora Roberts titles because they know the digital access is reliable and free for all members. It encourages more diverse participation. The library becomes the silent, facilitating member of every book club that uses it.
Definitely. It's a fantastic resource. I love that I can sample the narrator before committing. Some of Roberts' books have multiple audio versions, and you can pick the narrator you prefer. The library apps also let you tag titles as 'want to read,' which is handy for keeping track of her huge output. It's a streamlined, professional service that rivals any paid platform.
Let's not forget about used ebook marketplaces? Do those exist? I know you can't resell Kindle books, so that's out. What about other platforms? Is there a legal way to transfer an ebook license to another person? I don't think so, due to DRM. So the secondhand market, which is a huge legal source for physical books, doesn't exist digitally. That's another reason the library is so crucial—it's the only legal way to 'borrow' a digital file. The inability to lend or give away an ebook you've purchased is a downside of the digital format that libraries uniquely solve.
I'll be the downer here and say that truly 'free' in the sense of 'no library card, no account, just a website' isn't going to be legal. Any site offering full, current novels for zero cost and no library affiliation is almost certainly pirating them. Supporting those sites hurts authors. The library digital systems are the way to go; they pay for licenses that actually contribute to author royalties. It's the only ethical free option.
